Chapter 8 Don't Regret It

She opened the door but found no one in the house. Three years had passed, and the place looked much colder than it used to be. As she went from room to room, she noticed that most of her father's valuable collections were gone.

Exhausted, she went to her old bedroom, lay down, and fell asleep.

By the time she woke up, it was almost nightfall. Light from the setting sun streaked through her half-drawn curtains, washing everything inside the room with the color of dusk.

Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she opened the door and walked downstairs. Although she had finally slept well after staying up the previous night, she still felt a slight headache.

"Joan Gu," Scott said in a cold voice. Joan suddenly opened her eyes wide and looked towards the direction of where the voice came from.

On the couch in the living room, a man dressed in a dark grey suit leaned casually. His black eyes were staring at her. It was hard to tell what he was thinking.

Celia Xu, who was sitting next to Scott, looked pleased to be with him. Her eyes were full of lust, although the man didn't seem to be as enthusiastic.

Upon seeing Joan, Scott stood up from the couch and pointed at a document on the tea table. On the paper, the words "divorce agreement" were written in bold letters. With a gloomy expression, Scott asked in a cold tone, "Joan, are you filing for divorce?"

They had not seen each other since Joan left the house the previous day. Scott hadn't taken her threat seriously since he thought that she was just trying to get his attention. To his surprise, a lawyer called him early this morning, telling him that he had been entrusted by Joan to handle their divorce.

The nerve of this woman! Just as she had gotten out of prison, she had cheated on him and then had the audacity to ask for a divorce. He was the young master of a rich and powerful family. How dared this jailed woman talk about separation?

Joan was a little surprised to see the divorce papers. She hadn't expected that the lawyer Linda recommended would act so quickly. She called him up as she made her way to interview Darren. After a quick chat, it seemed as if he had already drawn up the agreement.

"Yes, I want a divorce."

Scott squinted at her, as if trying to figure out if she was telling the truth.

But Joan could tell what was on his mind, and she had no intention of beating around the bush. Their marriage had been a mistake from the very beginning. She said to him, "Sign it now, Scott. You can easily get married again after our divorce. I think you'd like that."

Since he didn't love her, she thought that there was no need to continue getting involved with him. A brief burst of pain is much better than a dull but lasting one. Joan wanted to get it over and done with quick. She had thought about it during her three years in prison. And after seeing Scott again and learning about his affair, she became even more firm in her decision.

Besides, she was still young.

"You will get nothing if you divorce me, Joan," he threatened. When they got married, their combined property were registered in both of their names. It mostly included the furniture in their villa.

When her father passed away, Joan was set to inherit some of his assets. But before she could get them, they had to be sold to cover the bankruptcy of the Gu family's business. They even had to sell several real estates.

If she divorced Scott, she would have nothing.

Joan took a deep breath and said flatly, "I know."

Something flashed in Scott's eyes. He started to look at her from a new perspective. She was thinner than she was three years ago, but her face was still as delicate and beautiful as it was before. She was attractive and made people unconsciously fall for her.

Joan was really beautiful. She could easily be one of the prettiest women in S City. Her temperament and breeding were superior among socialites. For a moment, he had been moved by her perfection. He might have fallen in love with her, if it weren't for...

His eyes dimmed as he snapped back to his senses. Joan had seemed different after she was released from prison. The way she looked at him was not as affectionate as before. Her eyes were indifferent.

He was not used to this feeling.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" Joan picked up the pen and signed the document before handing it to Scott.

Her handwriting was as lovely as ever. He didn't know why but he could only look at her signature on the paper.

"Don't expect to get a penny from me."

Scott took the pen from her. Their fingertips touched for a moment, but he quickly withdrew his hand. Joan felt as if the warmth of their fingertips burned her heart. She had told herself countless of times to not feel bad for such a person, but she still couldn't stop the tears from brimming in her eyes.

Did he think that she was just after his money? From the first day she knew him, she had never thought about his wealth!

Scott raised his head and saw the tears in her eyes. His heart skipped a beat and he stopped writing for a moment.

"Don't regret it."

After signing the paper, Scott assumed his usual indifference. He took two steps out before turning back. After taking a card from his wallet, he threw it on the floor near Joan and said, "Take that. With that, I've made everything up to you. I don't want to hear anyone say that I was a mean husband."

Hearing that, Joan felt her blood boiling. Scott was humiliating her even more.

"What's happening? Why didn't you tell me that you were coming, Mr. Jian? What are you doing here, Joan?" The main door of the house opened and an elegant lady came in. Her long and narrow eyes swept around the two people in the living room, until they eventually fell on the signed divorce papers on the tea table.

"You want to divorce?" she exclaimed.

Joan bent over to pick up the card and blocked Scott's way. She stared at him coldly and said, "Take your money and get out! I don't want to see you for the rest of my life."

It was then when Laura Xu noticed the bank card in Joan's hand. Her eyes lit up with greed. She rushed over to Joan and snatched the card from her, saying, "Scott, you're so wealthy. How can you get rid of Joan with only a card?"
