Chapter 7 Things Had Changed In The Gu Family

It was summertime in August, but the temperature in the big meeting room was as cold as it would be in winter. The stunned Selina stood aside, holding her breath. She stared at Joan as if she were a lunatic who dared resist Mr. Lu.

But the truth was, Joan had just won the game.

Darren turned and said with a cold expression, "Tell Miss Su to go home. Let her know I'm doing an important interview."

Despite having successfully completed her mission, Joan still felt like she was in a dream. Had she known that her technique would work, she would not have wasted time on pleasantries.

All of a sudden, an important thing occurred to her. "Mr. Lu, I think you've read the story on the papers. It has bothered me for some time now, and I'm guessing it's the same for you. I hope you can put an end to this as soon as possible. I don't want to be the public enemy of the women in S City."

Then she intended to leave. "Thank you, Mr. Lu."

But just as she opened the door, a red figure rushed inside.

"Darren!"

Darren furrowed his brows and asked, "Miss Su, why are you here?" He then cast a displeased glance at Selina, who followed shortly after.

"Mr. Lu, Miss Su said that she must see you today. The security guards didn't dare to stop her... I'm sorry. It's my fault! Miss Su, you'll have to leave. Mr. Lu is busy right now."

"Darren!" Ignoring the secretary, Zoey walked up to Darren in her high heels. Joan held her breath as she passed. Zoey's perfume might have been expensive, but it was also very strong.

She was wearing a bright red strapless dress that revealed her fair shoulders. The outfit outlined her slender waist and showed her fair long legs. But even more eye-catching was her voluptuous chest. Her curvaceous body and beautiful face must draw a lot of attention in the streets.

"Grandpa has urged me several times to invite you to dinner at home. I know you're busy with work, but I think you should accept his invitation. Grandpa's getting old, and the only thing he hopes for at this point is for us to get married as soon as possible." Zoey tried to get close to Darren, but the latter subtly avoided contact with her. His brows were fixed in a knot since she came in.

Zoey could not help but feel anxious. The Su family and the Lu family had been friends for generations, and the elders wished for them to get married. Likewise, she had always been obsessed with Darren and would not marry anyone else. But Darren didn't seem to like her.

She had entertained many suitors since her teenage years. Most of them were from wealthy and powerful families. But with Darren, it seemed as if her charms didn't work. Had her family not decided on the match, Darren might not even give her a second look.

He was undoubtedly her greatest defeat.

Zoey had wanted to be reserved, but she couldn't wait any longer. Plus, there were too many women pinning their hopes on Darren. She needed to be cunning!

But she hadn't expected that Darren didn't drink the wine, and that the paparazzi she had hired to take pictures would photograph Darren with another woman! She was fuming when she saw the papers.

Joan didn't care about the drama at all. Silently, she tried to sneak away as Darren was getting pestered. But she didn't expect that he would stop her.

"Where are you going?"

Given Darren's booming voice, she couldn't pretend to have not heard anything. She merely gave a professional smile and said, "Thank you for the interview today, Mr. Lu. I know you're busy, so I won't waste your time anymore."

It was then when Zoey noticed Joan standing in the room. When she barged into the office, all of her attention was on Darren. After a few seconds of observation, she couldn't help but blurt, "Aren't you the woman in the newspapers?"

Darren did not miss the trace of disgust that flashed in Joan's eyes when she heard Zoey's words.

"I'm sorry. I don't know what you're talking about. I'm here for an interview, and since that's done, I have to go." She had not yet finished her sketch, so she wanted to go and finish it while the inspiration was still there. As for the drama that didn't involve her, she wanted nothing to do with it at all.

But things didn't go as she planned.

"You should know your place. Not all women are fit to be with Darren." Zoey looked at the suit Joan was wearing with disgust. Turning to Darren, she said, "Darren, I didn't know that this was your type, a woman with neither bust nor hips."

Joan sneered, "You're overthinking things. I'm not interested in him or his wealth. Besides, I don't think you're his type either."

Zoey's face turned red with anger. Meanwhile, Joan turned around indifferently and walked away.

"Miss Su." Darren's voice was calm, but anyone could tell that he was greatly displeased.

Just then, Zoey was worried that her bad manner had left a negative impression on Darren. She played with her fingers nervously and said, "Darren, I..."

"Stop playing nasty tricks. Don't think that I don't know what you've done behind my back. This time, I will let everything slide for the sake of the Su family. But if you dare do it again, don't blame me for being ruthless."

He looked gentle, but his words carried authority.

Zoey's face lost all color. She knew that her plot to start a scandal with Darren had been exposed. Nevertheless, she still tried to defend herself. "Darren, I don't know what you're talking about..."

Before she finished her words, Darren gave her a menacing glare. She closed her mouth immediately and didn't dare to say another word. She then let herself be escorted out by the secretary.

Darren slowly walked to the window and casually narrowed his eyes. He watched as Joan stepped out of the building. He looked like he was in deep thought.

After walking some distance, Joan heaved a sigh of relief. She didn't want to return to this damned place again. She didn't want to see the people in the building ever again.

By the time she arrived at the hospital, Linda's father had been declared dead due to brain hemorrhage. Looking at the brokenhearted daughter crying at his bedside, she felt pain in her chest as well. Had she been with her father during his last minutes, she knew she would have suffered, too.

Since he passed, she had only her stepmother and stepsister in the family, both of which had no affection for her. Even her husband, Scott, hurt her by cheating on her and sending her to prison for the sake of another woman!

Joan's heart ached so much that she could hardly breathe. These last years felt like a horrible joke. As it turned out, she was not as strong and open-minded as she had imagined.

When she looked at the time, she realized that it was already ten o'clock in the evening. Worrying about Linda, she decided to stay with her and help her arrange for the funeral.

The next day, Joan went back to the Gu family. She didn't want to come back at all, but she wanted to know where her father was buried. She had asked Linda about it, but to her disappointment, she didn't know about it at all.

She had only gone back to the Gu family once since she married Scott. As soon as she saw the house, she realized that things really had changed. Recalling the bankruptcy of the Gu Company, she couldn't even imagine how the rest of the family lived now.
