Chapter 2 Pour it out

Seraphina POV

Damien's words hung in the freezing air of the living room, a death sentence to the fragile, foolish hope I had harbored for three years. He stood over me, his Alpha aura pressing down on my chest like a physical weight, demanding absolute submission.

"Isabelle brings strength and alliances to this pack," Damien sneered, his jaw tight. "You bring nothing but a barren womb and a weak bloodline. If you ever try to undermine her, or if you fail to fulfill your only duty, I will personally see to it that the last remnants of the Gray family-your grandmother and your uncle-are exiled to the Rogue lands."

My breath hitched. He was using my only remaining family as collateral.

The suffocating scent of white musk and vanilla radiating from his skin suddenly made me violently nauseous. It was the scent of his future, a future that had no place for a wolfless mistake.

Without another word, Damien turned on his heel. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him. A minute later, the low roar of his Aston Martin echoed through the manor grounds, fading into the night. He was going back to her bed.

The mate bond was a rotting chain, and I was finally ready to cut it.

A verbal Rejection required both mates to be present, an agonizing ritual that would take hours I didn't have. I walked numbly into his mahogany-paneled study and pulled a sheet of heavy parchment from the drawer. My hand trembled, but my resolve was absolute as I wrote out the ancient Pack law phrasing.

I, Seraphina Gray, voluntarily relinquish all rights and titles as the Fated Mate of Alpha Damien Blackwood and Luna of the Blackwood Pack. I claim no assets. I seek only severance.

The moment I signed my name, a violent, tearing agony ripped through my chest. I collapsed to my knees, gasping for air as the Terminal Soul Wither fed on the severed bond, freezing my veins. But beneath the excruciating pain, my mind was finally clear.

I packed a small suitcase with the only things that truly belonged to me: my mother's star chart and my grandmother's knitted scarf. I left behind the designer dresses and the diamond jewelry.

As I dragged my suitcase into the foyer, a servant stepped out of the shadows. In her hands was a steaming mug of the dark, bitter herbal tonic Matriarch Cordelia forced on me daily to 'fortify my womb' for a powerful heir.

"Your tonic, Luna," the servant murmured, her eyes respectfully downcast.

I stared at the dark liquid that had poisoned my mornings for a year. "Dump it," I said, my voice hollow but steady.

Before she could process the shock, I walked out the front doors into the freezing night, leaving the golden cage behind forever.

The next morning, the human commercial district in the neutral zone was bustling with oblivious life. I stood at the counter of a sleek courier service, handing over the sealed envelope. I addressed it to Liam, Damien's Beta, at the Blackwood Enterprises Headquarters. It was the safest way to ensure it entered their legal system without violating Damien's strict order to keep our connection hidden from the public.

Damien wouldn't see it coming.

By 9:45 AM, I parked my car outside the Alpha Council's Detention Center. The towering gray stone walls reeked of silver and despair, a scent that made even my wolfless senses recoil.

A sharp spasm of the soul wither hit me, cold and merciless. I dry-swallowed another herbal painkiller the Healer had given me, gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. I checked the rearview mirror, applying a thick layer of concealer over my deathly pale skin and sliding on dark sunglasses. I couldn't let him see I was dying.

At exactly ten o'clock, the heavy metal gates groaned open.

A man stepped out into the bleak morning light. Jaxon 'Jax' Ryder. My adopted brother, a Rogue who had taken the fall and spent three years in this hellhole just to protect me. His dark hair was shorn close to his scalp, his jaw sharp, his eyes feral and untamed as he slung a battered backpack over his broad shoulder.

Seeing him, a fragile, desperate warmth flickered in my hollow chest. My only real family was finally free, and for the first time in years, I wasn't entirely alone.
