Chapter 1 Lenora Pov

I ran through the grass. Its leaves are coarse through my skin, causing some irritation. My eyes were focused straight, and I tried to run as fast as I could amidst the bodies that lay on the ground.

Blood covered the ground, like there had been a love feast. I could feel the pounding of my heart like a ticking time bond. The piercing scream of my brother and the wailing cries of my mother. At some point, I was tempted to go back and fight instead of being a coward.

Despite my mother's wail, I could still hear her voice echoing for me to run faster. I was losing my breath, and with the last ounce of my strength, I kept running further, my feet scarcely descended on the earth.

I woke up frightened to the core, breathing out both from my nose and mouth. Sweat trailed down the back of my neck. I placed a hand on my racing heart, trying to calm it down. Another night mare, the same as always hurting me in my subconscious.

I stood to my feet, taking the door to the right, which leads to the bathroom. I flashed water on my face, looking at my reflection in the mirror. I was met with a petite body. My ploughed nature has been raging, and I look so tenuous, like I was sick.

This wasn't me; I was a beauty to behold, but not anymore. I sighed. It wasn't enough to dwell in the past; I knew someday I would get back all I had lost.

I better start going before I am cautioned by Vivian again. I sighed while putting on my regular uniform for work. The sun has already risen. It felt chilly earlier in the mornings, and I tried so hard to resist myself from collapsing over the bed to get some more sleep. That was a bad idea.

Let me introduce myself. I'm Lenora, the daughter of the beta, but due to a twist of fate, I found myself at the omega rank. How pathetic?

I hastened my footsteps when I caught sight of Vivian walking behind me in the hallway that led to the pack house. I didn't want to get into her bad books today. I hastened my footsteps and hurriedly went to the back door to get my tools from the store room. I took off to the field. The place I was assigned to previously.

I sighed, relieved that she was out of sight. I trailed down to the field, which was some meters away from the pack house.

"Lenora," I heard a voice call behind me. I halted my steps. Is that Vivian? Have I been caught? I panicked within me, and I turned, recognizing the person I thought she didn't see.

My eyes widened when I saw Calista, the gamma's daughter. I thought she was busy in the garden. How did she see me, then?

I walked past Calista, who was planting flowers in the garden. I thought she didn't see me, but clearly she did.

"Yes, my lady, how can I be of help to you?" I bowed my head in respect.

She ignored me, urging me to follow her. What does she want from me now? I followed behind her without questioning her instructions.

"Vivian," she called when we approached the pack house. Vivian was the head Omega, who assigned our duties to us and made sure we carried them out. I bent my head to the ground, wondering why she was drawing Vivian back to me. I just escaped from her a few minutes ago.

"Yes, my lady," Vivian said, coming out of the kitchen.

"What can I do for you, my lady?" she bowed, reciting the same question whenever we omegas are called upon.

"Assign her some work at the role pole," she instructs. My heart dropped to the ground. Why?

The role pole was the hardest job; I had prayed several times not to be assigned over there. Why does she hate me so much?

She walked away with no hint of pity in her eyes. Should I be thinking of her pitying me, which was unlikely to come by?

"You, come along with me." Vivian's voice snapped me off while I trailed behind her to the pole.

"From here to that end," she pointed out, instructing me on the portion of work to be done by me. It was massive, and I could feel sadness.

"How was I going to finish this up before sunset?"

"You can figure that out yourself."

"I can't do this. Even 10 laborers can't finish this in a day," I protested.

"You have the nerves to defile my orders," she scolded, anger laced in her tone. I wished I could take back my words.

"You will work here for a week, and better start working now or kiss your dinner goodbye tonight," is the usual punishment for being starved.

I bent over, making peace with what had befallen me, and began working. The summer sun didn't take pity on me; it bore its rays at me without mercy.

"Witch," a voice called behind me. I didn't care to look around if I had company, but definitely I do.

I ignored their curses, focusing on my work without giving anyone any room for attention.

The next thing I felt was a smudge of mud on my dress; it came from a different direction.

"Witch, you deserve to die," one of the omegas blurted out anger etched in his tone. I can't pretend how those words caught on to me.

"Witches are meant to be burned; I wonder why you're still breathing," another said. I used my hand to shield my face, moving backwards to escape. Looking through the space in-between my fingers, I could count like about 10 of them.

After the day's work, I returned to the omega quarters. There was a line. Not to attract unnecessary attention to myself. I went to the last line, praying inwardly for no one to take notice of me.

When it was my turn, my plate filled with food was flung away, causing its contents to spill to the ground.

I whimpered, picking up some I could lay my hands on. The other omegas laughed at me as I picked up each grain.

I picked up the ones I could before running off to my room, tears dripping down my cheeks. I didn't deserve all this torment.

When I got to my room, I saw the image of my parents looking at me at my bedside. The only thing I had before I was driven out of the house.

"If only you're here." The memories keep flooding my head of the night of that incident. The darkest moment of life.

I lost it all the same day; the unexpected attack happened right in front of me. I watched my mother and brother defend me; my father wasn't close, resulting in my mother and my elder brother being killed.

Before Father could come, they were gone, and I was the only one rescued. This resulted in his father taking an overdose of hallucinogens, which eventually killed him.

Betas are recognized as high rankers and leaders of warriors at the time of war. I was pinpointed and accused of my father's death.

It wasn't painful that I lost my family right in front of me, but the accusations made my heart about to explode.

Even when I tried to explain and shut the wagging tongue, it was like fighting a whole nation that has a poisoned mind that I was the cause of my own father's death.

Here I am reduced to an Omega by Alpha Charles; I endured every torture.

I sniffed, and tears dripped down my cheek as I unlocked my emotional walls.

The pain was consuming me as I sat on my bed, sobbing. My stomach churned, reminding me once again that I hadn't had anything to eat but had already lost my appetite.

I took the window, shifting into my wolf form, and ran as fast as I could so I could feel better. Each time I remember each pain, it feels like it is about to consume me.

Shadows of leaves danced across the landscape, and the moonlight bathed everything in a soft and ethereal light. I stopped to catch my breath when moans and giggles filled my ear, and I wondered who could be out at this time of the night in the woods.

I hid under the tree truck and peaked my eyes, and there I saw them making out. I fed my eyes and couldn't stop the thought of finding my mate soon.

I was going to turn 18 soon, and I couldn't wait to meet my mate. He was going to protect us from others, and we are going to live happily. I smiled at myself as those thoughts ran through my head.
