Then I sat amidst the pile of corpses and waited calmly for the officials to arrive.
...
I put my daughter's dead body next to Merlin.
As he cried out in agony, I sat calmly in the major seat and served myself a bowl of soup.
The soup was made by my parents. It was as delicious as before and was always my favorite.
Just as the soup touched my lips, the magistrate stormed in with a group of guards.
Seeing Merlin and my parents' tragic situation, the magistrate was shocked. "Kelsey, have you lost your mind? How could you brutally murder your parents and your husband?"
One of the guards beside him turned pale and was trembling as they pointed at me and cursed angrily, "You beast! Mr. and Mrs. Ford treated you like a treasure, and your husband is so nice to you. What more could you possibly want? Did you have to kill them so cruelly on your daughter's hundred-day feast?"
Everyone glared at me and wished they could kill me immediately.
I smirked coldly.
Indeed, I should be satisfied.
I was my parents' only child.
Even though others mocked them for having no sons, they never considered having another child to share their love.
They were always worried that they weren't giving me enough affection.
I was raised in comfort and privilege. They chose the most distinguished young official in the capital to be my husband.
He had high status, but he was willing to wait for five years for me to come of age. He never took a concubine or even glanced at other women.
He gave me a good sense of security.
When I gave birth to our daughter, he was so excited he couldn't sleep for nights on end.
Seeing my weakness after childbirth, he specially asked my parents to come to his place to take care of me.
During the month after I gave birth, my mother took care of everything.
I didn't have to worry about a thing. I just focused on resting well.
This morning, when my mother brought me some soup, she gently wiped the sweat from my face and said, "You're weak. Don't attend the hundred-day feast. Otherwise, you might catch a cold and end up with post-birth complications."
I said hesitantly, "I'm the hostess. If I don't show up, others might think I'm rude and arrogant."
Her eyes reddened as she said earnestly, "If anyone dares to say a word, I won't let them off."
She had always been gentle and dignified. But she would abandon decorum whenever it concerned me in the past twenty years.
As usual, she nagged for quite a while.
Seeing I hadn't finished the soup, she glared at me and said, "Quickly finish the soup while it's warm. You'd better care about your own health more."
I smiled and finished the soup in one gulp. "Mother, I want to see the baby."
I hadn't seen my daughter for two days.
Her expression froze for a moment before she gently replied, "Alright. I'll have the nurse bring her over."
She tried to avoid my gaze.
Finally, her gaze landed on the book beside my bed.
It looked like she felt sorry for me. "Kelsey, you're no longer an official but Merlin's wife. Just enjoy your life in the mansion. Let Merlin handle the work for the emperor and empress. He is your husband, and it's his duty to support you and the family. Turn down the book project the empress gave you. Your health is the most important thing."
But if I turned down the task, I would be confined to my home. I was unable to enter the palace without being allowed.
However, to ease my mother's worries, I slowly nodded.
Only then did she go to the front courtyard to busy herself with the hundred-day feast.
My father, Phillip Ford, was afraid I'd feel lonely, so he came to keep me company.
2
He brought a warm jade piece, carved with an adorable little monkey.
It looked cute.
Then, he took out a better piece and gently placed it around my neck. "My skills aren't perfect, but I hope you like it."
I noticed his well-maintained hands covered in wounds, and my eyes reddened.
He was always silent and reserved, but his love for me was always there.
He said, "You almost died during childbirth. Take good care of yourself. Turn down the empress's book project. I'll take the blame for you. If she was angry, let her blame me."
I smiled and nodded.
Phillip was such a loving father.
What a pity!
After Phillip left, I still didn't see the nurse bring my daughter over.
While the front courtyard was bustling, the courtyard where I was recuperating remained quiet.
Feeling uneasy, I instructed the maid to prepare bathwater.
I wanted to bathe and change clothes.
The maid said hesitantly, "Mr. Harvey instructed us that you have to stay in bed for two months for recovery..."
I smiled, and my tone was firm, "I'll handle him. You're the maid who came with me from my parents' home, aren't you?"
She turned pale and dared not delay further.
After bathing, I carefully chose a bright red dress and headed to the front courtyard with the maid.
Phillip was speaking with the mansion's butler, while my mother was holding my daughter in the hall.
Seeing me enter, she immediately looked anxious. "Why did you come out? And you are dressed so lightly. How are you taking care of my daughter?"
She scolded the maid and quickly asked someone to fetch a cloak.
Phillip looked at me with deep concern. "Don't catch a cold here. You are weak."
I smiled and reassured them. "It's alright. Don't worry. You know I love lively gatherings."
I took my daughter from my mother and kissed her. "Has Merlin come home yet?"
Just as I finished speaking, Merlin hurried in.
Upon seeing me, his cold demeanor instantly softened.
"You look much better today than yesterday. You have color in your cheeks. But you still need to rest more," he said, reaching out to support my arm.
I dodged him with the baby in my arms.
For a moment, he was stunned. Both my parents looked over.
I gave Merlin a playful glance. "You're so cold, as you just came in. Don't bring it onto the baby. Go and change your clothes."
Then I turned to my parents and said, "There will certainly be many guests offering formal toasts and engaging in conversations at the banquet. It will be hard to eat peacefully. I'll have the cook prepare some simple dishes for us to snack on before the banquet."
My parents nodded with smiles.
Merlin sighed, "You are so considerate. What more could I ask for?"
After he washed up and changed, the dishes were brought there.
My parents served me soup, and Merlin picked food for me. He took good care of me in every detail.
Yet, I felt uneasy.
After patiently waiting for a moment, I stood up.
My parents and Clint looked at me nervously.
I said with a smile, "You go on eating. I want to check on my daughter."
As I reached the door, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that my parents and Merlin only ate the dishes I had touched.
I lowered my eyes calmly.
I gently took my daughter from the nurse's arms and sent her away. I gazed down at the baby in her swaddling clothes.
The baby smiled sweetly at me.
I had carried her in my belly for months and gave birth to her after several brushes with death.
I had imagined countless times that her first words would be calling me "Mommy."
Lowering my eyes, I took out a bottle of poisonous drink. Without any reluctance, I gently persuaded her to have it.
Then, I pulled out the sword Merlin had hung on the wall.
With one arm cradling the baby and the other wielding the sword, I strode into the hall.
3
My mother hurriedly asked, "Kelsey, why are you with the sword? Did someone offend you? Let me seek justice for you."
Yet she kept treating back.
Phillip's reaction was more direct.
He got up to run outside but collapsed at the door.
My mother went to help him, but as she crouched down, she too fell weakly.
I asked, seemingly puzzled, "Father, Mother, why did you run away when you saw me holding a sword?"
Merlin tried to take the sword away from me.
I kicked him in the chest, and he fell to the floor weakly.
Only then did he realize something was wrong. His face turned pale, and he asked, "When did you poison us? You clearly ate those dishes, too."
I smiled and said, "It is too bad that you calculated everything but didn't foresee the poison in the incense."
Smoke curled up from the incense burner by the window.
Merlin struggled to crawl towards the door. "For the sake of our marriage, please let me go."
"Alright," I said.
I ignored him and walked up to my parents. Then I pointed the sword at their throats.
Then, in their terrified expressions, I killed them with a single stroke.
I was unsatisfied and cut them into pieces.
Warm blood splattered onto my clothes.
I glanced down.
The outfit was chosen well. The bloodstains weren't obvious.
I strolled over to Merlin, who was still crawling outside. I stepped hard on his waist. "I don't have much strength, and it might hurt a bit. Bear with it."
Without mercy, I severed his limbs.
Watching Merlin's face turn ashen and hearing his agonized screams, I couldn't help but laugh.
Feeling satisfied, I stabbed him repeatedly like a madwoman.
When Merlin could no longer scream, I put the lifeless baby beside him. "For the sake of our marriage, I won't kill you."
I adjusted my clothes and sat in the main seat.
Then I served myself some soup.
At that moment, the magistrate kept questioning me.
I ignored him and slowly finished the soup. "Let me see His Majesty and Her Majesty. Otherwise, I won't say a word, even if you kill me." "I am the duchess appointed by Her Majesty and a female official. The matter I've committed should be addressed by Her Majesty."
The magistrate remained silent for a moment before instructing someone to report to the emperor and the empress.
Merlin had just been saved from death by the coroner and looked at me in shock.
He gazed at me with sorrow and anger. "Kelsey, Mr. and Mrs. Ford and I spoiled you and let you become so lawless and heartless. You even killed your daughter. She was only a little over a month old. She didn't do anything wrong. If you're suffering from postpartum depression and need to vent your anger, come at me."
Listening to Merlin's words, a guard, infected by his enraged emotions, drew his sword. "Sir, the evidence is clear now, and even in front of the Emperor, this criminal woman can't escape punishment. She is clearly delaying time. In my opinion, we should kill her now."
The magistrate sternly stopped him.
I looked at Merlin and finally shed tears I had held back for a long time. "Merlin, have you gotten used to acting after acting so long?? Do you have the guts to tell me the truth about who the baby is?"
