Chapter One
(Death escape)
Adams' POV
Just as I was about to leave the Berret's mansion, the shrill ringing of my phone sliced through the serene environment.
"What on earth do they want from me?" I groaned, frustration evident in my voice.
I reached for my pocket, my hands digging in as I grabbed my phone.
I squinted to make out the caller's ID,
"Adams speaking, what's the problem, Damian?" I asked, raising my brow.
"Sir," his voice quavered. "I think there's a big problem," he replied, a hint of fear in his voice.
"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice laced with worry as my temper flared.
"The pigs did a raid in your warehouse, I think they burnt some of your goods, " his voice low as fear enveloped it.
Cold shivers ran down my spine, as I bit my lips. I stood there, mute, my mind reeling in thoughts.
"Sir," he called, jolting me from my thoughts.
"Who did this?" my fist clenched, my breaths coming in short gasps.
"I think I have a hunch"
" Do you think or do you have a hunch?" My anger began to rise toward him
" I have a hunch it might be... "
"Damian," I said, exhaling deeply as I tried to calm my nerves. "Get to the route of all these and don't hesitate to get back to me," I said, hanging up the call.
I strode out of the mansion, unfazed by the bad news which hung heavy in the air.
I need not get upset with the news, I had someone I was going to meet. A slight change in my mood might ruin the whole meeting.
I clambered my car, the engine revved as I zoomed off, weaving out of the mansion and into the streets.
The moon bathed the earth with its ethereal glow, and the street lights passed by in a blur.
My fingers moved to the radio and I turned it on,
"Looks like I made it, look how far we've gone my lady," I hummed alongside the artist.
A few minutes later, I pulled up at the hotel's garage and climbed down, making my way into the hotel.
"Hello, Mr Adams," a professional smile running across her lips. "Good to have you on board,"
"Thank you Mary" I replied walking straight toward the elevator.
" Everything is in place for the night, Sir. Just as you requested. Your room number is 463..." Mary kept speaking, trying to keep up with my pace.
" Good. Thank you once again" I walked into the elevator, paying little attention to her words.
" Enjoy your evening, Sir," she said with a smile
Ding! The elevator rang and closed. Mary's face disappeared little by little as the door was completely closed.
I kept counting each floor as I moved, but then I noticed a twist in my thoughts. The way people around the hotel gaped at me while I walked to the elevator.
Hope nothing was wrong with the way I dressed, or was there something going on?
I looked at the top of the elevator, it was only 250-350. I was close.
Ding! The elevator rang again and the door went wide open. I exhaled heavily and walked out headed to find room 463.
There it was! Room 463 which had him behind its closed door. I shrieked before tapping on the doorbell.
"Hey" behind held breaths I said to the beautiful masculine image standing in front of me.
"Right on time," he said amidst smiles. "Come on in" he let me in.
"Happy birthday, Ethan" I could only say before he locked my lips in a wet kiss.
Has he been thinking about it all evening while waiting for me? I thought to myself still having my lips locked in.
"I got your package earlier today at work and this room is a bomb. Thank you" Ethan said when he had finally let go of my lips.
"I hope you like it?"
" I love it!" he said pride and happiness evident in his voice.
"I'm glad you love it. I have more surprises" I whispered seductively.
"We have the whole night, let's make good use of it" I smiled, he held me and dragged me to the center of the room, his grip was firm.
I was swept off my feet at the thought of what Ethan meant by making good use of the night. My palms were automatically sweaty and my chest was too small for my heart to contain.
Having watched him pull off my suit and unbutton my shirt I knew it was going to be a long night indeed. Soon our lips got entangled in another round of wet kisses while we searched our way to the giant bed in the room.
"Did you hear that?" Ethan paused raised brows I shook my head still fighting to continue.
"Did you hear something?" I asked planting kisses on his face while he kept avoiding kisses on his lips.
"I think I heard gunshots..."
I jolted up the moment I heard the same. What was going on? This is one serene environment that hardly had such activities.
"I'll go check" Walking towards the window Ethan said
"No don't! It might be dangerous" I was too late to stop him as he was already looking through the window
"I think we are surrounded, Adams"
"Leave the..." I couldn't complete my sentence at
the sound of broken glasses, sliced through the atmosphere as the bullet hit Ethan.
"Fuck! " Ethan groaned as he bled, due to the impact of the bullet.
The gunshots kept coming into the room and Ethan was bleeding profusely from his arm, his blood staining the marble floor.
"We need to leave Ethan. We've been tracked," I hissed, biting my lips in anger.
With my hands digging into my pocket I took out my phone and with shaky hands, I dialed Damian's number.
"We need help. Ethan has been shot," I couldn't say more 'cause I needed to leave with Ethan immediately.
He kept groaning in pain and I had to think of a way to leave the hotel without being harmed.
I tried getting up to take Ethan out but the sniper was one hell of a sniper. I got shot on my shoulder and the attacker kept shooting.
"Holy fucking day!" I groaned in pain as I fell on the vase flower, its sharp edge piercing into my open wound.
I needed to be strong for Ethan. I got up again and with a speed of light, I hurried out of the room with Ethan cradled in my arms.
Avoiding any more injury we successfully left the hotel and through the escape door, we found ourselves roaming in the forests. I finally took out my ringing phone.
"Get an ambulance immediately. We'll be at the safe house" I managed to say amidst short breaths.
"Adams you're hurt," Ethan said in pain trying to touch my wound
"Don't say a word. You're losing a lot of blood. Damian is getting an ambulance. I'm taking us to the safe house" I said all in one breath.
Just then, everywhere began to spin, moving in circles. The last thing I could remember was the muffled sound of bullets on the tarred road, then, everything went... blank.
(A FAILED ATTEMPT)
ANDREW'S POV
I was convinced there was no way Adams would survive such an attack. I gave a broad smile while I sat waiting for the boys to come back with some good news. Perhaps with his head on a platter. I couldn't resist taking quick looks at the clock and expecting them to join us any time soon.
"Any call from them yet?" I asked Leo.
"Not yet Sir" he replied.
I was becoming impatient. I've had so much money put into having Adams dead tonight and nothing would give me peace knowing he is.
"Your mom, Sir" Leo came up to me with my phone.
"Take it away"
I wasn't in the mood to talk to her. I craved nothing but good news about Adam's death.
It was taking so much time and my patience began to run down. I had to go back to the mansion as soon as possible so I don't raise any eyebrows.
Soon sounds of cars were heard outside the building and I jolted up. It was almost taking forever for them to return.
"Successful?" Curiosity was obvious in my voice and worry was written all over my face.
"There was a little bit of distraction, Sir," Allen said.
I smirked. Was I expecting it? Maybe I was. I sat down and they all had their faces down.
"Adams is still alive," I hissed.
"Sir, with the shots I'm sure he wouldn't survive this time," one of them said, his voice choked in fear.
"Where was he shot?" I asked
I knew that would give me hope but I was disappointed when he answered
"His shoulder, Sir"
"His shoulder?" I asked, a wild grin spreading on my lips.
"We are sorry, sir" their voices masked with fear.
My gaze darted around the corners falling on their miserable faces. I could feel a mixture of anger and disappointment course through my veins.
"Was Ethan harmed?"
"Y...es, he took the first shots," Allen replied, his eyes fixated on the earth beneath him.
"You pathetic slimy bastards. I pay you fucking money and all you do is drag your disappointed sorry ass here to tell me this?" my voice cold and deadly.
"I'm sorry, " He said, trying to sound casual.
I bit my lips trying so hard to control my anger and holding back myself from using the rifle in front of me.
"I was told you were the best hitman, I paid greatly just to have you down here and you think I did that just to hear you say sorry?" I scoffed.
I rose from my chair as I lit a cigarette, taking a long drag in and exhaling, making the air cloudy as the smoke hung heavy. I traced my feet to Allen, their face still fixed on the floor.
A mafia privilege I enjoyed so badly was having others and rules bend to your will.
With the tip of my finger, I raised his face, still maintaining a cold demeanor and feigning a look that would make them think that I was unfazed by their pathetic news.
He was a very fine man. His neatly trimmed mustache and dark blue eyes.
"I promise to bring you his head the next time," he said directly to my face.
A low mirthful chuckle escaped my lips, the tension in the poorly illuminated room was palpable.
"I know you will," I whispered, still maintaining the wild grin on my lips.
I was very aware my brother would survive the attack, he was highly trained and was willing to do anything to track the one who shot Ethan.
"I can take care of that too," he said reassuringly
I walked back to my chair and sat down. Crossed my hands and began to tap my fingers rhythmically; a sign I was seethed in discomfort.
"I'm giving you a second chance, do not let me regret it, " I said, rolling my eyeballs.
"I will not"
"Of course, you won't," I said and without any second thought or restraint, my fingers ran across the table, picking my pistol.
"I won't be needing your services," I pulled the trigger.
The bullet rushed to his shocked face, creating a tiny hole in his forehead. I watched his disgusting blood drip from his forehead, staining the ground beneath him.
"Take this fool out of here and get me Lorenzo on the phone immediately," I ordered Leo.
I walked out of the building with Leo running after me. I got into the car and Leo handed over the phone to me.
"Yes?" Lorenzo's strong voice blared over the phone.
"Get me a better man than this dog you sent. I do not enjoy stories. Besides his body would be shipped down back to you" I said and ended the call
"Sir, what do we do with his body?"
"Take me out of here, Leo"
Leo got into the car and we drove back to the mansion. I had to be there before Adams, I was so furious and each time I remembered he wasn't dead I kept getting furious.
Once at the Mansion there she was waiting patiently for the same news that I wished I had. I walked past her into the house straight into my room. She followed me thinking I had good news
"Is he dead yet?" She asked
I shook my head in total disappointment and I could feel the same in her.
"But Ethan was badly hurt," I said like that should even help the matter.
"I do not care about Ethan you know"
I pulled off my suit and went to the bar for a glass of strong wine. It was hard to believe that Adams survived the night with all the arrangements I had made.
"Arrrrrgh!!!" I yelled so loudly and threw the glass against the wall and it broke into different fragments.
I spent seconds staring at the broken glasses and something in me silently wished it was happiness that had made me throw the glass.
"I want to be left alone," I whispered, my eyes still fixed on the broken glasses.
"We need to talk about this when you are more calm," she said before leaving the room.
"What!" I screamed at the person who was knocking.
"Sir, John is waiting at his study" Leo's voice came from behind the door.
"I'll be out in 10"
I quickly changed into something more casual and left the room for John's study room. I tapped twice before entering the room. He had black shades on but the moment I was seated he took it off.
"Adams was attacked earlier this evening, I just went off the phone with Damian."
"Is he dead?"
"No, he's not, he only sustained a little injury"
"Little injury huh?" I smirked.
"This might be Carlo's doing" he ignored my pettiness and continued.
"I think so too. Where is Adams now?"
"Damian didn't say"
I rolled my eyes in disappointment. How can this night not be the night I finally have Adams dead? I leaned backward and spread my arms on the edge of the couch.
"I do hope he's safe" I whispered.
"Send a word across to the other Lords, let them know what happened to Adams, all eyes must be on the lookout. Carlo has awakened the deadlier part of me."
"We shouldn't be in a hurry to make a decision. I suggest we wait for Adams to return first"
I feared he might think otherwise, but luckily he agreed. I knew he would always be hasty with his decisions when it came to Adams. He has been fond of him ever since we were kids. He always says he saw everything about him in Adams.
Maybe this has made me jealous over the years and has also made me more determined to have Adams out of the way for me to become the next Mafia Lord.
With Adams in the way, John might not let me take over from him and I would never let Adams be the next Lord even if it meant both of us going down together. I was ready to do whatever it takes to have full control of everything and nothing would stop me.
John's phone beeped and he took it up, the moment he dropped it he said
"He's at the hospital now"
I smiled and took up my phone, my fingers running across the keyboard.
"Track the hospital Adams and Ethan are in immediately and send me a location" I texted Leo.
CHAPTER 3
ADAM'S POV
Remembering the promise I had made to Ethan before leaving the hospital, I gave out a loud sigh as I pushed the door to the room that had both John and Andrew sitted and waiting for me.
Both father and son's eyes fell on me immediately as I walked into the room.
"Who did this?" John asked with his hoarse voice not even waiting for me to sit down.
I sat across the room fixing eyes full of anger and rage on Andrew. If only I could go against my promise to Ethan I would surely pounce on him and make him pay.
"I already sent men to get to the root of it" I replied still glaring angrily at Andrew
"Good then. What have you done towards the goods that were destroyed?"
I turned my head to look at John. Unbelievably I stared at him. Was this the only thing he was thinking about right now?
"I was attacked and shot. I haven't been able to get back to Damian"
"You're alive. Business should come next" John replied
"Lives were lost. As we speak someone is lying in the hospital badly injured"
"Speaking of someone, who is this?" Andrew asked and both John and I turned to face him.
"A business partner of mine" I replied with a folded fist. My face turned red.
"I'll have guards surround the hospital so this partner would be safe" John added
"You don't have to, I've got everything under control"
"Get the farmer in charge of the warehouse to pay for the damaged caused" John concluded and stood up
"I will"
"Andrew get me everything that I need to know about the attack on your brother immediately" John ordered and Andrew cleared his throat stopping John from leaving the room.
"I have something, did a little enquiry and I have just one question"
"Speak"
Both my eyes and Andrew's eyes locked in fury. I knew this was done by him. I had caught a glimpse of one of his guards at the hotel. I only remembered at the hospital sitting beside Ethan.
"Is this business partner of yours a Lady?" Andrew asked still having his eyes locked with mine
I could feel John's bulgy eyes staring at me even without looking at him. I knew he was a hundred percent interested in what I had to say.
"What has that got to do with me being attacked and shot?"
"Stop making this a big deal man. Answer the damn question" Andrew retorted "Unless you are hiding something"
"I do not have time for this" with a shaky voice I replied and stood up.
I walked past John almost at the door when I was frozen to my bones at the next question Andrew threw at me.
"Are you into men?"
What the... I hurriedly turned back to the room. I tried to avoid John's eyes. He was still waiting for me to say something.
"Are you trying to get on my nerves right now?" in defense I asked Andrew
"Answer the question Adams" John ordered and I looked at him
"I am not into men" I boldly gave out my reply
"Very well then, I'm off" with that John left the room and finally it was just the both of us
"What do you think you are doing?" I asked Andrew, my anger resurfacing again
"John needs to know that his favorite child is gay" he replied, his fist folding up like he knew I've been planning to punch him ever since I walked into the room.
"And you think it's getting you anywhere close to being the heir?"
"Adams Cosa Berret need I remind you that I'll rather die than have you take over father's legacy"
"Then get ready to die, cause for every drop of blood that left Ethan's body I will make you pay bit by bit"
I turned and left the room ignoring his threats. I took out my phone and dialed Damian's number.
"Get the car ready, we are visiting the old farmer" I headed to my room to get changed.
****
Everywhere was quiet and it baffled me. I looked out through the car and nothing seemed of life was moving, not even a sound.
"It's awkwardly quiet" I said to Damian
"I'll go check, wait right here" he stopped the car and went down to check on the farmer.
I was alone and the thought of Ethan crept into my mind. I placed a call across to him and it connected almost immediately.
"Hey" his voice smoothly spoke over the receiver
His voice sent comfort to my heart and once again the thought of what Andrew had done to destroy our perfect night last night made me furious again.
"You good?" I asked happy to hear his voice
"Yes. Only wondering when you'd be coming over"
"I will soon. I'm at the warehouse with Damian" I looked out through the car as I saw Damian leaving the house. "I'll drive in once I'm done here"
"Alright, see you soon"
"Bye"
"You need to see this Sir" Damian got closer to
the car and I helped myself out of the car.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I entered the farmer's house. I turned to Damian, disappointment in his eyes.
"John has been here" I looked around the house to find a clue.
"I'll go check on the birds" Damian left through the back door into the farm.
I walked over the bodies on the floor and got to the shelf in the room. I kept looking around like I knew I would find something.
"Yes?" I asked as Damian retuned
"All cleared" he shook his head in disbelief
"Both the birds?" I asked rhetorically
I went back to my search. I've been at murder places done by John and I knew I'd surely see what I was looking for.
"Let's leave, I need to go see Ethan" I said to Damian as he dipped his hand into his pocket to get out his ringing phone
"Your father," he mumbled before taking the call.
I ignored him and went to examine the dead bodies on the floor. The farmer, his wife and four kids lay lifeless. As I bent to the wife's dead body Damian said we needed to leave
"John said we should leave immediately, the boys are coming to set it up on fire"
I got up and we headed back to the mansion. I rushed into my room and changed into something more comfortable I could wear till morning and was almost leaving when I was stopped by one of John's guards. John was waiting for me again.
He was already seated but this time with Isabelle and Andrew. He was going through a pile of papers on the table.
"You're all dressed" Andrew taunted "More meetings tonight?"
I ignored him and took a seat, I didn't want to think about anything other than Ethan.
"I moved all the goods that weren't damaged to a new warehouse and I want you to take Andrew with you to go see them" John said still faced down into the papers
"Now?" Shocked to the bones I asked
"Any place of more importance would you rather be?" John asked me looking up at me for the first time since I got into the room.
"No not really, just have something to meet up with"
"Andrew can go alone then" Isabelle suggested
"No!" John threw a fist "You must be at the warehouse tonight"
"But he has someone more important to meet up with" Andrew gave me a quick glance but I refuse to give in to what he wants.
"Fine I'll go" I exhaled deeply.
"Life of a Cosa Berret " I thought leaning backwards as we waited for the guards to get the car ready
