Tittle: The Bounty
Chapter One: Past Life
I've done what you asked for, here's the body, now lift the bounty.
*******************************************
One fateful evening, as I sat alone in my dimly lit apartment, I reminisced about the events that led me down the path of destruction.
My name is Jay Wilson, am thirty six years old and a resident of El Paso, an island known for its outstanding beauty, peaceful nature and its unique scenery. Everyone who had ever visited the island always had something good to say about it but what no one realized was that it was all just a farce for what really goes on in the island. For people like us who have lived there all our lives, we know that all those were just a charade.
El Paso is the home of one of the most notorious drug lords, a place filled with so much evil and mischievous things and all these kept hidden from the outside world, and I won't say that I am completely innocent from all the bad things that have happened on the island.
It all started after the tragic accident that claimed both my parents' lives when I was just a teenager. We tried asking for help from family members, friends and close associates, but no one agreed to help us, everyone turned a blind eye to all our misfortune so, my younger brother, Luke, and I were left to fend for ourselves.
We were all alone but I knew that I had to do something so that we could survive. I started stealing just so that we could afford a days' meal, it was during one of my attempts I got caught by a man, unknown to me, was a drug lord. He took pity on me and took me in. Desperation clouded my judgment, and I allowed my pain to guide me towards the wrong crowd. I found solace in the company of Vandal Montero, a notorious drug lord in the city. Vandel took me under his wing, offering me money and protection in exchange for my loyalty and services. I soon became entangled in the volatile world of drugs, violence, and deceit.
Gradually, I became an expert drug pusher and that's how my journey to the top began until I finally became his right hand man. To some he was called "Aturo Beltran levy(the boss of bosses) to others he was called El Tamalon(the big tamale), but his real name was Vandel Montero, a was a very brutal and merciless man.
Everyone in El paso feared him because he behaved like the devil himself, those who worked under him, did there very best to be on his good side because anyone that got on his bad side ended up losing a body part or worst case scenario their ife and that was only after undergoing brutal torture. Out of all the hard drugs he sold, the one he made the most profit from was selling cocaine.
Apart from the drug trafficking business,he was also involved in other illegal things like human trafficking, contract killing and prostitution but all this other business of his was mainly done in the city. He was like the modern day Pablo Emilio Escabor, a popular Colombian drug lord and narco terrorist who was the sole founder of the "Medellin Cartel" ; he was one of the wealthiest criminals in history, and I guess Vandel wanted a legacy just like that for himself.
With the money I made from the business, I was able to train my brother to school and provide a comfortable life for us but all this fortune was at the expense of those who died because of the drugs I sold but I was too greedy and selfish to care.
For years, I immersed myself in this dark underworld. I compromised my values, participating in heinous acts that kept me alive but burdened my soul. With each passing day, I witnessed the devastating consequences of his actions: families torn apart, lives ruined, and innocent bloodshed staining the streets. However, the allure of money and power blinded me from the truth.
The turning point in my life came with the unexpected passing of my beloved brother. He overdosed drugs, the very one's I sold to a lot of people had now taken the life of the last family I had left. I couldn't forgive myself for his death because whether I accepted the fact or not it was still my fault. Luke had always been my anchor, reminding me of the goodness that still existed within me. The loss hit me hard, shattering the protective facade I had put up over the years.
Grief consumed me and i found myself questioning the purpose of my existence. I realized that i had contributed to the pain and suffering that had claimed the life of my brother. Guilt gnawed at my conscience, urging me to right my wrongs and seek redemption.
Determined to break free from the chains that bound me, I made a daring decision. I severed ties with Vandel Montero, betraying the man who had offered me shelter in my darkest moments. With newfound clarity, I embarked on a mission to redeem his soul and cleanse the tarnished chapters of his past life.
It was during that period I met Ryan Finley,an undercover detective that worked for DEA(drug enforcement administration),which is a federal agency responsible for enforcement of law and regulations governing narcotics and controlled substances, and they also work to immobilize drugs.
The agency had been working hard since it's creation to curb the spread of drugs amongst the various nations of the world and punish anyone caught or connected to the drug business.
After giving him all the evidence he needed to successfully put an end to the drug business in El Paso. He headed back to the city to inform his superiors so that a task force could be assembled to raid the island. I didn't bother informing the local authorities of El Paso because I knew that they were all under the payroll of vandel.
The day the island was raided was one of the most unforgettable days for the residents of El Paso. The agents raided all the drug dens, arrested the people involved in the manufacturing, distribution and trafficking of the drugs to both within and outside the island. So many weapons and all other harmful equipment were confiscated and finally the mastermind behind it all, Vandel was arrested.
The raid was successful and it was all thanks to the detailed information I had provided. That day, El Paso was swept clean of all the drugs, and all the illegal activities came to an abrupt end. I was also arrested for the part I played in the business. Before Vandel was taken out of the island, he said something to me that I will never forget. Before he entered the helicopter, he turned back and he smiled at me.
"Jay, I will be seeing you soon". He said before the helicopter finally left the island. I spent five years in jail and during this period, I made friends who helped me find my way back on the right path. I also worked hard to be a better and more refined man. After that, I was released on parole. I returned back home to El Paso and started over a new chapter of my life.
Chapter Two: New Reality
Ding!! Dong!! Ding!! Dong!!
"Catherine dear, someone's knocking at the door. Could you go check it out?" Gabriella called from the kitchen.
"Yes, mommy." Catherine replied, standing up from the pile of toys she had been playing with and rushed over to the door. As soon as she opened it and saw the person standing in front of her, she screamed with joy and jumped to give him a big hug. It was none other than Mason Bennett, the best friend of Jay Wilson and Catherine's godfather.
"Oh my gosh, Cathy darling, it's been so many years since I last saw you. Back then, you were just a little girl and now, you're all grown up." Mason observed, giving her a princess twirl.
"I've missed you too, Uncle Mason. I always asked my dad why you never came to visit us anymore. He always told me that you were busy working in the city and you would come to visit us soon, but you never showed up. I started to think that you no longer cared about us." Catherine replied with a sad look on her face.
"Oh no, my angel, that isn't true. I am really sorry that I couldn't come and visit you or even call to hear your voice, but I promise that from now on, I'm going to try and make up for all the years that I couldn't spend with you." Mason said, trying to cheer her up.
"You pinky promise?" Catherine replied, stretching her pinky finger.
"I pinky promise." Mason said, crossing pinky fingers with hers.
"Alright then, but if you go back on your promise, the Grinchy monster will come and haunt you when night falls." Catherine replied, trying to sound scary.
"The Grinchy monster? What exactly is that?" Mason asked, trying to figure out where Catherine had gotten that kind of idea from.
"Well, it's a huge and scary monster which comes at night to torment those who don't keep the promise they made." Catherine replied, sounding very serious.
"Cathy dear." Mason called, raising one of his eyebrows.
"Yes, uncle?" She replied.
"Have you been watching too many cartoons again?" Mason asked, almost certain that it was the only way she could come up with something as hilarious as that.
"Uhm....no, not really." Catherine denied, rolling her eyes suspiciously.
"Catherine." Mason called her name again.
"Alright, fine....yes I've been watching cartoons, but only a little. But please don't tell mom and dad about it because they might scold me if they find out." Catherine blurted.
"Alright, then I won't tell them anything. But only on the condition that you won't let it affect your grades at school." Mason said after listening to Catherine's plea.
"Alright then, I promise." Catherine replied, her mood lightening up again.
"Catherine, who's at the door?" Gabriella asked as she came out of the kitchen and entered the living room.
"Hello there, Gabriella." Mason greeted Gabriella with a warm smile.
"Mason, you're back. It's so good to see you again." Gabriella replied happily, giving him a hug.
"I've really missed you all so much." Mason said as Gabriella ushered him to sit and Catherine left the room to continue playing with her toys.
"It's been two years since you left El Paso. After that, we didn't hear a single word from you... No calls, no texts, nothing at all. We began to wonder if anything bad happened to you." Gabriella speculated, still finding it hard to believe that Mason had returned after disappearing for years.
"Well, I won't deny that it has been really tough for me these past few years. Since I returned to the city, things haven't been easy. With the criminal record I have, it wasn't easy getting a job or even finding a place to live. No one wanted to associate with an ex-convict. After struggling for a while, I was able to find a decent job and a good neighborhood to live in." Mason explained.
"Oh Mason, you know you didn't have to do all this on your own. You could have always asked us for help. We would never have turned you down because you're like family to us." Gabriella queried, looking a little bit disappointed about Mason's decision.
"I know Gabriella, but you and Jay have done so much for me. I remember when I first met Jay. It was during the time I was serving my jail sentence for a crime that I didn't commit. The other inmates always took out their anger and frustrations on me. I was always beaten up and bullied. But that all changed when Jay arrived. He defended and protected me and taught me how to stand up for myself, even though he didn't really know me.
"After he finished his jail sentence, I spent two extra years in prison before I was finally released. I didn't have a home anymore. My parents disowned me and no one agreed to help me. But Jay offered me his home to stay at El Paso, and you were also very kind to me, not minding the fact that I was an ex-convict. You treated me with great generosity. After all the good deeds you've shown me, how could I possibly ask for more? I am forever indebted to your family, and I promise that one day, I will repay your kindness." Mason explained, filled with gratitude.
"It's our pleasure, I'm just glad we could help.
"Anyway, where's Jay? I haven't seen him since I arrived." Mason observed.
"Jay left early this morning. He received an urgent call from the office. I'm not sure when he will return, but you are more than welcome to wait for him." Gabriella suggested.
"No, it's fine. There's something urgent I need to take care of, so I can't stay long either. But I'll surely come back tomorrow." Mason said, getting ready to leave.
"Uncle Mason, Uncle Mason." Catherine called as she rushed out of the room and sat next to Mason.
"Yes, my little angel." Mason said, holding Catherine in his arms.
"My birthday is coming up soon, and Mom and Dad promised to throw me a big party. Are you going to come?" Catherine asked excitedly.
"Of course, baby girl. I will definitely attend your party. I wouldn't miss it for anything in the world. And you know what? I'm also going to get you a really special gift, and I'm sure you're going to love it a lot." Mason said, making Catherine very happy.
"Yippee!" Catherine replied, happily jumping around the house.
"Alright now, Catherine, your Uncle Mason has somewhere important he needs to be. Now say goodbye to him." Gabriella said.
"Goodbye, Uncle Mason." Catherine waved after him.
*****************************
The Next Day
Ding!! Dong!! Ding !!Dong. The doorbell rang.
My heart raced as I opened the door to find Mason standing there, a somber expression etched on my face. Memories of my past flooded back, and I instantly felt a mix of worry and anxiety.
"Mason," I greeted him cautiously, stepping aside to invite him into the house. "It's been so long, old friend. What brings you here after all these years?"
Mason stepped inside, his eyes scanning the room as if to make sure we were alone. "It's good to see you, Jay," he said, his voice low and serious. "But I'm afraid I bring troubling news."
I exchanged a worried glance with Gabriela, who quickly left the living room along with Catherina. I motioned for Mason to continue.
"It's about Vandel," Mason finally revealed. "He's been released from prison and is returning to the island."
The name sent chills down my spine. Vandel had been my boss growing up, but everything changed when my brother . I had distanced himself from Vandel, but the scars from that time still ran deep.
"Jay, you just have to calm down, all this anger and Panic won't change anything". Mason said, trying to keep me from getting worked up over the issue at hand.
"I know that, but what can I do? I am worried that something bad might happen to my family, especially my little daughter, but you're right, panicking won't solve anything. I just have to calm down and think about what to do next". I replied, finally trying to calm myself.
"Breakfast is ready, are you guys hungry". Gabriella called from the kitchen.
"Am sorry Gabriella, but i won't be able to stay for breakfast today,i have somewhere important i need to be right now,but not to worry,i will definitely drop by tomorrow". Mason said after checking his wristwatch and standing up to leave.
"You all should stay safe, bye". Mason said as i escorted him out of the house.
After a few minutes, I returned home. I sat silently on the chair and sank into a very deep thought.
"Jay". Gabriella called but i couldn't hear her, I was too deep in thoughts to hear her call my name.
"Jay". she called again but this time more loudly which startled me.
"Am sorry, i didn't mean to startle you,but ever since Mason left, you've been really absent minded". Gabriella asked looking a bit worried about my sudden change of attitude
"No, it's nothing, I'm fine, no need to worry". I said, trying to give her a reassuring smile.
"Alright then, it's time to eat". Gabriella concluded, finally dropping the issue.
"Sure, let's go". I said standing up as we headed for the dining table".
Throughout the day, I wasn't myself anymore, now that vandel was back on the island,I wasn't ready to just sit around and wait for Vandel to come after me, so I started looking for ways to prevent the danger I sensed was going to befall my family soon. I tried reaching out to Ryan, my friend from the DEA, but the call wasn't going through either. The last time I spoke to Ryan was years ago, and ever since then, we've never spoken again. Could something bad have happened to him and if so, was it related to Vandel". I thought to myself again.
But that couldn't have happened and if it did, I would have already heard of it already. But I couldn't have happened and if it did, i would have already heard of it already. But I couldn't have happened and if it did, i would have already heard of it already. But I couldn't just sit here waiting for vandel to find me. Then i thought of an idea, what if i left El Paso for now, that wouldn't be a good idea either.
Catherine wouldn't be able to understand the sudden change of environment, she was born and spent basically all her life in El Paso and taking her away so suddenly from her home town wouldn't be a good idea, and how was i supposed to tell Gabriella that our lives were in great danger, it will surely cause her to Panic. Another big obstacle to this idea was that Vandel wasn't going to just sit back and allow me leave the island, probably by now,he already had men stationed at the every exit road to El Paso, so there was no escape for me, but i wasn't going to back down or let him have his way.
That night, when I went to bed,I had a very bad nightmare. In my dream, I was standing outside the doorstep of my house. When I opened the door and entered, I saw Vandel sitting on one of the couches in my house. Gabriella and Catherine were lying in a pool of blood on the floor. As soon as I saw their dead bodies, I woke up immediately, sweating and shaking. I couldn't sleep after the nightmare so I left the bedroom to get some air.
Chapter 3: The Chase Begins
I awoke before the break of dawn, fully aware that today held special significance for my family. Catherine, my beloved daughter, was turning eight years old, marking a milestone in her journey through childhood. She possessed a brilliant mind and a compassionate heart, and as her father, my greatest desire was to ensure her happiness and well-being. Despite her condition as an asthmatic, her determination and spirit remained unwavering, inspiring me every day.
My wife, Gabriella, still fast asleep, I seized the opportunity to quietly slip out of the house and pay a visit to the toy store. The previous day had been unexpectedly tumultuous, with the news of Vandel's release catching me off guard. Nevertheless, I was determined to secure the perfect birthday present for Catherine, a task I had regretfully postponed.
As I made my way to the store, a haunting sensation of being watched crept over me, causing me to glance over my shoulder repeatedly. Yet, each time I turned, there was no one to be seen. Perhaps my mind was playing tricks on me, or perhaps I was simply overly vigilant. Regardless, I entered the toy store and approached the counter where Mrs. Elvy, the kind-hearted and helpful owner, awaited.
"Good morning, Mrs. Elvy," I greeted her warmly upon entering the store.
"Ah, Jay, you're up bright and early today," Mrs. Elvy observed.
"Yes, indeed. I've come to collect the new collection of Barbie toys I ordered last week. My apologies for not being able to retrieve them as planned yesterday. Unexpected circumstances arose, but I do hope I'm not too late," I explained, hoping that the coveted toys for Catherine's collection were still available. She had been pleading for them for months.
Mrs Elvy smiled kindly, assuaging my concerns. "Fear not, Jay. The toys are still here, ready for you. As a matter of fact, let me offer them as a gift for Catherine's birthday. It's my pleasure to contribute to her happiness. I'll even drop by later this evening to personally extend my wishes to her," she graciously offered.
A wave of gratitude washed over me as I attempted to convey my appreciation. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Elvy. Your generosity is deeply moving. Catherine will be overjoyed to receive these gifts from you."
"You're most welcome," she replied with a warm smile. "It's truly my pleasure, Jay. I have always admired Catherine's resilience and kindness, despite her asthma. She possesses a remarkable spirit."
"I couldn't agree more," I replied, touched by Mrs. Elvy's understanding of Catherine's struggles. "Your words mean a great deal to me. It's heartwarming to know that others recognize her strength."
With the toys now safely in my possession, I expressed my gratitude once more and bid Mrs. Elvy farewell. As I stepped out into the bustling streets, a sudden gust of wind whipped through, causing me to shiver involuntarily. The feeling of being observed returned, intensifying with each passing minute. It was as if a pair of invisible eyes were tracking my every move.
On my way back home from the toy store, I decided to drop by a pastry store to get the famous "Marbled tres leches cake". It was Cathy's favourite dessert. After making the payment i left the pastry store and headed back home. I stood across the street from my house, waiting for the road to clear up.
As soon as i was sure that there wasn't any movement on the road anymore, I immediately entered the road but all of a sudden, a car came out of nowhere and began to speed directly towards me, but fortunately for me, i was able to quickly move out of the road before the car could hit me and the driver immediately sped off.
"Hey, are you crazy or what,do you wanna kill me". I shouted after the driver but i got no reply. I gave a heavy sigh and entered into my house. I met Gabriella had already started the decorations for the party.
"Good morning sweetheart". I greeted, calling her attention as i dropped the gifts on the table.
"Morning my love". Gabriella replied giving me a peck on my cheek. When i woke up this morning, you had already left the house, i was really worried you know, where exactly did you go to so early this morning". Gabriella asked as she began to take out the box containing the decorations from the shelves.
" I went out to get the gifts for Cathy, am sorry i made you worry so much, i promise it won't ever happen again." I said trying to reassure her.
"Jay are you alright". Gabriella questioned, as she noticed the uneasiness in my voice.
"Yea.....yes am fine". i stammered trying to stop my voice from shaking.
"Jay Wilson, you had better start talking now is or else....". Gabriella threatened.
"I almost got into an accident on my way home". I finally opened up.
"Oh my goodness, are you hurt ". Gabriella asked, turning me around and checking his body if there was any form of Injuries or scars.
"Gabriella am fine, you don't have worry so much, i wasn't hurt it anyway. Thankfully i was able to avoid the car before it could hit me, am safe now, please don't worry". I said trying to calm Gabriella down.
"How could i possibly not worry Jay, you're my husband and you almost died how exactly do you expect me to be okay after hearing such bad news". Gabriella protested with tears in her eyes.
"Its alright Gabriella, am so sorry for making you worry, and i promise that from now on, i will be more careful". I said using my handkerchief to wipe off the tears from her eyes and giving her a reassuring hug.
"Anyway, how's the preparation coming along". I asked trying to change the topic.
"Well, am almost done with the decorations for the house, my sister claudeth will be the one to handle the food, drinks and pastries that will be used for the party while i get Catherine ready before the guests arrived". Gabriella as her mood began to brightened up again.
"That's wonderful, it seems you already have everything under control if you need help with anything, just let me know and I'll be there to get the job done". I said offering my help.
"Alright dear". Gabriella replied. Just then, the door bell rang.
"Its still quite early, who could it be." I asked as it was still too early to be expecting any guest.
"Am not sure about it either". She went over to the door and opened it revealing her sister, Claudeth.
"Good morning sister". Claudeth greeted giving Gabriella a hug.
"its good to see you sister, its been awhile since you dropped by, I've really missed you". Gabriella noted as she continued removing the decoration materials from the box.
"I've missed you too, but you know that i don't like staying in a place where i don't feel safe". Claudeth hinted referring to my past criminal record.
"Claudeth, that's enough, you don't have to constantly remind Jay about his past Mistakes every single time you come here". Gabriella snapped, trying to defend me as i just stood there quietly without saying a word.
"But isn't it true Gabriella, ever since you got married to this man without our parents consent, you've become So distant from us all, you barely call or even drop by to check up on us and it's all because of this criminal you call Your husband, today is Catherine's birthday, their grand daughter and even still, they refuse to step their foot into this house, it isn't fair to them either". Claudeth stated angrily. But before Gabriella could say anything in my defense, i knew I have to say something before things get out of hand. Claudeth replied already boiling with anger.
"Gabriella, its fine, i will just go and check on Catherine". I spoke up, leaving the room to prevent any further arguments.
As i got to the door step of Catherine bedroom, i gave a little knock at the door before i entered into the room, she was seated on her bed playing with her toys.
"Happy birthday my lovely princess". I said giving Catherine a peck on both of her cheek before handing the gifts over to Catherine as she unwrapped the gifts.
"Oh my goodness, daddy you got me my favorite toy and the famous Des leches cake, thank you so much dad, you've made me so happy today". Catherine Jubilated, giving me a big hug.
"Anything for you my princess, you know daddy loves you so much even more than you can imagine". I expressed hugging her more tightly.
"i know that daddy and i love you so much too, and that's why i can't wait to grow up so that i can take good care of you and mommy, we will always be together forever". Catherine said with a big smile on her face.
"That's for certain, we will always be together no matter what happens. Anyways, its your birthday today so why aren't you getting ready yet". I observed, looking around the room to see her dress still inside the box.
"Well, mommy was supposed to get my clothes and also braid my hair for me,but she's not here right now". Catherine muttered looking a little bit disappointed.
"Well your mom is a little busy right now,but hey i can braid your hair for you instead if you want". I offered trying to brighten her mood.
"Are you sure about that daddy". Catherine asked.
"Of course, i mean after years of watching your mother braid your hair,i think am ready to do it too". I replied confidently.
"Well alright then". Catherine replied as she sat in front of her mirror. That was actually the first time i had ever braided a hair in my life, and i won't lie, it was really difficult it took hours before i could finally get the style right. When Gabriella was done with the decorations, she came up to get Catherine ready for the party cause guests had already started arriving, she was really surprised at the braid i had done for Catherine, she added a few finishing touches to the hair and got Catherine dressed for the party.
The party started, and Catherine was really having a lot of fun, she received a lot of gifts and well wishes from friends, family and loved one's. The highlight of the party was when Catherine was asked to cut the cake and the guests began to sing her a happy birthday song, she got really emotional and she began to cry. It was one of her most memorable birthdays.
After the party the guest had already left the house, Catherine began to unwrap her gifts, she was really happy at the so many gifts she had received. After a while, she left the room and came back again holding a painting in her hands. She handed it over to us, it was a painting of our family.
"Mommy, Daddy i just want to say thank you for always being there for me, taking care of me all this years and showering me with so much love, I am proud and really lucky to be your daughter and if i had another life time, I'd still choose you to be my parents. I love you both so much". Catherine said she held both of our hands on her palms and put them on each other and gave us both a tight bear hug".
"We love you too". Gabriella and i chorused. Just then, the door bell rang. I stood up to answer the door, but when i opened there was no one there, there was only a small package on the floor. I took it inside and closed the door. The package had the name Catherine written as the recipient .I gave the package to Catherine thinking it was just another birthday gift. She unwrapped the package, but what was inside was a toy gun and a short letter in it boldly written
"I'll be seeing you soon".
by
Uncle V.
I anxiously paced back and forth in my living room, clutching onto the letter with trembling hands. The crimson stain on the paper sent shivers down my spine, making me fear for the safety of my family. I knew i couldn't waste any time; We had to find a safer place to stay.
I immediately instructed my wife, Gabriella and our daughter, Catherine to pack their bags as I hurriedly packed some essentials into a bag. I didn't know who or what was after me even though I had a hunch, but i couldn't risk their lives any longer. The safety of my family was paramount.
As we rushed out of the house, i quickly glanced around, checking for any signs of danger. The dark and deserted street made me feel even more vulnerable. I couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched, hunted even. We needed to find a temporary refuge until they could figure out who wanted them dead and why.
With adrenaline coursing through my veins, i recalled an old family cabin situated deep in the nearby woods. It had been abandoned for years, but it seemed like the perfect hideout for now. Its isolation and seclusion could provide some level of safety against their pursuers.
We piled into our car, i gripped the steering wheel tightly as I drove through winding roads, my mind racing with thoughts of the unknown forces that threatened their lives. What had he gotten himself into? Who could possibly want me, or my family, dead?
The drive to the cabin felt never-ending, each minute stretching like elastic as my mind conjured up terrifying scenarios. The eerie silence inside the car was broken only by the occasional sound of twigs snapping under the tires. It felt as if the forest itself was aware of our arrival, whispering warnings through the rustling leaves.
I finally parked our car in front of the weathered cabin, its wooden exterior covered in overgrown vines. They hastily unloaded their belongings, stepping inside the cabin with caution. The musty scent of disuse filled the air, reminding them of the years this place had been abandoned.
The cabin was somewhat bare, but i spotted a few pieces of furniture that were still intact. We would have to make do with what we had. Safety was our priority now, not comfort.
With a heavy sigh, i locked the cabin door, hoping it would keep the outside world at bay. However, i couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that they were merely out of sight, not out of reach. I would need to uncover the truth behind the letter and the warning i had received to protect my family.
As night fell, i glanced at my sleeping daughter, her innocence reminding me of the urgency of their situation. Whoever was after them needed to be unmasked, their intentions laid bare.
