Chapter 1 The Sovereign's Vice

Damian's Pov

I didn't need to know her name. In the dark, names were just noise, and I preferred the suffocating silence of a pure, physical transaction.

The woman beneath me-a French runway model whose face was currently plastered across billboards in Times Square-let out a ragged, breathless gasp as my fingers dug into her hips. Her back arched off the crisp, Egyptian cotton sheets of my penthouse master bed, her long legs wrapping tightly around my waist, begging for a friction that would never satisfy the hollow ache inside me.

"Damian," she whimpered, her manicured nails clawing at the muscles of my back. "Please... mon chéri..."

I didn't kiss her. I never kissed them. A kiss required intimacy, an acknowledgement of the person breathing beneath you, and I didn't want a person. I wanted a drug. I wanted the raw, blinding heat of skin against skin, the heavy thud of my chest against hers, and the primal, rhythmic violence of an encounter that would temporarily drown out the screaming emptiness in my chest.

Suddenly, the heavy mahogany handle of my bedroom door rattled violently.

"Daddy?" a small, muffled voice called out from the hallway, followed by a persistent, aggressive pounding on the wood. "Daddy, open the door! I want to watch the movie with you! Daddy!"

Damn it.

A heavy wave of irritation crashed over me, instantly freezing the heat in my veins. Chantal froze beneath me, her eyes wide with sudden awkwardness.

"Is... is that your son again?" she whispered, trying to pull the silk sheets up to her chest.

"Ignore it," I growled, trying to recapture the numbing rhythm, but the pounding only grew louder, accompanied by a sharp, high-pitched whine.

"Daddy! I know you're in there! Open it!"

It was Damian Junior. DJ. My four-year-old shadow, and the absolute bane of my private life. Ever since his mother packed her bags and accepted a twenty-million-dollar wire transfer to vanish from our lives four years ago, DJ had developed a suffocating, hyper-attached obsession with me. He didn't want nannies. He didn't want toys. He wanted me. Even at just four years old, he trailed behind me like a ghost, invading my space so relentlessly that bringing a woman home had become an absolute logistical nightmare. He was always there, lurking in the corridors, knocking on doors, sabotaging every attempt I made to escape my own mind.

"Daddy!"

"Go back to your room, Damian!" I barked toward the door, my voice booming and dark.

The knocking stopped, replaced by a low, heartbroken sniffle that made a sharp spike of guilt twist violently in my gut. I hated the guilt even more than the interruption.

With a low curse, I pulled away from Chantal, entirely unbothered by her disappointed sigh.

I threw on a heavy black silk robe, tying it tightly around my waist as I strode to the door and yanked it open.

DJ was standing there, clutching a vintage silver pocket watch-the only piece of his mother he had left. His pitch-black hair was messy, and his gray eyes, identical to mine, blinked up at me with a mixture of desperate need and stubborn defiance. He looked past my shoulder, his small jaw clenching as he caught sight of Chantal's bare shoulder under the sheets. He hated them. He hated every single woman who took my attention away from him, and he made sure they knew it.

"Go to bed, DJ," I stated, my baritone clipped and cold. "I have a guest. I will check on you in the morning."

"You always say that," DJ muttered, his voice cracking. He didn't move. He stood his ground, a tiny barrier successfully ruining my escape. "She smells like cheap flowers. Tell her to leave."

From the bed, Chantal let out an outraged gasp.

"Damian, return to your room right now before I lose my patience," I growled, towering over him, my shadow engulfing his small frame.

He glared at me, his lower lip trembling, before turning on his heel and marching down the hallway, slamming his bedroom door behind him. The mood was entirely dead. The craving inside me was scratching at my throat, wild and unsatisfied, but the hollow numbness was gone, replaced by a bitter, suffocating hangover of irritation.

"Damian, darling..." Chantal purred, reaching out a manicured hand from the bed.

"Marcus will have a car waiting for you downstairs," I said, not even looking back at her as I walked toward my private bathroom. "He will wire the allowance to your account. Goodbye."

An hour later, I was driving through the pouring rain, the Maybach cutting through the dark Manhattan streets. I couldn't stay in that penthouse. DJ's suffocating attachment was driving me insane, and I needed to move. I needed a distraction.

My driver pulled up to the curb outside Vance Luxury, my flagship boutique on Fifth Avenue. The rain was torrential, hammering against the pavement. I stepped out, a bodyguard holding an umbrella over my head, intending to do a late-night walkthrough of the luxury inventory to clear my head.

But as I stepped toward the glass entrance, I froze.

A woman was standing outside the display window, completely drenched by the storm. She was holding a cheap, broken umbrella, but her eyes were entirely glued to the emerald-green silk gown on the mannequin.

The streetlights caught her face, and my breath stopped completely.

She was, without a doubt, the most exquisite creature I had ever laid eyes on. She had pale, porcelain skin, dark lashes thick with raindrops, and a face that belonged in a masterpiece. But it was her body that made a sudden, violent surge of raw, primal lust slam straight into my groin. She was wearing a cheap, faded coat, but it couldn't hide the spectacular, jaw-dropping geometry of her frame. She had a tiny, impossibly small waist that flared out into heavy, voluptuous, and breathtakingly curved hips. Her chest rose and fell heavily against the fabric of her wet shirt, her full, heavy breasts straining against the fabric.

I wanted her. I wanted her immediately. I wanted to tear that cheap coat off her, pin those lush, heavy curves against the glass window, and bury myself in her until the noise in my head completely vanished.

I pushed the heavy boutique door open, the warmth of the interior rushing out.

"Is there something you need?" I growled, my voice dropping into a dark, predatory rumble that cut through the sound of the rain.

She snapped her head toward me. Her wide, innocent eyes flared with pure, unadulterated panic as she recognised my imposing frame and the raw hunger flashing in my gaze. She looked terrified, like a beautiful deer cornered by a wolf.

She took a clumsy step backwards, her heel catching on the wet concrete. Her cheap umbrella clattered to the ground. Before I could reach out to trap her against the wall, she turned and bolted into the dark, rainy night.

I watched the hypnotic sway of her heavy hips as she ran, my heart pounding with a dangerous, electric heat I hadn't felt in years.

"Find out who she is," I ordered my head of security, my eyes still fixed on the empty corner where she had disappeared. "I don't care what it takes. Find her.

Chapter 2 The Edge of survival

Cecelia's Pov

Life didn't just hand you cards in New York City; it slammed them face-down on the concrete and dared you to pick them up.

I leaned over the small, stained sink in our cramped Astoria studio apartment, splashing cold water onto my face to shake the persistent, bone-deep fatigue that had become my permanent shadow. Looking up into the cracked mirror, I couldn't help but sigh. God had given me a face that looked like it belonged in a classic romance novel-porcelain skin, long dark lashes, and full, pouty lips. But down below, He had cursed me with a body that was impossible to hide. My waist was impossibly small, flaring out into heavy, voluptuous, and breathtakingly curved hips that stretched every pair of cheap jeans I owned past their breaking point. My full breasts strained against my threadbare shirts, drawing the kind of hungry, lingering stares from men on the subway that always made me want to shrink into the shadows.

But right now, my looks couldn't pay the bills.

Eighty thousand dollars.

The memory of the hospital administrator's cold voice from yesterday morning echoed in my ears. That was the price tag on my father's life-saving heart surgery. He was currently confined to a sterile bed in a public hospital ward in Queens, his heart failing more with every tick of the clock. My family had never known wealth; my father had worked himself to the bone as a construction labourer until his body broke, leaving me with a mountain of medical debt and a desperate, clawing need for a miracle.

"Cee! You're going to be late for your shift at the diner!"

The bedroom screen door slid open, and my best friend, Sarah, stepped into the small bathroom, aggressively applying a layer of fiery red lipstick. Sarah was the only reason I wasn't sleeping on a park bench. She had let me squat in her tiny, one-room apartment for the last six months, sharing her single bed and her meagre groceries while I scrambled for any under-the-table work I could find.

Sarah worked as a low-level data entry clerk at the monolithic Vance Conglomerate Headquarters in midtown. And like ninety per cent of the female population in Manhattan, she was utterly, hopelessly obsessed with her billionaire CEO, Damian Vance.

"I'm moving, I'm moving," I mumbled, tying my hair back into a tight, sensible bun.

"Oh my God, Cee, you won't believe what happened at the office yesterday," Sarah gushed, her eyes lighting up with a fanatical glow as she leaned against the doorframe. "I actually saw him. Damian Vance walked right past my cubicle section on his way to the private elevator. He is so devastatingly handsome it literally hurts to look at him. He moves like a panther in those ten-thousand-dollar custom suits."

I rolled my eyes gently, sliding into my faded wool coat. "Sarah, the man is a notorious womaniser. The tabloids show him with a different supermodel every single night."

"And I would gladly be one of them!" Sarah gasped, clutching her chest dramatically. "You don't understand, Cee. It is impossible to get anywhere near him. He has a wall of terrifying, black-suited bodyguards surrounding him at all times, and he's only ever seen with high-class, old-money socialites. But honestly? I dream about just having a one-night chance with him. Just one night in his bed would change my life forever. The parting gifts alone could pay off our back rent for a decade!"

I shook my head, a familiar pit of worry tightening in my stomach. Our landlord, Mr Henderson, had already slipped a final eviction notice under the door. We were two months behind, and the threat of the streets loomed over us like a guillotine.

"Just promise me you won't do anything stupid near his property," Sarah warned, her playful tone suddenly turning dead serious as she grabbed her purse. "I know you love looking at fashion, Cee, but I'm warning you: do not go near that luxury flagship window shop on Fifth Avenue. The one owned by Vance Retail. It's strictly for the wealthiest people on the planet. If security catches a girl from Queens in a faded coat lingering outside, they'll mistake you for a thief or a stray looking for trouble. Stay away from his world."

"I know, Sarah. I'm not stupid," I lied quietly, avoiding her eyes.

The truth was, I had already disobeyed her. My evening job was cleaning a small, independent bakery just two blocks down from the glittering facade of Vance Luxury. Every night, after scrubbing the flour off the counters and locking up the shop, I would walk past his flagship boutique. In a world full of decay, debt, and hospital monitors, that window display was my only escape.

Later that night, the sky completely broke open. The rain was torrential, a freezing downpour that hammered against the concrete as I finally turned the key to close the bakery doors. I was freezing, my cheap boots already soaked through, but as I walked toward the subway, a hypnotic pull drew my eyes across the street.

There it was. The Vance Luxury window, glowing like a warm oasis in the dark storm.

Behind the glass stood a mannequin wearing the most magnificent emerald-green silk gown I had ever seen. The fabric looked fluid, draping elegantly over a frame that, for once, actually matched my own heavy, voluptuous curves. I stepped closer to the glass, holding my cheap, broken five-dollar umbrella aloft, completely transfixed. For a beautiful, fleeting ten seconds, I forgot about the eighty-thousand-dollar surgery. I forgot about the eviction notice. I just stared, imagining what it would feel like to wear liquid jewel instead of a threadbare coat.

I decided to take one last, lingering glance at the beautiful dress before plunging into the subway station.

But my fantasy shattered instantly.

The heavy glass door of the boutique swung open, and a towering, imposing figure stepped out into the rain. It was him. Damian Vance. His broad shoulders cut through the dim streetlights, his jawline sharp and ruthless, his storm-gray eyes locking directly onto mine with a raw, predatory intensity that made my breath completely vanish.

Panic exploded in my chest. Sarah's warning flashed in my mind-they might mistake you for a thief.

Terrified of his suffocating presence and the dangerous hunger flashing in his gaze, I dropped my broken umbrella onto the wet concrete. Turning on my heel, I bolted blindly into the dark, rainy night, my heart pounding against my ribs, completely unaware that the wolf was already tracking my scent.

Chapter 3 The King's Vice

Damian's Pov

I couldn't go to bed without a body to consume. For me, sleep was impossible without the temporary, high-heat anaesthesia of a woman beneath me. It was a compulsive, carnal addiction-a ruthless avoidance mechanic to drown out the noise of my own mind. I needed the raw friction of skin against skin, the heavy thud of my chest against hers, and the absolute submission of whatever high-class socialite or runway model was occupying my bed that night.

I was known for my spectacular, calculated moves in bed. I knew exactly where to touch, how to prolong the agony of desire, and how to deliver an intense, consuming experience that left them completely ruined. Every single woman who ever shared my sheets spent the next morning praying for a second chance.

But they never got one. I had a strict, unbreakable rule: I never reused a woman. Once the night was over, the connection was severed. They were part of the past, and I moved on to a fresh face without a single afterthought.

Lately, however, my insatiable womanising lifestyle was being aggressively choked out by a four-year-old roadblock.

"Daddy!"

The persistent, high-pitched whining of my son, Damian Junior, echoed through the thick mahogany doors of my penthouse master bedroom, accompanied by a frantic, tiny fist pounding relentlessly on the wood.

God damn it.

Beneath me, a gorgeous blonde Italian heiress froze, her painted fingernails dug into my tensed shoulders, her lips parted in sudden, awkward frustration. The heat in my veins instantly turned to ice.

"Damian, darling," she whispered, her voice laced with disappointment. "Is your son... always like this?"

"Ignore it," I growled, trying to recapture the commanding rhythm, but the pounding only grew louder, accompanied by a sharp, heartbreaking whine.

"Daddy, open the door! I want to sleep with you, Daddy! Open it!"

DJ was the absolute bane of my private life. He was a four-year-old shadow, and he had developed a suffocating, hyper-attached obsession with me. He didn't want nannies. He didn't want toys. He wanted me. He trailed behind me like a ghost, invading my space so relentlessly that bringing a woman home had become an absolute logistical nightmare. He was always lurking in the corridors, knocking on doors, and crying at the worst possible moments, completely sabotaging my escapes.

With a dark curse, I pulled away from the heiress, throwing on a heavy black silk robe as I strode to the door and yanked it open. DJ stood there, small and tear-stained. He glared past my shoulder, his little jaw clenching as he caught sight of the woman under my sheets. He hated them. He hated every woman who took my attention away from him, and he made sure they knew it.

"Go back to your room, Damian," I barked, my baritone deep and cold. "I am busy. I will check on you in the morning."

"No!" DJ yelled, his voice cracking with stubborn defiance. "Tell her to leave! She's in my spot!"

The mood was entirely dead. Defeated and furious, I sighed. This was the third time this week he had ruined my release, making it impossible to bring anyone home casually without a full-blown tantrum.

I walked over to my desk and buzzed Marcus.

Marcus wasn't just my executive assistant; he was my best friend and the only man in Manhattan who shared my exact, lustful, and unapologetic lifestyle. We ruled the city's nightlife like sovereigns, but while I handled the global corporate empire, Marcus was explicitly in charge of my nocturnal supplies. He possessed a golden Rolodex of the world's most elite, beautiful, and exclusive women. Every single evening, it was Marcus's job to select the absolute best of them and have her delivered to my penthouse like an expensive bottle of scotch.

"Marcus," I growled into the receiver. "Get a car for the heiress. And look into buying me a private, second penthouse downtown. A secure bachelor pad. I can't keep doing this under the same roof as my son."

"On it, boss," Marcus replied smoothly, entirely unfazed. He knew the drill.

By the next evening, Marcus had delivered flawlessly. He secured a breathtaking, ultra-modern penthouse downtown-completely hidden, private, and miles away from DJ's watchful eyes. I thought I had finally beaten the system. I thought I had successfully bought my freedom and escaped my four-year-old shadow.

But I had severely underestimated the terrifying bond between us.

The very first night I tried to use the downtown penthouse, Marcus had a stunning French lingerie model waiting for me. The tension in the room was high, the spice immediate. I pinned her against the glass window overlooking the city, my hands tracing her skin, finally ready to lose myself in the numbing release I craved.

Right as I was about to cross the line, my encrypted personal phone exploded on the nightstand.

It was the head nanny from the main estate, her voice hyperventilating with panic. "Mr Vance! You need to come back immediately! Damian Junior has suddenly collapsed with a dangerously high fever. He's shaking, vomiting, and screaming for you. The private doctors are on their way, but he's rejecting everyone!"

My blood ran cold. The lust evaporated from my veins in an instant. As much as DJ's attachment frustrated my lifestyle, I loved my son fiercely. He was my blood, my anchor, and the only thing in this world I truly cared about protecting.

I threw my clothes on, leaving the model bewildered and furious in the downtown penthouse, and raced across the city like a madman. The moment I burst into his nursery, DJ was burning up, his small face flushed as he sobbed, wrapping his tiny arms around my neck the second I lifted him. The doctors confirmed it was a severe, stress-induced psychosomatic spike-his little body literally made itself violently ill the moment he sensed I had left the building to be with another woman.

It happened again the next time. And the time after that. It was an uncanny, terrifying pattern. Anytime I tried to lay with a woman in the other penthouse, DJ would suddenly get violently sick, forcing me to abandon my vice and sprint back to his bedside. He was tracking me emotionally, holding my carnal desires hostage with his own health. I was completely trapped, starved of my relief, and drowning in a volatile cocktail of sexual frustration and exhaustion.

And through all of this, the girl from the rain never left my mind.

Ever since I saw her outside my boutique, I was completely obsessed. Her face, her innocent panic, and the jaw-dropping, heavy geometry of her voluptuous curves had burned themselves into my subconscious. Even when Marcus sent the most elite women to my downtown pad before DJ's inevitable alerts, it wasn't their faces I was visualising. It was the girl from the rain. Cee. My head of security had finally cracked her identity this morning: Cecelia Hensley, a penniless girl from Queens.

I stared out the window of my study, swirling the amber liquid in my crystal glass, waiting for Marcus to bring me the full surveillance report on her daily routine. I was a man who ruled an international conglomerate with an iron fist, yet my entire life was currently paralysed by a four-year-old child and a ghost of a girl I hadn't even touched yet.

The heavy doors of my study opened, and Marcus stepped in. His face wasn't his usual calm, professional mask. He looked hesitant, holding a tablet tight against his chest.

"Do you have her location?" I demanded, my voice dropping into a dark, impatient rumble.

"I do, boss," Marcus said, clearing his throat nervously. He slid the tablet across my heavy mahogany desk. "My surveillance team tracked her back to Queens. But... we ran into an issue. It seems you aren't the only man in her orbit."

I snapped my gaze down to the screen. It was a high-resolution surveillance photo taken just an hour ago outside a rundown diner in Astoria.

My blood instantly turned to pure, roaring fire.

Cee was standing on the sidewalk, her jaw-dropping, heavy curves fully on display even in a cheap jacket. She was smiling-a genuine, warm, beautiful smile that she had never shown me. And she was smiling at a random guy standing right in front of her. He had his hand wrapped gently around her wrist, leaning in close, and she wasn't pulling away. She looked completely relaxed, entirely comfortable with his proximity. He was looking at her like she was his world, and she was letting him.

The sheer sight of another man touching what I had already claimed in my mind-seeing her give her warmth to someone else while I sat here starved, frustrated, and drowning-sent a violent, animalistic wave of fury tearing through my veins.

With a brutal roar, I threw my crystal glass against the wall, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards.

"Who the hell is he?" I snarled, slamming both hands onto the desk, my gray eyes darkening to a lethal, predatory shade of storm that made Marcus instinctively take a step back.

"Our intelligence says his name is Liam, boss," Marcus answered quickly, tracking my unhinged reaction. "He's not a threat. Just a close childhood friend. He's been helping her out with little things around the neighborhood, checking on her dad, helping with groceries-"

"I don't care if he's her brother," I growled, my chest heaving with an unhinged, possessive rage. The forced celibacy, the sexual frustration, and the complete obsession with this girl exploded all at once. If I couldn't sleep with any other woman in this city, then no other man was allowed to be near her. "Deploy the entire security detail. I want eyes on her twenty-four hours a day."

I leaned over the desk, my voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural whisper that dripped with dangerous intent. "She ran from me once, but she belongs to me now. I will buy her apartment, I will eliminate her debts, and I will tear apart anyone who dares to make her smile like that again. I will get her into my bed and under my roof... no matter the cost."
