Chapter 4

That reply left Cecily shocked like a thunderclap.

Cecily's last attachment was completely gone.

She called her mother, Ellen Warren. "Mom, cancel my wedding."

Ellen was silent for a long moment on the other end of the line. "We can cancel it. But we need to give the Lambert family an explanation."

"Let's talk about it at the next family gathering." Cecily hastily hung up.

The art exhibition kept her busy late into the night.

Just then, a notification popped up from a friend's post.

Her friend "Emily" had just updated with a post.

It was a wedding photo.

The caption read, "Although his identity can't be revealed for now, our happiness will quietly continue."

In the photo, Emily was smiling sweetly in her white wedding dress.

The groom was opposite her. Though his face was carefully blurred, Cecily knew unmistakably that it was Chris.

He was even wearing the limited edition watch Cecily had given him for their anniversary.

Cecily clicked on Emily's profile.

"I made pottery with him today. He is so talented."

"He doesn't like shopping, but he spent the entire afternoon with me."

"He waited in line for hours just for this taste. He said he'd accompany me here next time, too."

"First day apart, and I miss you."

Cecily scrolled back to two years ago.

"I confessed my feelings for him for the first time. He told me he had feelings for me, too. We're dating now."

Cecily noticed the date.

Chris proposed to her on the very day.

While she was basking in happiness, her relationship with Chris had already quietly changed. He dated Emily at the same time.

Cecily took a deep breath.

She didn't cry. Nor did she feel pain.

She only had a numb clarity.

She blocked all of Chris's contacts and cut all bonds between them.

...

On the day of her art exhibition, many media outlets were present.

Cecily was explaining her creative concepts to the cameras when a loud rumbling sound filled the air suddenly.

A helicopter delivered a huge gift box.

As Cecily stood in shock, the box was suddenly open.

Chris, dressed in a suit and holding a large bouquet, stepped out with a smile.

Under the focus of numerous cameras and eyes, he said loudly, "My love, I wish you a successful exhibition."

Cecily was overwhelmed by the surprise and joy. She didn't know how to react.

A figure broke through the crowd. "Urgh! A murderer's daughter! How dare you show off in public?"

A bucket of red paint was poured over Cecily's head.

She was covered with red paint instantly.

She was startled and couldn't open her eyes due to the sticky paint.

Immediately after, two loud explosions sounded outside the gallery.

The scene descended into chaos instantly.

Cecily was jostled back and forth by the crowd and nearly fell to the ground.

Instinctively, she reached out to grab Chris beside her, but she got nothing.

In the end, she didn't even know who led her away from the scene.

In the hospital, Cecily was still in shock.

She felt the overwhelming smell of paint clinging to her.

Although the criminal had been arrested, she kept thinking of the scene.

At the moment the paint was thrown over her, Chris saw it all clearly.

He dropped the bouquet, pushed through the crowd, and rushed to the other side without hesitation.

He did the same thing as before when Cecily was in trouble.

But he protected Emily this time.

Cecily found it absurd.

If he loved Emily so much, why did he put on a show of loving Cecily?

She wouldn't pester him.

Chris finally came to see her late at night.

Cecily wrapped the blanket tighter around herself when she saw him. "What are you doing here now?"

Chris explained, "I'm sorry. It happened so suddenly. I didn't mean to leave you. Emily was there too, and I was worried she'd be in danger alone."

Cecily interrupted him. "Don't explain. I saw everything. If you love Emily so much, why do you come to me? Chris, isn't it disgusting for you to have relationships with two women at the same time?"

But Chris said angrily, "I take care of her because of you. I'm making up for what your family has done to her."
