The morning air in the Castellano International office felt heavier than usual.
Sofia couldn't tell if it was just her, or if the entire floor sensed the tension that had been brewing since yesterday.
The muted hum of printers and the faint aroma of espresso did little to disguise the undercurrent swirling in the air. Conversations were clipped, laughter was hollow, and more than one curious glance slid toward her from behind computer screens.
She was at her desk early, sorting through contracts for the Henderson deal, when she caught sight of Jessica across the hall.
Jessica's head tilted slightly as she spoke to another executive assistant, her lipstick-red smile the picture of charm but her eyes, sharp and assessing, flicked toward Sofia for just a second too long.
Sofia kept her gaze on the files in front of her, silently counting the seconds until Jessica looked away. She wasn't going to give her the satisfaction of knowing she noticed.
An hour later, Sofia left her desk to deliver the Henderson contracts to Leonardo's office. The polished floor reflected the sharp line of her pencil skirt and the black heels she'd reluctantly borrowed from Marta's niece. Her focus was on the stack of documents balanced in her hands until she heard the sound of those unmistakable stilettos clicking up behind her.
"Still here, I see," Jessica's voice purred, the kind of sweetness that cut like glass.
Sofia didn't break stride. "I have work to do."
"Oh, I'm sure you do." Jessica's tone shifted, a faint curl of amusement lacing her words. "Funny thing... the last three 'temporary' secretaries Leonardo's had didn't last more than two weeks. I'm wondering what makes you different."
Sofia stopped, turning just enough to meet her gaze. "Maybe I just do my job."
Jessica stepped closer, her designer perfume wrapping around them like a cloud. "Or maybe you've found... other ways to keep his attention."
The insinuation burned hotter than Sofia expected. Her grip tightened on the files until the edges bit into her palms. "That's not your business."
Jessica's smile widened, cold and victorious. "It becomes my business when you start thinking you belong in a world you don't. Trust me, sweetheart... I've known Leonardo a lot longer than you. And men like him
"Men like me what?"
The voice came from behind them, deep, calm, and cutting through the tension like a blade.
Jessica froze mid-sentence.
Sofia turned and saw Leonardo standing in the doorway to his office, hands in his pockets, watching them with an unreadable expression.
Jessica recovered quickly, schooling her features into practiced innocence. "Leonardo. We were just
"I heard enough," he said, his voice level but carrying an edge. His gaze flicked to Sofia for a fraction of a second before settling back on Jessica. "I don't recall your position including... monitoring my staff."
Jessica's jaw tightened. I was only trying to protect
"My business," he cut in, the temperature in his tone dropping, "isn't in need of your protection. Especially from my own employees."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Jessica's lips pressed into a thin line. "Understood." She turned on her heel, heels clicking away faster than before.
Sofia exhaled slowly, the sound loud in the quiet hallway. She hadn't realized how tightly she'd been holding her breath.
Leonardo stepped forward, taking the stack of files from her without asking.
When his eyes met hers, they were darker than usual serious, but not angry.
"You don't have to let people like that get to you," he said, softer now.
"I don't," she replied, but the heat in her chest told her otherwise.
His gaze lingered on her for a moment longer, unreadable, before he said, "Come in. We have work to do."
Inside his office, she settled into the chair opposite his desk, still aware of her pulse racing from the encounter. She tried to focus on the contracts, but her mind kept replaying the way he'd stepped in without hesitation, the way his voice had cut through Jessica's venom like it was nothing.
For someone who supposedly kept his distance, Leonardo Castellano had just drawn a very clear line in the sand.
She didn't know why that mattered so much... but it did.
Sofia was so caught up in her thoughts she almost missed it when Leonardo leaned back in his chair, glancing at the clock.
"We're going to be here late tonight," he said. "The Henderson deal needs revisions before the morning."
Her head snapped up. "Late? How late?"
His lips curved slightly. "Late enough that you might want to order dinner. I don't send people home until the work is done."
The look in his eyes made her heartbeat quicken for reasons that had nothing to do with overtime.
Late tonight. Alone in his office. Just the two of them.
And for the first time since stepping into his world, Sofia wondered if she was prepared for what that might mean...
