Chapter 4 A Taste of Something Real

Rose awoke to the soft scent of pine and freshly brewed coffee drifting through the cracks of the cabin walls. Sunlight painted golden lines across the wooden floors, and the crisp mountain air lingered with a peaceful chill. For a moment, she didn't move-just lay there, listening to the silence. No horns blaring, no city chaos. Just the rustling of trees and a new kind of calm.

She slipped on a sweater and made her way toward the kitchen, where she found Adrien barefoot, sleeves rolled up, flipping pancakes on a cast iron skillet.

"You cook?" she asked, amused.

He turned, eyebrows raised. "Surprised?"

"Impressed," she corrected, crossing her arms as she leaned against the doorway. "Let me guess-you picked this up during your years of pretending to be a normal person?"

Adrien laughed, his smile wide and relaxed in a way she hadn't seen before. "Something like that. My grandfather used to say that a man who can't make his own breakfast doesn't deserve one."

"Smart man," she said, watching him move around the small kitchen with unexpected ease.

"Sit," he offered, gesturing toward the tiny wooden table beside the window. "You'll love this."

She did. The pancakes were fluffy and warm, the syrup infused with something sweet and earthy she couldn't place.

"You've been hiding this side of you," she murmured between bites.

Adrien leaned back in his chair, coffee mug cradled in his hands. "That's the thing about building walls, Rose. Sometimes you forget what's behind them."

She paused, fork halfway to her mouth. "You think I've built walls?"

He met her gaze without flinching. "Haven't you?"

It wasn't accusatory. Just honest. That kind of honesty stung.

"I have," she admitted softly. "And every time I've tried to let someone in, they gave me a reason to regret it."

"I'm not them," he said, voice low.

"No," she agreed, "but that doesn't mean you won't become them."

Silence hung between them for a moment. Adrien reached across the table, his fingers brushing over hers. "You don't have to trust me all at once. Just... trust me enough to stay. To see what this could be."

Rose looked down at their joined hands and whispered, "That's the scariest thing you've said yet."

They spent the rest of the day exploring the land around the cabin. The trees whispered secrets as the wind passed through them, and the river sparkled like glass beneath the afternoon sun. Adrien showed her where he used to fish as a boy, the old treehouse he helped his grandfather build, and the rock he used to lie on when he wanted to feel small under the vast sky.

It was the most human she had ever seen him-bare of the polished billionaire persona, stripped of the titles and expectations. Just a man with childhood stories and memories that made him laugh like he didn't carry an empire on his shoulders.

As dusk approached, they returned to the cabin, muddy, tired, and full of a strange, quiet joy. Adrien lit a fire while Rose changed into one of his oversized flannels, and they settled on the couch with glasses of red wine.

She tucked her legs beneath her and looked at him in the flickering light. "Why me?"

He glanced at her, confused. "What do you mean?"

"You could have anyone. Models, actresses, women who move in your world. Why choose me?"

Adrien set his glass down and leaned in. "Because you make me feel like I can exhale. Like I don't have to perform. You see things, Rose. Not just people-truths. And when you look at me, I don't feel like a commodity."

She swallowed hard, emotion pressing at the edges of her voice. "You terrify me."

He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Good. That means this is real."

Then, slowly, he leaned in and kissed her-not with the hunger of a man used to getting what he wanted, but with the reverence of someone who had waited a long time to feel something true.

The kiss deepened, their bodies drawn to each other like magnets rediscovering purpose. Rose melted into him, her heart thudding wildly against her ribs, every fear and wall screaming in protest-but every part of her soul surrendering.

When they finally broke apart, breathless and flushed, she whispered against his lips, "What are we doing, Adrien?"

His hand cupped her cheek, thumb brushing her skin like she might disappear. "Something I never thought I'd have again-falling."

She rested her forehead against his. "Promise me one thing."

"Anything."

"That if this ends... you'll let me walk away whole."

His chest rose and fell with the weight of her words. "It won't end. Not if I have any say in it."

And in that quiet cabin, beneath a blanket of stars and the crackle of firelight, two broken hearts began stitching themselves together-threaded not with perfect words, but with the promise of something honest.

Something real.
