Chapter 5 The Knife from Behind

The name on the paper burned like acid in Severin's hands.

Professor Eldric.

Mentor. Teacher. Friend.

The man who shaped him behind bars. The man whose lessons turned a shattered prisoner into a cold, calculating strategist. A father figure when Severin had no one.

And now - the man who might have been feeding his enemy the whole time.

Severin didn't speak for a full minute.

Knox stood by, arms folded, watching carefully.

"I don't believe it," Severin said finally, voice low.

"I didn't want to believe it either," Knox replied. "But this code? It's his. He signed it with the same cipher he taught you."

"Maybe someone else used it."

"Maybe. But there's more. Payment logs. Offshore accounts. They all link back to him. Small deposits, quiet trails, and every one leads to Ross Holdings."

Severin clenched his jaw. "Where is he now?"

Knox's voice was steel. "Same bookstore. Lower East Side."

Severin turned, grabbing his coat.

"You're going now?"

Severin didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The Final Lesson

The bell above the bookstore door jingled as Severin stepped in.

Dust lingered in the shafts of light from the back windows. Books lined every wall. It smelled like old wood, ink, and betrayal.

Professor Eldric looked up from behind the counter, wearing his usual worn cardigan, spectacles perched on his nose.

"Severin," he said warmly, as if nothing had changed.

Severin didn't smile. "I know what you did."

Eldric's eyes flicked with something - guilt? Resignation?

"I was wondering when you'd find out."

"So it's true."

"Yes."

The word landed like a hammer.

"Why?" Severin demanded. "You were my mentor. You taught me everything. You gave me the tools to fight. And all this time you were feeding the people who destroyed my life?"

Eldric took a long breath. "I never meant to hurt you."

"Then what did you mean to do? Enlighten me."

The older man stood and walked around the counter slowly, like every movement took effort.

"When I met you, you were broken. You had fire but no direction. I gave you that. I gave you purpose. And yes - I worked with Veronique. I still do."

Severin stepped forward. "Why?"

Eldric looked him dead in the eyes.

"Because she saved my life, just like I saved yours."

The Origins of Loyalty

The past came pouring out.

Twenty years earlier, Eldric had been a whistleblower. A financial analyst who uncovered one of the largest money-laundering operations in U.S. history - one that implicated members of Veronique Ross's enemies.

Before he could testify, he was framed and thrown in prison.

Veronique, back then just a rising power in global finance, orchestrated his survival behind bars - keeping him alive when others wanted him silenced.

"In exchange," Eldric said, "I agreed to be her eyes and ears in the underworld. I owe her everything."

"So what was I?" Severin asked bitterly. "Just another piece on her board?"

Eldric's voice dropped. "You were the only one I ever cared about."

"Then you should've warned me."

"I tried. You weren't ready to hear it."

Severin stared at him. "I trusted you."

Eldric reached into his pocket slowly and pulled out a flash drive.

"This is everything I've ever sent her. Every report. Every detail. Some of it... can help you now. Use it."

Severin hesitated.

"I'm not asking for forgiveness," Eldric said. "I just don't want to die with more blood on my hands."

Severin took the drive and walked out without another word.

Veronique's Gambit

Half a world away, in a conference room that looked more like a throne room, Veronique Ross reviewed new intelligence.

A digital assistant read aloud from a secure file.

"Severin Lockhart has made contact with Eldric. Data transfer confirmed. However, Eldric has not been eliminated."

Veronique's lips pursed.

"That man always had a soft spot."

She closed the file.

"Prepare the media attack. Leak the footage of Lockhart with the ex-con informant. Spin it as proof that he's running a criminal front beneath WynnLock Holdings."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Oh, and," she added. "Tell Damian to make his next move."

The Storm Breaks

The next morning, every news outlet was plastered with a headline:

"EX-CON CEO TIED TO SHADOW NETWORK - WynnLock Scandal Explodes!"

Reporters camped outside the company. Stocks began to slip. Investors pulled out. Lawyers called. The board panicked.

Celeste, still weak from her injury, showed up at headquarters in a wheelchair, flanked by bodyguards.

Severin paced the boardroom like a caged beast.

"They're bleeding us dry," he growled.

Celeste held his hand under the table. "We'll get through this."

Knox entered the room holding a USB.

"I decrypted the files from Eldric's drive. You're going to want to see this."

He plugged it into the screen.

A folder popped open.

Project Bastion: Emergency Directive

Inside - a detailed plan authored by Veronique Ross herself.

A full hostile takeover of WynnLock Holdings.

Funded by offshore subsidiaries. Slated to trigger within seven days.

Step by step: financial sabotage, media manipulation, board infiltration, legal entrapment.

A slow execution.

Unless Severin stopped it now.

The Infiltration

Knox laid out the plan.

"We need to hit them before they strike. Get into Ross Holdings HQ. Pull the raw contracts. Their legal framework for the takeover. If we expose it, we bury them."

"It's a fortress," Celeste said. "We'd need inside access."

Severin turned to her. "Do we still have any eyes in their company?"

Celeste hesitated. "One. My old intern. She's scared. But loyal."

Severin nodded. "Set it up. We go in tomorrow."

Father and Daughter

That night, Severin found Liora curled up on the couch, hugging a stuffed lion.

"Daddy?" she said sleepily. "Are the bad people gone yet?"

He knelt beside her.

"Not yet. But they will be."

"Will you stop fighting when they're gone?"

He smiled faintly. "Why?"

"Because then we can go to the zoo. And the park. And eat cotton candy."

His heart broke a little at the innocence in her voice.

"Yeah," he said, hugging her tight. "We'll do all that. I promise."

The Ross Tower Raid

Ross Holdings headquarters was a towering glass monolith with facial recognition, thermal sensors, and biometric locks.

Severin, Knox, and the intern - Talia - moved like ghosts.

Dressed as maintenance staff, they rode the service elevator up to the 47th floor.

"Server room's here," Talia whispered. "Guard change in six minutes."

Knox hacked the door. They slipped in.

Rows of servers hummed like sleeping dragons.

They worked fast.

Within three minutes, Knox extracted the legal framework for the takeover.

Then-

An alarm blared.

"Shit!" Talia gasped.

"Go!" Severin barked.

They ran.

Security flooded the hallways.

Knox pulled out smoke bombs. The hallway vanished in clouds of white.

They barely made it back to the van.

Knox slammed the door shut and roared away.

"We got it," he said. "Now we end this."

The Beginning of the End

The next morning, Severin and Celeste called a press conference.

Live broadcast. Full transparency.

Severin stood in front of the world and revealed everything - the infiltration, the contracts, the staged media attacks.

Then he did something unexpected.

He exposed Eldric's betrayal.

"I was mentored by a man who betrayed me. But instead of revenge, I offer forgiveness. Because truth matters more than pride."

The audience was stunned.

The tide turned.

For the first time... the world believed him.

Veronique's Fury

In Monaco, Veronique smashed a wine glass against the wall.

"Execute final protocol," she hissed. "If I can't ruin his name..."

She turned to her assistant.

"...I'll take his heart."

That night, Severin returned home, exhausted.

Liora was asleep. Celeste kissed him softly, her recovery nearly complete.

Peace. For the first time in weeks.

Until his phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

No words.

Just a live video stream.

Liora's bedroom.

Empty.

The window open.

And on the bed, a single white rose.

The screen went black.
