Chapter 2 Blood Ties and Breaking Points

The world blurred as Severin's fists slammed against the walls of Celeste's apartment, fury thundering through every vein.

Liora was gone.

His daughter-his little girl, whom he had only just met, who had called him "dad" with a smile too bright for a broken man-was taken.

By him.

By the same man who had stolen his past.

Now, Damian was coming for his future.

"Where is she?!" Severin roared, gripping the crumpled note so tightly it tore at the edges.

Celeste stood frozen, her arms wrapped around herself, eyes wide and wet. Her voice cracked. "I-I don't know. I just put her to bed. She was-she was safe."

Severin's breath heaved. He wasn't blaming her. Not really. But rage had to go somewhere.

He turned to the window. The curtains fluttered gently in the breeze. On the sill-scratches. A smudge of black boot polish.

"Who has access to the building?" he asked sharply.

"No one. Just me. The doorman. Liora's nanny, but she-she left an hour ago."

"Security cams?"

Celeste nodded quickly and rushed to her laptop. Within seconds, she pulled up the feed.

Severin leaned over her shoulder. On-screen, the hallway outside the apartment flickered into view.

At 11:52 p.m., a tall figure in a maintenance uniform entered the hall.

Face obscured by a cap.

The man never looked at the camera. He inserted a key, entered the apartment, and minutes later exited-carrying something wrapped in a blanket.

Severin's knuckles turned white.

"That's her," he said coldly.

"And that's not just someone."

"It's Damian," Celeste whispered.

The Scar Beneath the Surface

Damian Ross was a snake. A polished, powerful, merciless snake.

To the public, he was the golden boy billionaire. Philanthropist. Investor. Visionary.

To Severin... he was the devil who orchestrated his downfall.

Damian had been a silent partner in Lockhart Innovations. A shadow who struck when Severin was at his most vulnerable-right after his parents' death. One fake ledger, one forged email, and one rigged trial later-Severin was buried alive in a cell.

And now, the same man had stolen his child.

Celeste trembled beside him. "He always suspected. That Liora wasn't his."

Severin's head snapped to her.

"What?"

Her eyes were glassy with regret. "I panicked. After your arrest. I didn't know where to go. What to do. I was already pregnant, and... and Damian offered help. Shelter. Silence."

"You lived with him?" Severin's voice was hoarse.

"Only for a while. Until I built myself back up. I never let him near her. I told him she wasn't his. But I think deep down, he always knew."

Severin turned away, biting down on his fury.

This wasn't the time for judgment. Right now, there was only one mission.

Get Liora back.

Alive.

The Hunt Begins

They called the police.

Protocol demanded it.

But Severin knew better than to rely on bureaucracy. The law had failed him once. It wouldn't save his daughter now.

He needed someone faster.

More ruthless.

He made a call.

A number etched in his memory from prison. A man who owed him a life debt.

The voice on the other end answered with a groggy growl. "Who the hell-"

"It's Lockhart. I need you."

A pause. Then, "Where?"

"City Center. Celeste Wynn's apartment. My daughter's been taken."

"I'll be there in fifteen."

Click.

Celeste frowned. "Who was that?"

"A friend."

Enter Knox

Severin stood at the curb, waiting. At exactly fourteen minutes past the call, a black Dodge Charger pulled up.

Out stepped a man built like a brick wall. Tattoos climbed up his neck, and a jagged scar ran across his brow.

Knox Vale.

Ex-con. Former military. Hacker. Tracker. And, once upon a time, Severin's cellmate.

"Damn, man," Knox muttered, pulling Severin into a hug. "Didn't think I'd see you again this side of hell."

"Wish this was a reunion," Severin said.

"Let me guess. Some rich prick took your kid?"

Severin just handed him the note.

Knox read it, eyes darkening. "We're gonna burn this guy."

Unholy Deals

Knox set up a mobile workstation in Celeste's kitchen. Within minutes, he'd hacked into the apartment's building security, traffic cameras, and known aliases tied to Damian Ross.

"Okay," he muttered. "Your girl was taken eastbound, into the industrial zone. No traffic cameras past 110th. Dead spot."

Severin paced.

"Then that's where we go."

Knox paused. "It's not just about showing up, man. This guy knows your moves before you make them."

Severin turned, voice sharp. "He doesn't know me anymore."

Celeste grabbed Severin's arm. "You can't just charge in there!"

He pulled away gently. "I won't let him take her. Not without blood."

The Warehouse

By 4 a.m., Severin and Knox arrived at the edge of the industrial district. Fog coiled over rusted metal fences. Abandoned factories loomed like silent skeletons.

Severin knew this was a trap.

But traps could be turned.

Knox pulled up the GPS again. "This one. Abandoned textile mill. Last heat signal. Ten minutes ago."

They moved in silence.

Inside, the air smelled of oil and rot.

Then-movement.

A soft sound. A child's sob.

Severin's heart seized. He followed the sound through the metal halls.

And there she was.

Liora.

Alone. Wrapped in a blanket on the floor. Shivering.

"Daddy?" she whimpered.

"I'm here," he whispered, dropping to his knees and pulling her into his arms.

"I was scared."

"I know, baby. I'm here now. I'll never let anyone take you again."

He scooped her up.

That's when the lights flicked on.

The doors slammed shut.

And the voice echoed across the building.

"Well, well. Daddy came home."

Face of the Enemy

Damian stepped out from the shadows, slow clap echoing off the steel.

Wearing an expensive suit, hair slicked back, his smile was venomous.

"Such a touching scene," he said.

Severin turned, placing Liora behind him. "Let her go."

"Oh, I already did," Damian said. "You think I'd hurt a child?"

He chuckled. "Please. I'm not a monster."

"Then what is this?"

Damian shrugged. "A message. You came back. Started sniffing around. I figured I'd remind you-you're not welcome in my world."

"This isn't your world anymore."

Damian's smile slipped. "Is that so?"

Knox entered behind Severin, gun drawn. "You got five seconds to step back."

Damian's men stepped forward-two armed thugs from the shadows.

Standoff.

Then-chaos.

Gunfire erupted.

Severin grabbed Liora and bolted for cover.

Knox tackled one of the men, disarming him in seconds.

Severin ducked behind a steel beam, shielding Liora as bullets ricocheted.

"You okay?" he whispered.

Liora nodded, clinging to his shirt.

Escape and Threats

In the end, Knox neutralized both thugs.

Damian fled into the night like the rat he was.

Police sirens wailed in the distance-Celeste had called them once Severin left.

Severin carried Liora into Celeste's arms as the cops stormed the scene.

Paramedics checked Liora. She was shaken but unharmed.

The cops tried questioning Severin.

He stonewalled.

"Talk to my lawyer," he said flatly.

Back at the apartment, Celeste wrapped Liora in warm clothes and kissed her forehead over and over again.

Then she turned to Severin.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"For what?"

"For not telling you sooner. For everything."

Severin looked at his daughter.

Then at the woman he once knew.

And all he said was, "We protect her now. Together."

New War, New Rules

The next day, the media exploded.

Headlines:

"Ex-Con Lockhart Linked to Wynn Enterprise Heiress?"

"Daughter of Billionaire CEO Found After Kidnapping"

"Damian Ross Accused of Abduction?"

Celeste's PR team scrambled, but the fire had already caught.

And Damian?

He called Severin.

A private number. One ring.

"You've made your point," Severin answered, voice flat.

Damian's voice was calm. Too calm. "You took my seat. My spotlight. My woman. And now you want my legacy?"

"She was never yours. Neither was she," Severin replied.

Damian chuckled coldly.

"We'll see how long you last this time, Lockhart."

That night, Severin sat with Liora, reading a book by lamplight. Her head rested on his arm.

She looked up and whispered, "You won't leave again, right?"

His throat tightened. "Never."

She smiled sleepily and drifted off.

Outside the apartment building, in a nearby parked car, Damian watched through binoculars.

Beside him sat a man with cold eyes and a face covered in burn scars.

"I want everything," Damian said softly. "Dig up every weakness. Every person he ever loved. If we can't bury Lockhart with the truth, we'll do it with his past."

The man nodded once.

"Consider it done.
