Chapter 3 Three

Terms and conditions

Sharp and emotionless, the contract lay on the table, its pristine pages immaculate, written in bold black ink against the stark white paper. It was a stark representation of the power dynamics at play, a cold document that held the promise of salvation or the threat of ruin. Each word was meticulously crafted, devoid of warmth, yet brimming with implications that weighed heavily in the air. For Sophia, the difference between a path to safety and the precipice of disaster hinged on just a few signatures. The thought sent a shiver down her spine. Her heart raced as she traced the lines where her name would go, each signature a pivotal moment that could alter the course of her life forever. This contract was not merely ink on paper; it represented the culmination of her hopes and fears, the potential for liberation or entrapment. As she sat there, the atmosphere felt thick with tension. The stakes were impossibly high, and she could almost hear the ticking of time as it crept closer to a decision that would define her future. With each passing second, the weight of the choice loomed larger, and she found herself grappling with the enormity of what lay ahead. Just as he did in every boardroom, Adrian kept a close eye on her. As composed as ever he stated It's all standard. "We tie the knot. We pretend to be married. And we leave without any problems after a year. " When Sophia saw the contract her eyes remained fixed. "And what happens if one of us violates the rules?" Adrian laughed dryly and said, " You mean if we both fall in love with each other? That's not going to happen. However, there is a non-contest clause in that scenario. You'll forfeit all of your rights to the assistance I offer. The Bennett partnership will no longer be under my control." "Convenient." She reclined in the leather seat. "No intimacy. No affection." "Exactly. This is a strategic alliance, not a romance," he stated. Lifting the first page, Sophia scanned it once more. Her father's name was brought up in particular. Adrian's commitment to pay for his medical care and pay off the hospital's outstanding debts. Her throat constricted. The hospital bills had been shown to her. She was aware that they were in danger of going bankrupt. She added. " I also have conditions." Adrian's brows furrowed. "I'm paying attention." "During the marriage, I retain complete executive control over Bennett Enterprise. Unless I tell you to, you don't get involved." He nodded. "Alright." "Secondly, you will clear my father's name in public. Use your influence to get interviews and press releases. He is not a thief." Adrian crossed his arms. "Already taken care of. However, my PR team can set it up if you would like to write the precise story. ?" She added. "My family's shares should be transferred back to me and I reserve the right to sue if this arrangement terminates early for any reason not specified in the contract. Such as manipulation, coercion, or slander." After staring at her for a moment he nodded slowly and approvingly. "I thought too little of you." "No," she said. "You simply assumed that I would be too desperate to engage in negotiations." He slid the pen across the table with a faint smile. "When you're ready, sign it." Sophia thought for a moment. Her heart raced. She would no longer be Sophia Bennett with a single pen stroke. She would be the wife of the most mysterious billionaire, Adrian Drake. She took the pen in her hand. It seemed strange to see someone else write her signature. Taking the pen back Adrian signed neatly and fluidly without hesitation. "The task was completed. Your soul was just sold," she whispered to herself. He leaned in. "No. You just bought yourself more time to repair the damages in your company. A heavy but comfortable silence enveloped them, creating an almost tangible barrier that held their emotions at bay. It was a moment suspended in time, filled with unsaid words and unexpressed feelings, as if the world outside had faded away. Then, breaking the stillness, Adrian stood up, his movements deliberate and confident. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing strong forearms that hinted at his readiness for whatever came next. As he extended his hand toward her, a sense of finality hung in the air. Sophia met his gaze, and without hesitation, she took his hand in hers. The warmth of his grip enveloped her, cozy and incredibly stable, grounding her in a way she hadn't expected. In that brief moment, a rush of emotions surged within her-relief, apprehension, and a flicker of hope. But just like that, it was over. On paper, they were married. The weight of the declaration settled over them, a mere formality that felt monumental in its implications. There was no grand celebration, no fanfare; it was simply a new chapter that had begun with a handshake. Without another word, Sophia turned and walked away, her heart a mix of uncertainty and determination. Each step echoed in the silence behind her, a reminder of the choices she had made and the journey that lay ahead. She didn't look back; instead, she focused on the path before her, ready to face whatever awaited. Sophia awoke the following morning to the constant buzzing of her phone. In her hotel bed, she rolled over with a groan and reached blindly across the sheets. Ten phones missed calls and Forty-two messages remain unread. A barrage of tags appeared in her notifications. As soon as she opened her screen she saw the headline. Breaking news: Unbelievably Adrian Drake and Sophia Bennett a disgraced heiress have a private marriage." Her legs became tangled with the covers as she sat up quickly. Her name was trending on the internet. #Sophia Drake. #Marriage Merger. #The Billionaire Wedding. Sophia felt her heart race. She started by reading the first article. The unexpected marriage of Sophia Bennett the heiress of the scandal-plagued Bennett Global and Adrian Drake's most elusive billionaire has been confirmed by sources. It is rumored that the union is a strategic business decision meant to boost the company's worth and public confidence. She was photographed entering Adrian's penthouse the previous evening. Zoomed-in pictures of her holding a silver folder. The puzzle had been solved by the world. Fearing the comments she browsed through Twitter. "She is taking advantage of him." "No. It's a classic power play.. he's using her. " "A publicity stunt." "She looks broken, that poor girl." "I'm eager for this marriage to fall apart in six months." All these comments reeked of bitterness and resentment. She doesn't even have an idea who these people are, yet they hold a bitter grudge against her. Is this what it feels like to be in the public spotlight? She dragged her fingers through her hair Sophia put down the phone. She was trembling and her hands were also shaking. She heard a gentle tap on the door. She quickly regained herself. "Yes." Lara, Adrian's assistant, entered with a tablet in her hand. She was wearing a sharp gray suit. " Mrs. Drake, your stylist is waiting downstairs. And you have a 10:a.m briefing before the press conference." She blinked. "Press conference?" Lara nodded. "It's expected that you and Mr. Drake will appear together at The Watercrest Hotel. Interviews, cameras, and pictures." Sophia drew the sheets closer to her body. "Already." "The media doesn't wait. Neither do the shareholders." Lara handed her the tablet. "Here are three pre-approved statements for you to choose from. Mr. Drake's team has coordinated language to avoid triggering a backlash." Sophia focused on the screen. She was now a headline. A walking PR strategy. Since the contract signing, she hadn't even seen Adrian. Sophia sat silently as Lara walked away. She believed that someone else was leading her life. Someone bolder. A colder person. She had to pull it together. She has a name to protect. A legacy to salvage. And a marriage to fake for twelve months. A contract had been signed. The actual performance was about to begin.
