Chapter 4 Scarred, Not Shattered

The academy was silent at night too silent. A thick, suffocating kind of silence that made every echo of my footsteps feel like a scream. I moved through the darkened hallways like a shadow, wrapped in sweats, hoodie pulled up, blood still dried on my knuckles from the night before. No one came to this part of the training hall after curfew. No one but me. Because when the rest of the world was asleep, when the stares stopped, and the laughter faded, and Dante's voice stopped repeating you're weak in the back of my mind, I could breathe. A little. I could bleed in peace.

I could let the rage out.

The padded floor of the gym welcomed me like a grave, cold and familiar. I dropped my bag in the corner and began moving without thought-push-ups, squats, kicks, jabs, punches, sweat dripping down my spine as I pushed myself past the edge.

My muscles screamed with every strike against the reinforced steel pillar, the sound of bone hitting metal ringing through the room like a war drum. I punched until the skin on my knuckles split, until my arms shook, until my chest heaved. But I didn't stop. Not yet. I needed to feel this. I needed to know that I could still feel something other than shame. Something other than the hollow that Dante left behind when he crushed our bond like it meant nothing.

I didn't train for approval. I didn't train to prove anything to anyone. I trained because if I didn't, I would fall apart. Because when he stood in front of me and spat those words in front of the entire academy when he rejected me with a sneer in his voice and ice in his eyes, I had a choice. Break. Or rise and I wasn't going to break. Not again. Not for him.

There was something building in me now, something raw and ancient. I could feel it crawling under my skin, pulsing in my veins when I pushed my body past its limits. It wasn't my wolf. Not exactly. My wolf had been silent since the ceremony, wounded and withdrawn. This was something else. Something colder. A whisper in my blood that grew louder every time I stood alone in this room and made pain my prayer.

By the time the clock hit 3 a.m., I was already on the floor, my breath ragged, my hair plastered to my forehead, and my eyes burning with unshed fury. My body was shaking, but my mind was clear and sharper than it had ever been. And then... it happened.

A tingling sensation spread from my fingers to my chest, then down my spine like static laced with fire. I sat up slowly, blinking, unsure if I was dizzy or not. The air around me had thickened, heavy and charged. Something shifted; I could feel it deep in the marrow of my bones.

Without warning, a blast of invisible force exploded from my core-a pulse, like a shockwave-and a sharp crack echoed through the room. My eyes shot up in time to see the massive mirror on the far wall shatter into a thousand glittering pieces, raining glass like violent snow.

My heart thundered in my chest.

I hadn't touched it and I hadn't moved either.

I staggered to my feet, staring at the spiderweb of destruction as reality caught up with me. My breathing slowed but my thoughts didn't. The whispers in my head, the ones that had started whispering ever since the ceremony, suddenly surged louder. I couldn't understand the words, but I felt them, felt their hunger and their warning.

Then I looked in the broken shards of glass scattered at my feet, my blood turned cold, my eyes weren't blue anymore; they were glowing silver. Only for a second, just a flicker.

But it was real and it terrified me.

I grabbed my bag and ran out of the gym before whatever it was inside me could rise again.

The next morning, I moved through the academy like a ghost. But they still saw me. The whispers still followed me a mutt, pathetic, and rejected girl. I ignored them all. The hallway blurred around me, nothing but white noise. I wasn't here for them not anymore.

Until I reached the outdoor sparring field-and saw him.

Dante Thorne.

The bastard who broke me in front of the entire school now stood in the center of the training ground, laughing with his friends like he hadn't destroyed someone three nights ago. He looked as lethal as ever, black shirt clinging to his body, dark hair falling into his eyes, smug smile carved onto that perfect face like a damn god. He turned-and saw me.

Our eyes locked.

His smirk slipped.

Not completely. But enough.

I didn't look away this time.

I didn't cower.

And for the first time... he was the one who looked uncertain. I felt it the shift.

Whatever happened in that gym last night-it wasn't just power. It was a warning, to him.

To me, it was something watching and deep down, I knew this wasn't the end of whatever was awakening inside me.

It was just the beginning.
