Chapter 5 Whispers In Glass

The USB drive sat untouched on Emma's coffee table, a black sliver of plastic and secrets. The warning still echoed:

"Don't trust Jack Hayes either."

She stared at it through the night, sipping coffee gone cold, her laptop closed but waiting. If the file was corrupted, it could destroy her system. If it was traced, it could reveal her source-or worse, her intentions.

But she had already stepped too far into this.

At dawn, she ran a system scan, created a shadow partition, and plugged in the drive.

One folder. No password.

PROJECT WESTFALL – ASSET CLEARANCE

Inside: documents, photos, transcripts-some with Jack's name, some with Claire's. Most were dry, technical legal files. But one line made her stop breathing:

"Asset E-C. Monitor closely. Escalating influence on CEO's private decisions."

E-C. Emma Carter.

She clicked on the attached report. There were time logs. Elevator entries. Coffee breaks. File access history.

Every move she'd made since the promotion.

Someone had been watching her from the moment she stepped onto Level Twenty-Seven.

At work, the building felt sharper. Not colder-sharper. Every click of a heel sounded too precise. Every turn of a head felt delayed. When Emma reached her floor, her badge blinked red before unlocking. She glanced behind her. No one was there.

She made it to her desk. Jack's office door was open.

He stood in the corner, staring out the glass wall at the skyline. A silent storm in a dark suit.

"I need to speak with you," she said.

He turned slowly, his face unreadable. "About what?"

She hesitated. "Claire. Legal control. Westfall."

He walked toward her, closing the door behind him. "What do you know?"

"I know you're being controlled. And I know you're trying to outmaneuver her without looking like it."

Jack's jaw tightened. "You've been speaking to Callen."

"I've been trying to protect myself," she said. "And Max."

Something in him flickered. "Then you understand what's at stake."

She hesitated again. Then said, "What is Project Westfall really?"

Jack walked to his desk, pressed a hidden switch. A panel opened from the wall. Inside, a thin binder labeled:

W-5: CONFIDENTIAL.

He placed it in front of her.

"It was originally a fallback plan. Designed to dismantle Hayes Enterprises if a hostile entity ever took control."

"Like Claire?"

He nodded. "I trusted her. Once."

Emma opened the binder slowly. There were names. Employees. Numbers beside them. She didn't understand.

"Asset ranking," Jack said. "A loyalty algorithm."

"You're tracking everyone?"

"We were," he said. "Then she took it over. Now she uses it to neutralize threats-like you."

Emma's stomach turned. "Then why haven't you stopped her?"

Jack's voice was flat. "Because she owns fifty-one percent of the voting board. And because I let her in too deep."

He sat across from her, shoulders heavy. "But I'm done being cautious."

A beat passed. Then another.

Jack looked her directly in the eyes. "Emma, I'm going to burn Westfall to the ground. But I need someone inside to help me do it."

Emma didn't sleep that night. Her mind reeled with every piece of information she'd uncovered. Her apartment, usually her sanctuary, felt too still. Too exposed. As dawn broke over the skyline, her instincts buzzed with the memory of Claire's voice on the audio file. There had been malice in her tone. Confidence. As if she already knew the ending of the game and was merely watching the rest of them fumble through the middle.

And then there was Jack.

The look in his eyes when he handed her that binder. She had expected resistance. Maybe even evasion. But instead, he gave her everything. Or did he? Trusting him meant giving him the power to ruin her. But distrusting him meant she was utterly alone in a war she didn't start.

She opened the Project Westfall binder again in the pale morning light. Each name listed inside was tagged with levels. Emma Carter – Level 2. Claire Wrenford – Level 10. Damian Callen – Level 4. The numerical rankings weren't just about loyalty-they tracked influence, access, perceived threat. And next to Emma's name, a handwritten note in bold red ink:

"PROMOTED TO LEVEL 5 – TO BE MONITORED."

Emma slammed the binder shut.

She was being watched even now.

Later that morning, Hayes Enterprises buzzed with an energy she hadn't felt before. The elevators moved faster, the assistants spoke in lower tones. Something was happening.

A meeting had been called. An executive session, Jack's calendar said. "Level 39 – Boardroom Alpha."

Emma hadn't been invited.

But Callen had.

He passed her in the corridor and slipped her a flash drive with a look that said everything.

She watched the meeting from her laptop in silence. It was a grainy security feed, but the audio was clear.

Claire sat at the head of the table. Immaculate. Powerful. Radiating venom behind her practiced smile.

"The agenda," she said, tapping a folder, "is Jack Hayes' recent misuse of discretionary authority. Including the unauthorized promotion of an unvetted assistant to executive level."

Jack didn't flinch. "Emma Carter has performed above expectation. Her appointment is justified."

"She accessed proprietary archives."

"I granted her access," Jack said. "You know that."

"And that's exactly why we're here," Claire purred. "You're making decisions that compromise board integrity."

Then, she dropped the bomb.

"We're proposing a vote to limit Jack Hayes' power pending full internal audit."

The board murmured. Jack leaned back in his chair, eyes locked on her. "You want to suspend me?"

"No," Claire said. "Just contain you."

Emma stood frozen.

This was bigger than she thought. Claire wasn't just manipulating from the shadows-she was staging a corporate coup.

That evening, as Emma sorted documents at her desk, the office lights flickered.

Power shift.

When she reached the lobby, she found a slip of paper taped under her desk drawer:

"Go to Suite B. Midnight. Alone."

Suite B was part of the restricted records vault. Off-limits. Locked by retinal scan.

But her executive badge now carried Claire's override.

At midnight, the building was a skeleton of steel and silence.

Emma's heels echoed across the floor as she moved through the corridors. The door to Suite B accepted her scan and opened with a whisper.

Inside: rows of locked cabinets. Surveillance monitors. And on the center table... a single file labeled:

CLAIRE – DECLASSIFIED.

She opened it with trembling hands.

What she found was explosive.

Claire wasn't just Jack's former partner in business. She was his half-sister.

Illegitimate daughter of Henry Hayes-the original founder. Her rise through the company had been aided by that connection, buried under layers of forged documents and carefully constructed lies.

And she had been promised Hayes Enterprises. But Jack had inherited the name and the empire.

Everything Claire had done-from Project Westfall to her manipulation of the board-had been revenge. Not business.

Blood.

Emma took photos. Every page. Every signature.

Then she heard it.

A breath.

Not hers.

She turned, heart hammering. The room was empty.

But the monitors now blinked with red text:

"ACCESS BREACH DETECTED."

Emma ran.

Alarms hadn't started yet, but they would.

She made it to the back stairwell and ducked into the shadows. Her chest heaved. Her phone vibrated.

Jack Hayes: "What did you do?"

She didn't reply.

Because now she knew why she was hired.

And why she was never supposed to survive this far.
