Chapter 3

Numb.

That' s the only word Ava could find for the feeling that settled over her after the gala. She moved through the final hours of the job on autopilot. Report filed. Keys returned. Handover complete. She walked out of the agency building for the last time without a single word to Ethan.

She went back to the apartment they had shared. It wasn' t hers or his, just a functional space owned by the company. It smelled of gun oil, stale coffee, and him. The scent was suffocating.

She didn't sleep. She sat on the floor of the spartan living room, staring at the wall, replaying his words over and over.

"You' re acting like a crazy ex-girlfriend."

"It' s embarrassing."

"You' re my partner, nothing more."

The numbness was a shield. If she let herself feel anything, she was afraid she would splinter into a million pieces.

The next afternoon, she heard a key in the lock. Ethan. He was supposed to be on a plane with Chloe, starting a new, more lucrative contract her father had arranged for him.

Ava didn't move from her spot on the floor.

He walked in, dropping his bag by the door. He stopped short when he saw her.

"Ava? What are you still doing here?" he asked, his tone wary.

She didn' t answer. She just looked at him.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Look, about last night... I was harsh. I' m sorry. Chloe was just... you surprised us."

An apology. A weak, self-serving one. It meant nothing.

"I' m just packing up my last few things," he said, avoiding her gaze. He walked into his bedroom, leaving the door open.

A few minutes later, Chloe' s voice drifted out. "Is she gone yet?" She was on the phone.

Ava' s head snapped up.

"Almost," Ethan said in a low voice. "Just give me a few minutes, okay? I' ll meet you at the hotel." There was a pause. "Yeah. I love you, too."

The words were a fresh wound. Ava pushed herself to her feet, her legs stiff. A morbid curiosity pulled her toward his open bedroom door. She stood in the hallway, hidden from his line of sight, and listened.

She heard the tell-tale sound of a designer suitcase being zipped. Then, Chloe' s voice came from the phone again, tinny and sharp. "Make sure you don' t leave anything important behind. Especially not that tacky locket thing she gave you. It' s so childish."

Ava' s blood ran cold. The locket. A cheap, silver heart they' d bought from a street vendor in Budapest when they were seventeen. They' d each taken half. It was the first gift she' d ever given anyone. The first one she' d ever received.

"Don' t worry, I' m getting rid of it," Ethan' s voice was casual, dismissive. "It never meant anything. It was just a stupid trinket to keep her happy, you know? To keep her loyal. She was always so needy, so desperate for any scrap of affection. Honestly, Chloe, she' s been a weight around my neck for years. Being with you... it' s like I can finally breathe."

The world went silent. The shield of numbness shattered, and in its place was a white-hot, clarifying rage. It wasn' t heartbreak anymore. It was disgust. Pure, undiluted revulsion.

He hadn' t just been oblivious. He had been actively using her. Manipulating her love and loyalty to keep his perfect partner, his flawless backup, in place.

And Chloe. Ava finally saw the truth of her. The sweet, innocent act was a masterful performance. Chloe hadn' t just stumbled into this. She had targeted Ethan, and she had systematically dismantled Ava. She had seen the crack in their partnership-Ava' s unrequited love-and hammered a wedge into it with precision. The way Chloe' s eyes had gleamed at the gala... it wasn' t just triumph. It was the thrill of the hunt, the joy of causing pain.

Ava turned and walked silently to the small kitchen. On the counter was a magnetic strip holding their mission knives. She took hers, a custom-made Ka-Bar with her initial, 'A' , etched at the base of the blade. His matching knife, with an 'E' , was right beside it.

She walked back to the living room and placed her knife on the low coffee table. The metal made a soft, final clink against the wood. It was a symbolic severing. The end of Ghost. The end of their partnership. The end of everything.

She picked up her bag, ready to walk out the door and never look back.

But the door to the bedroom opened. Chloe, it seemed, had gotten impatient. She stood in the doorway, a vision in a silk blouse and a smug smile. Ethan was right behind her.

"Oh, you' re still here," Chloe said, her tone bored. She let her eyes drift down to the knife on the table, then back to Ava. "Leaving him a little present?"

She stepped into the room, sauntering over to Ethan' s side and linking her arm through his. She looked up at him, then back at Ava.

"You know, Ethan was just telling me how relieved he is to finally be free," Chloe said, her voice a purr. "He' s got a much brighter future now. With me. We' re going to be so happy."

She was intentionally twisting the knife, enjoying every second of Ava' s reaction.

But Ava felt nothing. The rage had burned out, leaving behind an icy calm.

She just looked at Chloe, then at Ethan, who had the decency to look slightly uncomfortable.

"I' m sure you will be," Ava said, her voice devoid of all emotion.

She turned to leave.

"Wait," Chloe said. Her smile was gone, replaced by a flash of something ugly. "Don' t think you can just run off to that ridiculous marriage your grandfather cooked up for you. The Hayes family might be tech royalty, but they' re still our rivals. My father will not be pleased. A word from me, and your 'quiet life' could get very... complicated."

It was a threat. A petty, vindictive power play.

And it was a mistake.

Something inside Ava, a wire pulled taut for weeks, finally snapped. Before she even consciously decided to move, her body reacted. She dropped her bag and her hand shot out, grabbing a fistful of Chloe' s expensive silk blouse. She slammed the heiress back against the wall.

The sound of impact echoed in the silent apartment.

Chloe' s eyes went wide with shock and fear.

"You have no idea who you' re threatening," Ava said, her voice a low, dangerous whisper. Her face was inches from Chloe' s. "You live in a world of money and influence. I live in a world of consequences. You push me again, and you will find out what that means."

"Ava, stop!" Ethan yelled, rushing forward. He grabbed Ava' s arm and yanked her back, pulling her away from a terrified Chloe. He immediately put himself between them, checking to see if Chloe was alright.

"Are you crazy?" he shouted at Ava, his face contorted with fury. He was protecting Chloe. From her.

The last, final piece of her old self broke away and turned to dust.

Ava ignored him. Her eyes were fixed on the small, silver chain hanging around Chloe' s neck. It was half of a heart. Her half. He had given her half of the locket to Chloe.

"The locket," Ava said, her voice numb. "You gave it to her."

Ethan looked from the locket on Chloe' s neck to Ava' s face. He looked flustered, caught.

"It' s just a piece of metal, Ava," he said dismissively, his voice regaining its cold edge. "It doesn' t mean anything. Let it go."

He turned his back on her completely, putting a protective arm around Chloe' s shoulders. "Come on, let' s get out of here. She' s lost her mind."

He guided a shaken but triumphant Chloe toward the door, not even giving Ava a second glance. They walked out, and the door clicked shut behind them, leaving Ava alone in the empty apartment with the silence, the smell of him, and the knife on the table.

The silence was broken by the ringing of her phone. It was the number from her grandfather' s office.

"Miss Reed," the formal voice said. "The car is waiting for you downstairs. It will take you to the airfield."

Ava looked around the empty room one last time. She didn' t pick up the knife. She left it there, a relic of a dead life.

She picked up her bag and walked out, closing the door on her past for the final time.
