Chapter 4: Pregnancy test
Jade felt a shock from the smooth, dark, and icy voice. It can only be Kaelan, she recognised the tone of his voice which got her mesmerized.
"How did you get my number?" she asked. Kaelan chuckled and replied, "I have my ways." For a moment, there was only silence, until he spoke again, "Tell me where you are."
"I'm in a place you can't even imagine," she replied before hanging up the phone.
The next day, Jade left her room and went to the sitting room for breakfast. "Good morning, sir! Hi, ma!" she greeted them cheerfully.
"Did you sleep well?" they asked her. "Come over and sit; the food is getting cold!" they invited her warmly.
"Thank you, ma," Jade replied as she sat beside Darian at the dining table. "How are you?" she whispered to him.
"I was fine, until you came along and stole my parents' attention," Darian joked, making a sad puppy face.
"No one is stealing us, alright?" his mom said, and they all laughed together as they enjoyed their meal.
Suddenly, the smell of eggs and bacon, which had once been enjoyable, started to upset Jade's stomach. She felt saliva build up in her mouth, and she squeezed the tablecloth tightly with her fingers. Her fork carelessly fell onto her plate, making a loud noise.
"Jade? You look pale," Darian said. His parents turned to her with concern. "Are you okay, honey?"
"I'm fine," Jade lied as she quickly walked to the bathroom. She knelt on the cold tiles and vomited.
Afterward, Jade stood up and looked in the mirror. She saw a pale young woman who looked frightened. She placed her trembling hand on her stomach and whispered, "This can't be real."
Jade returned to the dining room, acting as if nothing had happened. Everyone stared at her as though they were expecting an explanation. "I'm fine, I must have eaten something that didn't agree with me last night," Jade said, trying to put their worries to rest.
Two days later, "Good morning, it's Jade Foster on the line," Jade said immediately after the person on the other end picked up. I'd like to confirm my appointment with the doctor today. "
"Alright ma, I'll check it as soon as possible" the person replied. "Hang on". The call went silent, and the only sound Jade could hear was the rattling sound of keyboards.
Jade breathed a sigh of relief when she heard "You have an appointment with the doctor at 9am, Ma". She dressed up and headed to the hospital.
She arrived and sat at the edge of a paper-covered table, nervously twisting her finger. A nurse entered with a clipboard. "Jade, I'm Nurse Milburn. The doctor will be in shortly, but first I want you to confirm your purpose here".
"Yeah. I uh...my period is late and I have been feeling off, sick, weak. I took a home test but I just want to be sure". Jade explained.
"That makes sense. We'll start with a simple urine test, and based on those results, we might also do a blood test to check your HCG levels for more clarity," the nurse explained to Jade before handing her a small container and directing her to the restroom.
"Just leave the sample on the tray when you're done" the doctor smiled at her. Jade took the cup and left for the bathroom. A minute later, she returned and gave the content to the nurse, who patted her on the shoulder before leaving.
Suddenly, the room was quiet as Jade stared at the second hand of the clock moving slowly. Just then, Doctor Collins walked in, looking over the medical chart. "Jade, I have some news for you. Your test result is positive; congratulations, you're going to have a baby!"
Jade took a moment to steady herself, placing her hands over her mouth in shock. "I understand this might be overwhelming for you at the moment. If you have any questions, we can discuss them together," the doctor said gently.
"I think I need a moment, but thank you," Jade barely said from her tightened throat., Her eyes were filled with tears as she spoke.
"I'm feeling hopeful," she added, gently rubbing her belly.
Jade left the hospital thinking over the news she had just received. As soon as she stepped out, a car horn sounded, Jade looked in the direction of the sound.
The car window slid down smoothly, and she saw a familiar face, it was Kaelan. "Hello, Jade. Come in let's talk".
"I have nothing to say, moreover how did you find me" Jade sighed, placing her hand on her forehead, trying to put up with the discomfort. Jade continued walking, neglecting Kaelan who was still talking to her. "Please Jade, wait. We can talk this out" he drove after her.
"Please Jade" Kaelan stopped the engine and ran after Jade, holding her wrist. "Let me go," she said.
"Let's discuss". After much pleading, Jade agreed to go in his car with him. They drove to a nearby restaurant, placed an order, and were expecting.
"Kaelan, let me get this straight with you. I just left the hospital, where I went to perform a test" Jade said.
"Okay?" Kaelan sounded a bit confused. "What I'm saying is, I'm pregnant" Jade spat the news.
"Wow, so...you mean I'm about to be a fa...." Kaelan's eyebrows lifted in astonishment. Jade looked at him in disgust "And who told you, you are the father. You aren't."
Kaelan felt disappointed, but still played cool. "You mean, you're pregnant for your Ex?". "Yes, I am" Jade replied.
"Alright, but we can still be cool". Kealan pleaded. "Yeah, if you're okay with it" Jade responded. "Your meal is here sir" the waiter served the food.
After they finished eating, Kaelan offered to give Jade a ride, but she firmly said no. "Thanks, but I'll take a cab," she replied. Jade then got into a taxi and drove away.
Jade arrived home, thinking she was free from disturbances. She took out her spare keys to unlock the door. Just as she was about to push the door open, she heard a familiar voice saying, "So this is where you live."
"Oh no, how did he find me?" thoughts stirred up in her mind.
