Alexandra's Pov
It was stormy and the clouds were beginning to gather causing the window panel to crack open. I lay on my bed with my eyes staring at the ceiling in deep thought.
The cold wasn't even the least of my troubles. So many thoughts ran through my mind and they were mostly about how I could fix my accommodation issue.
The window opened due to the force of the wind and I walked to the curtain to close it. The street was quiet and everyone was running into their apartment as they prepared for the rain.
My eyes caught on something.
A black SUV was parked directly in front of my building. It had a tinted window and no plate number.
Something about the car didn't sit well with me.
"Maybe it's just someone visiting," I whispered to myself.
But I didn't believe it.
No one will ever visit me in a black SUV.
I shrugged my shoulders and closed the window, returning to my bed with the thoughts of the eviction in my mind again.
Maybe Mr. Russo had changed his mind.
Perhaps the SUV has nothing to do with me.
I rose from the bed again, hearing the noise coming from the bathroom, and went to check to check it out when a loud knock came through the door.
It wasn't a friendly knock. It was the kind that made my heart skip and my blood run cold.
Bang. Bang. Bang!
The knock came again and this time I froze.
It didn't stop and I knew I had to answer the door. I grabbed a piece of metal and held it behind, just in case it was an intruder.
"Who is it?" I called with a trembling voice.
There was no reply for a moment, after which a calm voice came through.
"Miss Thompson?"
It wasn't a voice that I recognized.
"What do you want?" I asked with my back against the wall beside the door.
"Can you let me in, so we could talk?" He asked calmly and politely.
"I don't even know you," I said out loud.
"I am here on behalf of Mr. Vincenzo Morano. He wishes to speak with you."
The announcement forced me to gasp in disbelief.
Vincenzo Morano.
The most powerful man in New York City.
What does he want from a woman like me?
Everyone knows that Morano is a dangerous man. He has been tagged the king of the New York Underground world for so many years.
"I don't think I know him," I said, trying to calm my breath down.
"You will eventually get to know him. All I am asking is for you to let me in." The voice assured me with so much calmness once again.
I reached for the door with trembling hands and pulled it back forcing it to open and a man walked into the room dressed in a black tuxedo.
He smiled calmly as he stared at me. "Miss Thompson. My name is Leo. I work with Mr. Morano."
"What does he want from me?" I asked.
Leo's eyes gazed over my body but not in the way most men would do. It was not filled with desire, it felt like he was being calculative.
"There has been a transaction." He said calmly. "Mr. Morano has acquired you."
I stared blankly at him. "I am sorry... What did you just say?"
Leo reached out to his suit and pulled out a folder. "Your ex-husband, Mark, signed over guardianship rights. Which means that you will be under Mr. Morano's Control immediately."
I'm so confused. I didn't know that Mark was still my legal guardian. I thought everything was dissolved together with our marriage.
I snatched the folder from his hand and pulled it open with trembling hands. My eyes widened as I read the content of the folder.
A legal document with different signatures and stamps and Mark's name written boldly at the bottom of the page.
"This is a lie!" I said out loud.
"I am sorry but nothing about it is a lie." He said calmly.
"This....This is not legal. I am nobody's property!" This can't happen, at least not without my consent. I was visibly shaking at the moment.
Leo stared at me in the eye. "That's questionable Miss Thompson. In Mr. Morano's world, everything has a price and your ex-husband was more than willing to sell."
I couldn't believe what my ears were hearing. Who sells or buys a human being?
My knees were weak and I tried staying upright by holding the door frame. All I wanted to do was to scream and throw something.
I managed to look back up at Leo, who was still giving me a stare. "What does he want from me?"
"Mr. Morano doesn't share the reason for his purchase. One thing I can assure you however is that he doesn't act without a purpose. You will be well taken care of." He assured.
"I don't want his protection!" I hissed angrily. "I don't want to have anything to do with him."
"I think it is a little bit too late for that." He said and turned to the door, making a gesture with his finger.
"You have two options. The first option is that you can come willingly right now. Or we can have this conversation tomorrow after this building is condemned and your belongings thrown out on the streets."
I tried to argue with him but I did not possess enough strength to start yelling. It felt like I was completely fooled and cornered to a spot.
There seems to be completely nothing I can do about it.
"Oh and for the record, your house was bought by Mr. Morano. He had done this because he figured you would be very stubborn and not accept it." Leo added.
At this point, I did not doubt that there was nothing I could do. It almost felt like Mark sold me because of his greed.
I should have known he had ulterior motives when he called.
Now I have no choice but to follow a man, who could potentially kill me without blinking an eye.
"So what is it going to be?" Leo asked with a smirk on his face.
