Chapter 2 THE NIGHT OF UNCERTAINTY

Tonia sat at the bar, nursing a whiskey on the rocks as she stared blankly at the TV screen behind the counter. The dim lighting and familiar rhythms of the bar were just what she needed to unwind after a long day of planning weddings. Her mind drifted back to the countless details she had meticulously orchestrated, from the flowers to the cake. "My life is perfect," she whispered, but the words felt hollow. Deep down, she knew something was off.

She craved the love, attention, pampering, late-night drives, and passionate sex. Rowland had satisfied those needs, and every time she thought of him, her mind wandered back to that one night on the kitchen counter. His warm breath against her neck, his hands tracing her skin, and their bodies pressed together – she missed it all.

But her phone, email, and social media profiles told a different story. They showcased her perfectly planned life, a facade that hid her true desires. What about the things she couldn't control? What about the things that made her feel truly alive?

"Mind if I join you?" a voice interrupted her thoughts.

Tonia turned to see a stranger standing beside her, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. She hesitated for a moment before nodding, and the stranger took a seat beside her.

"I'm Owen," he said, his leg brushing against hers, sending a spark of electricity through her body.

They struck up a conversation, discussing everything from music to their jobs. Tonia found herself laughing and smiling, feeling a sense of ease she hadn't experienced in a long time.

As they chatted, Owen's eyes kept drifting back to hers, his gaze lingering on her face like he was trying to memorize every feature. Tonia felt a shiver run down her spine, her heart beating faster with every passing minute. She was sure she knew how to keep these feelings in check, but Owen's presence made her feel uncertain.

As the night wore on, Tonia found herself opening up to Owen in ways she never thought possible. She shared her passion for art, her job as an event planner, and the stress that came with it. Owen listened intently, his eyes never leaving hers, as he shared his own stories about writing and his struggles to find inspiration.

The bar began to empty, and the bartender started to clean up. Owen glanced at his watch and smiled apologetically. "I'm so sorry, I didn't realize it was getting so late. Would you like to grab some coffee with me, or maybe take a walk outside?"

Tonia hesitated, unsure of what to do. She had never gone on a date with someone she had just met, but as she looked into Owen's eyes, she felt a spark of connection that she couldn't ignore.

She tried standing up by it seems she was in a rollercoaster;she was drunk.

"I feel tipsy myself," Owen said, smiling and exposing a nice set of teeth."Let's grab a warm cup of coffee from across the street,it might help wear it off", he offered.

Tonia smiled back, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'd love to."

Owen smiled, his face lighting up with excitement. "Great," he said, standing up and holding out his hand to help her up. "Let's get out of here and see where the night takes us."

As she took his hand, a jolt of electricity ran through her body, and Tonia felt like she was waking up from a long, dreamless sleep. Owen had shaken her awake, and for the first time in a long time, she felt a sense of hope and possibility.

They walked out of the bar, into the cool night air, and Tonia felt like she was stepping into a new chapter of her life. One that was full of uncertainty, but also full of promise.

As they entered the coffee shop, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped them, and they ordered a cup each. They sat down at a small table by the window, and their conversation flowed easily.

As they finished their coffee, Owen glanced at his watch and smiled. "I'm so sorry, but I have an early morning tomorrow," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Tonia felt a pang of disappointment but smiled and nodded. "Yeah, me too," she said, gathering her things.

As they stood up to leave, Owen pulled out his phone and asked, "Can I get your contact address, email or something ? I'd love to grab coffee with you again sometime." Tonia smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest, and recited her contact as he typed it into his phone. As he handed her his phone to confirm, their fingers touched, and she felt a tingling sensation. She blushed, muttering under her breath, "Always stupid in love."

Owen's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "What did you say?" he asked.

Tonia smiled, playing it cool. "Just, uh, talking to myself," she said.

With this exchanged, Owen offered to walk her out. As they stepped out of the coffee shop, he gestured down the street. "I'm headed this way," he said. "I'll walk with you for a bit."

The walk was comfortable, and Tonia found herself feeling more at ease with each step. They turned a corner, and Owen nodded ahead. "I'm just a few blocks from here," he said.

Without thinking, Tonia nodded and continued to walk with him. The silence between them was easy, and Tonia felt like she had known Owen for years.

As they approached his apartment building, Owen slowed down and smiled. "Thanks for walking with me," he said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "I had a great time tonight."

Tonia smiled back, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. "I did too," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

The air was charged with possibility as they stood outside his apartment. Owen's eyes locked onto hers, and Tonia felt like time had stopped. The world around them melted away, leaving only the two of them, suspended in this moment.
