Chapter 3

I rushed back to Leo' s side. "Leo, what do you mean, Chloe finished her mission?"

His eyes were wide. "Mr. Giggles gives us missions. If we do them, we get to go. Chloe did hers."

"What was her mission, baby?" My voice trembled.

He looked towards his window. "She' s flying now. On a rainbow comet. Mr. Giggles said."

He pointed. I saw nothing but the dark sky.

My phone rang. It was Ms. Albright. Her voice was strained, cracking.

"Sarah... it's Chloe. She... she fell."

"Fell from where?" I whispered, already knowing.

"From her apartment window. She didn't make it."

The world tilted. Leo' s words. She' s flying now.

The school administration got involved. The police. Detective Miller came to the preschool, asked questions.

A small group of us parents whose kids saw Mr. Giggles met in the school parking lot after talking to the detective. David, Noah' s father. Jessica, Ethan' s mother. And me.

We pieced it together. Five children were "chosen." Each saw Mr. Giggles differently. Noah saw the "newspaper lady." Ethan saw a "man made of TV static." Only Leo saw the "shadow man with spider legs." And Chloe... Chloe had seen him too.
