Chapter 1

Ethan meticulously arranged the microgreens on the seared scallops, the final touch for the third course. His farm-to-table lunch for Olivia was perfect, a testament to hours of sourcing and cooking. He wanted to show her he cared, that his support for her booming career at Veridian Dynamics wasn't just passive.

Olivia breezed into their Zilker condo an hour late, phone pressed to her ear.

"Amazing, Mark, absolutely amazing. Yes, send that over."

She barely glanced at the beautifully set table.

"Ethan, darling, I'm so sorry, completely forgot about a team lunch. Sudden craving for BBQ, you know Austin."

She pecked his cheek, grabbed her purse, and was gone.

A few hours later, Ethan' s phone buzzed. It was a screenshot from his sister, Chloe.

First, Olivia' s Instagram story: a close-up of a brisket sandwich from a famous Austin BBQ joint.

Caption: "Sometimes you just need that classic Austin comfort food! #KeepAustinWeird."

Then, Mark' s LinkedIn post: a lavish photo of Ethan' s multi-course meal, beautifully plated, clearly on an office desk.

Caption: "So grateful for a CEO like Olivia at Veridian Dynamics who truly values her team! #BestBoss #StartupLife #Blessed."

The scallops. The heirloom tomato salad. The lavender panna cotta. All there.

Ethan stared at the two images, side by side. His carefully crafted meal, given away like an afterthought, used as a prop for her assistant.

His phone rang again. Susan, Olivia' s mother.

"Ethan, Olivia just posted about getting BBQ. You need to understand, she's under a lot of stress. Don't make a fuss about lunch plans changing."

Her voice was chiding, laced with disappointment in him.

"Susan," Ethan said, his voice flat, "I understand stress."

He forwarded her Mark' s LinkedIn post without another word.

The silence on the other end was telling. Then, a hesitant, "Oh."

Ethan hung up. His efforts, his devotion, not just unappreciated, but actively discarded and repurposed for another' s gain.

This wasn't just about lunch.
