"Hey best human in the world"
A smile came on my face as the voice of my favorite human filtered into my ears. I sat back down on my chair to have a conversation with her.
"Guess what?"Her voice was alight with excitement.
"What is it? You know I'm not good with this guessing game"She laughed over the phone and I could just see her rolling her eyes as she lounged on her couch on the balcony of her apartment.
"Well, you kill joy, Guess who just got a job?"
She squealed into the phone and if it were not for the fact that I was in public, I would have squealed along with her. I knew just how long she had been trying to get a job since we both got back into the country just because she didn't want to work for me.
"Oh my goodness. Congratulations, girl"
"That's not the best part, Gia"
My nickname reminded me of my mother for a split second before I focused again on Mia who was speaking to me.
"Say that again. I didn't quite catch that"
"Are you really daydreaming right now?"She asked in a deadpan tone.
"I'm not. I just lost you for a second. The network must be a bit choppy over here"
"That excuse doesn't fly anymore. You're in the US now, not Africa"We shared a chuckle as we remembered all our encounters with the choppy internet service when we went to Africa to scout for the best grapes that money could buy for my winery.
"Whatever. What did you want to tell me?"I asked, curiosity bleeding into my tone. She perked up again.
"I have just been accepted as the secretary for the Managing Director of The Gon's Company!"She yelled over the phone in such a loud voice that I had to take the phone off my ear and wince so I didn't end up with a blocked ear because of her.
I pitied her neighbors because they were the ones who were forced to deal with her noisy attitude when she got excited about things. It took a moment for her words to register in my head and my eyes widened in shock.
"What? That's the Gonzales company"With the static I could hear, I deduced that she was nodding her head.
"Guess what?"There was more? I was going to end up having a coronary if she continued telling me things like that.
"The Managing Director is Dylan Petite and according to my research, he is a close friend of his son"I could just imagine her grinning mischievously as she spoke.
"Wow"
That was the only word I was capable of producing because I was stunned by the turn of events. The day that started off as irritating was ending off in such a high note.
"You know what that means, Gia? It means that we've got our foot in the door. I am going to be our inside spy. We are finally getting a step right and we can eventually get the revenge we've been planning for so long."Tears as usual, filled my eyes. I didn't know what I did to deserve such a dedicated friend like Mia but whatever it was, I was eternally grateful for it.
From the moment where I met Mia at the airport in Japan, she had stuck to my side like glue. It turned out that we were both orphans looking for a purpose in life. Technically, I wasn't an orphan because my father still had breath in his lungs but what was the difference between him and a dead man? They were both absent in my life.
"I can't ask you to do that, Mia. It'd be too risky"
"Listen to me, you over zealous big foot"A laugh spilled from my throat despite how serious she sounded. Ever since she found out that I was a shoe size bigger than her, I was big foot.
"We are in this together. We're going to bring the Gonzales family down together. Our sisterhood is for a lifetime"I nodded, understanding Mia's determination. She was right; we couldn't back down now, not when we were so close to achieving our goal. But deep down, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at the edges of my consciousness.
The Gonalez family was powerful, and crossing them could have serious consequences. I couldn't help but smile, a plan already forming in my mind. I was strengthened because I knew that I wasn't alone. My sister from another mother was with me and together, we were going to make them pay for what they did to me.
"We're going to take them down, Mia. And we're going to enjoy every minute of it."
"Now that's the spirit"We shared a laugh again over the phone, a sense of excitement and purpose filling the air because it was just the beginning of our revenge story. We spent a while on the phone, brainstorming and coming up with a solid plan.
She was going to work as a secretary, gaining her boss, Dylan's trust while gathering intel for me who was going to be waiting for for the perfect moment to strike. After a couple of hours with the sun starting to set, we said our goodbyes and got off the phone. I got up and walked to the counter to get some snacks to go because I had a mountain of work to plow through and some motivation was going to go a long way. As I did so, Someone bumped into me and spilled juice all over me.
"What is wrong with you?!" I exclaimed as I looked down at my pristine white shirt dripping with grape juice. I looked up to confront him but he had his eyes on his phone and didn't look up at me. He raised his hand and pointed to the man beside him that was probably his assistant.
"Get her name and number, and then transfer the money for damages" He ordered as he started walking away without even apologizing. I quickened my pace, catching up to him in a few strides.
"Hey, you rude bastard!" I called out before taking a glass of juice from a nearby table and throwing it at the back of his own expensive looking shirt. He stopped in his tracks, looked down at his body and spun around, shock on his face while his eyes blazed with uncontrollable fury.
"What the hell?" he bellowed, his voice laced with outrage.
"Do you have any idea who I am?" By that time we were already attracting a lot of people's attention towards us but all I could do was blink at him. I couldn't get my mouth to work to reply him because I was looking right into the face of the bastard who made me motherless by wrenching my mother away from me in a very unexpected way.
During the 5 years that I spent away from the country, I fantasize about meeting him again but in none of my fantasies did I end up meeting him in a restaurant. He killed my mother at a restaurant and I was meeting him right inside one. How ironic life was. A slow smile came on my lips as he screamed at me. It was just the beginning of my revenge story and I couldn't wait to see how it was going to unfold. Good thing I had a front row seat to it all.
