The creatures vanished like smoke in the wind, leaving only the heavy silence of the forest. Lysandra's breath came in ragged gasps as she clutched the crescent pendant, which now glowed faintly, as if alive.
Silvano wiped his dagger on his coat, eyes never leaving her. "Well, that was fun."
Lysandra blinked. "Fun?"
"Yeah," he said with a crooked grin. "Nothing like fighting shadow beasts at midnight to spice up your day."
She couldn't help but smile, despite the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.
"So," she said, trying to sound casual, "do you do this often? Rescue damsels from mysterious monsters?"
Silvano laughed-a deep, rough sound that sent a surprising warmth through her. "Only the ones with magic that could destroy the city. Lucky you."
Lysandra raised an eyebrow. "Charming."
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "I aim to please."
Their eyes locked, and for a heartbeat, the danger faded-replaced by something electric and dangerously close to... fun.
But then Silvano's expression turned serious. "Listen. We need a blood pact."
Lysandra's eyes widened. "Blood? Seriously? Can't we just sign a contract or something?"
He smirked. "Sorry, no paperwork in the mafia or magic business. Blood it is."
She rolled her eyes but held out her hand. "Fine. Let's get this over with."
Silvano pricked his finger expertly, then hers. Their blood mingled on the silver pendant, which flared brightly.
A pulse of energy shot through them both.
Lysandra stumbled, and Silvano caught her with a teasing grin. "Careful. Don't fall for me just yet."
She shoved him lightly. "Keep dreaming, Don."
As the forest seemed to exhale around them, Lysandra felt it-the undeniable truth of their bond, and the wild, chaotic adventure just beginning.
