Chapter 4

Back in their silent penthouse, Ava logged into the shared cloud.

Her hands were shaking, but her purpose was firm.

She navigated to the folder Chloe had access to.

And there it was.

Not just her early game concepts.

Audio files.

Ethan's voice, murmuring. Chloe's, giggling.

Intimate sounds. Bedroom sounds.

The dates stamped on the files went back two years.

Two years of lies. Two years of her life, a carefully constructed sham.

The air left her lungs.

She stumbled to the bathroom, hands over her mouth.

Sobs wracked her body, silent and violent.

The betrayal was a physical weight, crushing her.

She sank to the cold tile floor, tears streaming.

Her brilliant game developer, creator of emotionally resonant narratives.

Living a nightmare more twisted than any game she could design.

He had whispered such sweet words to her in this very apartment.

Held her close, promised her forever.

All while he was with Chloe.

Sharing her dreams, her ideas, her body, with another woman.

The hypocrisy was suffocating. Her trust, shattered into a million pieces.

Her phone rang. Ethan.

She stared at the screen, his smiling photo mocking her.

Let it ring.

She would not give him the satisfaction of her pain.

Not yet.

A new message from Chloe.

A selfie. Chloe, pouting, wearing Ava's favorite silk robe.

The one Ethan had bought her for their first anniversary.

"It's so soft. Ethan says it looks better on me."

Ava felt a fresh wave of nausea.

Chloe wasn't just taking her fiancé; she was erasing Ava.

Ava stood up, wiping her tears.

The pain was still there, a raw wound.

But beneath it, a cold fury was hardening into resolve.

Phoenix Solutions. The launch. Her escape.

It was the only way.

She would not let them win. She would not be a victim.

Ethan came home hours later, humming.

"Sorry I'm late, Peterson meeting ran over. Productive, though."

He tried to kiss her. She offered her cheek.

"You okay? You seem... quiet."

"Tired," Ava said. "Big day tomorrow. Final prep for the launch."

She managed a small, weary smile. He bought it.

He was too self-absorbed, too confident in his deception.

"Ethan," she began, her voice carefully neutral.

"That intern, Chloe. She seemed upset earlier. Is she okay?"

She watched his face. A flicker of something – surprise? Guilt? – crossed his features.

It was gone in an instant.

"Chloe? Oh, yeah. Just a bit overwhelmed, I think. New to the corporate world."

He waved a dismissive hand. "Nothing to worry about. Just a kid."

A kid he was sleeping with. A kid he was sharing Ava's life with.

The ease of his lies was chilling.

Ava let a single tear trace a path down her cheek.

"I just... I get so stressed before a launch. Everything feels magnified."

She needed him to see her as vulnerable, not suspicious.

His expression softened, the charming fiancé mask back in place.

"Hey, it's okay. It's going to be amazing. We're amazing."

He pulled her into a hug. She endured it.

Just then, Ethan's phone buzzed on the counter.

A text from "C."

Chloe.

He glanced at it, then quickly put the phone face down.

Too late. Ava had seen the preview.

"Emergency. Need you. xoxo"

"Damn it," Ethan muttered, grabbing his phone.

He walked into the bedroom, closing the door.

Ava heard his muffled voice, sharp and annoyed.

"Chloe, what did I tell you about texting me when I'm home? This is not the time."

He was scolding his mistress for her carelessness, not for the affair itself.

Silence. Then Chloe's voice, faint but audible through the door.

Crying. Fabricated distress.

"But Ethan, I'm scared. I think I'm... I might be..."

Her voice trailed off, a calculated, vulnerable plea.

Ava's blood ran cold.

Ethan's throat made a small, tight sound.

A moment later, the bedroom door opened.

He looked flustered, torn.

"Ava, I... something's come up. An emergency at NexusCorp. I have to go."

He grabbed his keys, not meeting her eyes.

"Don't wait up."

He was gone. Rushing to Chloe.

Ava stood alone in the silent penthouse, the truth a bitter poison in her veins.
