Chapter 4 Wrestling with Fear and Hope

My phone buzzed again, and the screen displayed his name, Callum Dane. I gazed at it, my fingers frozen, and my heart beat in a slow, painful way that felt like a warning. What have you been up to? The message said. Only four words, but they mean so much more than that.

I swallowed hard, and the lump in my throat got tighter. The last time I heard from him was months ago. He sent me a cold email regarding the hotel redesign, but it wasn't personal. His words now sounded like a whip cracking through the quiet.

My thumb hesitated for a moment, then slid to ignore. Not yet, I wasn't ready. I wasn't sure what to say that wouldn't break the weak threads I had sewn around my secret.

Callum. The man who ruled boardrooms and could break through barriers with a stare that could cleave glass. The billionaire with ice in his veins and fire under his skin. The man whose touch made me shake, but whose absence was like a chilly shadow that covered everything.

I walked around the flat, which was too small and quiet, and then the stillness screamed at me. What could I say to him? That I was afraid? That I was alone and carrying a life that wasn't just mine anymore? Or that I wanted him there so much, but I knew he was the last person I could trust?

There was another message, Juniper. Short. Hard.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. The tension was so bad that I felt like I was going to die. A storm was coming.

I looked out the window and didn't pick up the phone. The lights of the city looked like stars in the distance that you couldn't reach.

My body kept put, even though my intellect told me to run.

It felt secure to ignore him. But for how long?

The café was calm, a safe place for me to escape the noise in my head. As I sat down across from Lila, my oldest friend and the only one who could see through my armor, the smell of roasted coffee beans surrounded us.

Her eyes, warm and inquisitive, didn't spare a second.

"You look tired," she stated in a quiet but steady voice.

I smiled on purpose and traced the rim of my mug with my fingers. "It's been a long week."

She leaned in, her brows furrowed. "Something's not right. Tell me."

I hesitated because my secret was weighing me down. "Lila... I'm having a baby.

Her eyes got bigger, and she looked shocked for a second, then worried. "Why didn't you say anything before, Juniper?"

Because I'm scared. Callum Dane doesn't know, and if he did, everything would be different.

"I'm scared," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Now this isn't just about me."

Lila reached across and squeezed my hand. "You don't have to accomplish this by yourself. But you have to know, Callum? He's not just any guy. "People, rumors, and even destinies are under his control."

Her comments cut deep, bringing back the old fear that made me weak.

She said gently, "He's dangerous," and her eyes darkened. "Not the kind you fight by yourself."

I nodded and swallowed hard. I didn't think the truth would hurt as much as it did.

Lila's phone rang. She looked down, then back at me. "You need a plan." For you. For the baby.

I tightened my jaw because I knew the road ahead would not be easy.

I walked around my apartment, amid the peeling walls and the dusty shelves. The peaceful buzz of the city came through the cracked window.

This small life inside me was a secret fire that was both strong and weak.

I took out an old notebook that was full of drawings and aspirations of a future that no longer seemed assured. I started to make a list. Names, doctors, and locations to hide if things went wrong. It felt like a fight against the storm inside and outside with every step forward.

Fear was always with me, but hope, like a tiny ember, burned brightly beneath it.

I thought of the boy I had never met, the way his smile curved and the weight of his little hand in mine. Could I keep him safe? Could I trust Callum to be the father I needed, the man Lila told me to stay away from?

A loud, unexpected knock shook the doorframe.

I froze, and my heart hit my ribs hard.

Through the peephole, I could see Callum's familiar shape. He was tall, well-dressed, and had a look on his face that was impossible to read.

I didn't say anything.

He raised his hand and said in a calm, steady voice, "Juniper, we need to talk."

The air got thicker. The past was banging on the door. The future is waiting.

And I had no notion where this door would take me.

He was still there, standing just inside the door, that constant presence I couldn't get rid of. Callum Dane. He was tall and statuesque, and his fitted suit fit his broad shoulders like steel. With dark hair slicked back and eyes as piercing as a hawk's, he watched and waited.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, and my voice was sharper than I meant it to be.

He stepped forward at a leisurely, careful pace that made it clear he dominated every inch of space. "I'm here because you have my child."

I couldn't breathe. "Don't."

"Don't what?" Say no? "Don't believe it?"

I crossed my arms as my heart raced. I didn't want him to notice how scared I was. "I'm keeping us safe." You don't have the right to decide that.

Callum's jaw became tense. "I'm not here to have fun. I wish to take part. In all things.

I laughed, low and bitter. "You don't know what you're getting into." You know how to control, have power, and manipulate.

His eyes twitched, and there was a storm under that calm veneer. "I'm the only one who can keep you safe."

"Safe?" I spoke the same thing, my voice breaking. "You left me alone with this secret." What you gave me wasn't safe.

There were words that weren't spoken in the room. His intensity hit my barriers hard, but I stood my ground.

"I'm not asking," he said softly. "I'm telling."

"And I'm not going to." I looked him in the eye and stood my ground.

The stillness was dense, heated, and harsh for a long time.

Then he turned, and the floor felt heavy with the weight of his steps.

But he kept looking at me, scorching and uncompromising, promising he wasn't done.

I leaned against the wall, my heart still beating and his words echoing in my chest.

Seconds seemed to last forever. Then came the loud buzz of the buzzer.

When I opened the door, I saw a thin envelope on the welcome mat. It was a bright white color against the dreary concrete.

I ripped it open, my hands shaking.

A hotel key card with the Dane International emblem on it shone within.

No note.

I peered at it, my mind racing with questions: What was this? A request to come? A threat? Or a request?

The smell of leather and polished wood seemed to come off the card, bringing me back into a world I had attempted to leave behind.

There was no caller ID on my phone when it buzzed again.

I swallowed, caught between terror and fascination.

Callum's world wasn't just a setting; it was a trap, a promise, and maybe my only chance to keep the baby safe.

I cautiously closed the door, holding the key card in my hand.

The city lights outside flickered like secrets from far away, and I knew this was far from done.
