Chapter 5 The day he varnished

Chapter 5

LANDON

I squeeze the life out of the flowers that I am holding as I stare at the both of them kissing and throwing themselves on each other like they had been starved of each other.

My best friend, Arnold, and my childhood love, Lia.

After issuing Adeline the annulment letter, I drove to the airport as I had heard that Lia was going to be returning to the States that day. I guess Arnold beat me to it considering the scene unfolding in front of me.

"Hello." My voice is hoarse and practically void of emotions as I stare at them with scrutiny.

"Hi, Landon." Lia shrieks and hugs me briefly before disengaging but my glare lingers on Arnold's hand intertwined with hers.

"I didn't know you both were involved...." I trail off when Arnold's eyes widen and then his mouth opens.

"Oh, I did tell you my girlfriend would be returning next month, yeah? She's a month early." I stare at both of them, unable to wrap my head around the situation.

I didn't know the 'girlfriend' Arnold always talked about was the same lady I had been in love with and practically waited for making me not get married.

"Wow, I will be on my way then." I move back to my car when Lia grabs my hand.

"Of course not, you can follow us back to our apartment. Arnold has everything fixed up for me before I go to see my parents later." I shake my head in negativity as I look at my wristwatch-like I am running out of time.

"I would love to but I have to meet up with a client. Maybe some other time." I practically ran away hastily and slammed my car door immediately after I was inside, punching my airbag.

I am seething in rage and gritting my teeth as I make my way to the house when my secretary begins calling that someone has dropped a file I need to pick up.

I changed direction and headed to the office instead and on getting there, the file was the annulment letter that I had given Adeline. She had dropped it off at my office.

I head back to the house and call out her name from the living room.

"Adeline." I sat on my favorite single couch with legs crossed against each other while I lit a cigarette.

I am unable to control my emotions and I slam a glass cup into the wall.

"Adeline." If she wasn't so careful, she would barely face the consequences of my anger.

"Sir, she already left." I swerve to stare at my housekeeper for a few seconds.

"Left?"

"Yes, she left with her belongings." I stand up hastily with no idea why and make my way to her room.

It's empty, almost too empty like no one had ever stayed there.

There's no single trace of her, nothing at all and the silence is deafening.

I dial her number, but it goes straight to voicemail, and I bite the insides of my mouth.

I'm about to leave the room when my eyes fall on a plastic object on the floor.

I squint my eyes and pick it up and my eyes widen immediately.

A pregnancy test! A pregnancy test that is marked with double red lines shows that she is pregnant.

I dial her number again, and it goes straight to voicemail, and I call her father.

"Tell Adeline to get back here immediately," I say immediately. The call goes through, and I'm about to end the call when his voice comes in.

"Isn't Adeline supposed to be with you? When I paid you off, you said that you both had a contract." I stared at the phone in my hands as I hoped that what he was saying wasn't what I was hearing.

"She's not there?"

"No."

So this woman has gone on the run with my baby in her womb because it's most definitely my baby!

I dial another number immediately.

"Hey, Jack," I say as the line goes through and he answers immediately.

"I need you to search for someone for me. I'll forward all her details to you immediately."
