Chapter 4 Running

Jasmine's POV

I blinked like a faulty bulb. What did I just hear?

I pressed my back against the door, my breath catching in my throat. The voice in the next room was as clear as day. It was Lucas's.

"Really?" the other voice said.

"Yes. In two days. Once I'm Alpha, I'll finish them off. This marriage was just a delay tactic."

The words hit me like a silver dagger to the heart. I staggered back and held unto a table before I came crashing down. My vision blurred, my pulse pounded in my ears. I swallowed hard, but the lump in my throat wouldn't go away. It felt like I had swallowed a rock.

"This was for peace, for safety" I thought, gripping the fabric of my dress. "I sacrificed everything. my Dad trusted him."

My fingers trembled as I pressed a hand to my chest, willing my body to stay silent, to not betray my presence. Lucas had just sealed my people's fate.

My mind screamed for action, but my feet stayed rooted to the floor. Did he ever mean any of it? All the promises to my pack? The food they promised. The help in reconstruction of burnt houses? I always knew that deal was so good to be true.

A tear slipped down my cheek, but I clenched her jaw. No. I wouldn't break. Not here. Not now. There was still time. I could go home and tell my father what's to come. We could get help from neighboring packs. I know it's possible. Yes. All I had to do was go home.

But two days. I only had two days. Quickly I turned around and ran out of his room. Out of his chambers. I stopped in the hallway. Where should I go? What should I do? There was only place to go.

I ran upstairs. Was she asleep? I hoped not? She never sleep on time. She was always awake reading novels. Only she could help me now. Both in calming me down and helping me escape.

I was surprised to find no guards at her door but that was not going to hinder me from seeing her. I raised my hand to knock but was surprised to find her jar slightly ajar. Just like Lucas's. I raised an eyebrow. What was with today and slightly open doors?

I stood waiting. Thinking. She was the Luna. I couldn't. I mean I dare not come in without her knowledge. What is she using the toilet? Or in her private time or she was naked?

So I took a step back but when a thought rig through my head, I took a step forward. What if she was in the danger?

Without thinking, I burst into the Luna's room like a broken dam.

"Your highness!" I screamed to the high heavens. No one answered. That made me more worried than ever. I checked through all the rooms in her chamber but she was nowhere to be found. I felt like crying. I lost my weeks back and now the only mother figure in my life? Was I jinxed?

I began heading to the door to infirm the guards when I heard some indistinct chuckle. I narrowed my eyes. That sounded like the Luna. Then I went silent and listened. Not only was there some laughter but music. Okay what was going on?

I followed the sound of that to a wall. I tilted my head. Was she in the next room? But there was no room next door. It was just a wall. I touched the door and it moved away. My eyes flew wide. The wall away to reveal a room. What a secret room? I walked slowly into the room. I looked ahead and then I saw it. I clasped a hand over my mouth backing away slowly. Unknown to me, I had taken pushed a table and a flower vase came crashing down.

The laughter stopped and immediate they turned to me.

It was the Luna. She was in bed. Stark naked with her godson. Logan

"Jasmine!" the Luna yelled. Instantly I turned around and began to race for the door. I could hear footstep behind me as I tried to make my way out of the room.

"Jasmine come back here!" she barked. I got out her chambers and ran downstairs quickly. My heart thundered, threatening to stop. I stopped in the hallway, I didn't know where to go but I knew now was the perfect time to go home.

I ran straight to Scarlett's room.

"Your highness is anything wrong?" she jolted awake. I put a hand to her put and she stared at me with wide eyes. I could the thumping of boots outside her room. The Luna had summoned the guards to look for me. My room was upstairs.

I removed my hand. "What is it your highness?" she whispered with wide eyes.

"We have to leave?"

"Now?"

"Yes" and then I grabbed her hand and we left the maid quarters through the kitchen.

"Search everywhere! Lock the gates! You stay here!" a voice thundered outside the kitchen. I peeped through a keyhole to find a guard standing in front of the door.

"Your highness what are we going to do?" Scarlett whispered with eyes as wide as a security man's touch. She had sweat pouring from her pores.

"Shah" I put my hands to my lips and began to look around. My heart pounding, my eyes scanned the kitchen, there was no knife in sight. And even if there was, it would make a hell of a noise to get one. There was no frying pain or fork. Nothing was in sight.

My tears came to my eyes. In this the end of the road for me? To make matters worse, I could hear the heavy footstep of the army from up. Very soon they would be headed to the kitchen.

Still deliberating or whether to turn myself in or not, I spotted a dirty pot in the sink and a slow smile crept up to my lips.
