Chapter 5 Breaking free

The week that followed the gala was a blur of decisions, self-reflection, and unexpected encounters. Elena found herself replaying her conversation with Victor over and over again in her mind. The spark between them had been undeniable, but it was more than just attraction-it was the feeling of being seen, of being understood in a way that she hadn't experienced in years.

As she walked through the halls of the mansion the next morning, a strange sense of liberation settled over her. The days of hiding behind a façade of duty and obligation felt distant, like a lifetime ago. The business meetings, the court hearings, the demands of her estate-these things were still present, but now they didn't define her. She wasn't just a survivor; she was someone who was beginning to rediscover herself.

Victor's words haunted her in the best way. "You're ready for more." He had said it with such certainty, such conviction, that it felt like an invitation. An invitation not just to explore what was possible with him, but to explore what was possible within herself.

Elena had spent so long putting everyone else's needs before her own-first Julian's, then the business, then the estate. But what about her own needs? What did she want?

That afternoon, she found herself standing in front of a mirror once more. This time, she wasn't just admiring her reflection. She was questioning it, looking beyond the surface, beyond the polished appearance she had worked so hard to maintain. Who was Elena, really? Beyond the businesswoman, beyond the ex-wife, beyond the façade of strength?

As the days went on, Elena began to carve out time for herself, time she had never allowed before. She went for long walks in the gardens of her estate, the sunlight filtering through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground. It was during these walks that she allowed herself to simply be-to listen to her thoughts and embrace the quiet.

It was on one of these walks, as she wandered deeper into the estate's private gardens, that she came across a new guest-someone who had arrived without much fanfare. Maria, her assistant, had mentioned something about a new architect hired to work on the renovations of the estate's guest wing, but Elena hadn't thought much about it at the time.

Standing by the stone fountain at the heart of the garden was a man with dark, tousled hair, his back to her as he studied the layout of the land. Elena felt a pull of curiosity as she approached him, her heels clicking softly on the stone path. When he turned to face her, Elena was taken aback by the intensity of his gaze. He was tall, with a strong jawline and a demeanor that was both confident and relaxed. There was something in his eyes that felt like a challenge-like he was inviting her to step into uncharted territory.

"Mrs. Darnell," the man greeted her, his voice low and steady. "I hope I'm not interrupting."

Elena paused for a moment, unsure of what to say. She had no real reason to feel drawn to this man, yet there was an undeniable magnetism in the way he carried himself. Something about his presence stirred something inside her.

"No interruption at all," Elena replied, offering a smile that was both welcoming and cautious. "You must be the architect."

He nodded, his lips curling slightly into a smile of his own. "I am. Name's Gabriel Stone. It's an honor to meet you, Mrs. Darnell. I've heard a great deal about your work."

The way he said "honor" made Elena's heart skip a beat. It wasn't just a pleasantry-it felt sincere. And yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this man than met the eye.

"I hope you're finding the estate to your liking," she said, trying to steer the conversation toward business. But even as the words left her mouth, she realized that she didn't want to talk about business. She wanted to know more about him-about what lay beneath the surface of his calm exterior.

Gabriel studied her for a moment, and then his gaze shifted to the stone fountain beside them. "It's... impressive. Your estate. There's a certain energy here. It's unlike anything I've worked with before."

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Energy? You're the first person who's ever described it that way."

"I can sense it," he said, his voice taking on a more thoughtful tone. "There's a history here, a power that flows beneath the surface. I'm not sure how to explain it, but it's palpable."

For a brief moment, Elena felt the weight of his words settle over her. She had always known that the estate carried with it a certain weight-after all, it was the heart of her family's legacy-but Gabriel's perspective felt different. It was as though he saw something in this place that she hadn't fully acknowledged herself.

"You have a way with words, Gabriel," Elena said, her voice softening.

"Only when I'm speaking the truth," he replied with a small smile.

There was a flicker of something-something unspoken-between them. It wasn't overt, but it was there, like the spark before a fire.

Elena cleared her throat, forcing herself to return to the practicalities of the conversation. "Well, I trust you'll have everything you need for the renovations. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to let me know."

"I will," Gabriel said, his gaze lingering on her a moment longer than necessary. "And thank you for your time."

As Elena turned to leave, her heart was racing. She had no idea what had just happened-whether it was the intense chemistry she had felt or the weight of the conversation itself. But there was something in the air now, something electric. She had no intention of letting it go unanswered.

That evening, as she sat at her desk reviewing papers, Elena found herself distracted by thoughts of Gabriel. She wasn't ready to dive into another relationship, not after what Julian had put her through, but the pull she felt was undeniable. It was as though her own desires had awakened with a force she couldn't ignore.

For the first time in months, Elena allowed herself to entertain the thought of intimacy again-not just as an act, but as something deeper, something that could connect her to another person. It was a scary thought, one that made her heart flutter and her breath catch, but it was also exhilarating.

She wasn't sure what would happen next, but for the first time, she wasn't afraid to find out.
