Chapter 10 Ten

ASPEN VESPER

For many minutes, the two of them remained still; you would think they were in a movie that was paused because the watcher wanted to get used to the crazy plot twist they had just witnessed.

Aspen especially had no particular reaction. She could not even draw the strength to appreciate the freedom her face now had after days of being masked. All she did, with nothing but blankness on her face, was quietly reach for her mask. She pasted the mask against her face and walked out of the room as though she just didn't reveal her identity to Kailin Blackwood.

She also didn't bother to decipher what that moment meant to her or what her full-of-shit ex-mate felt about what just happened.

She just walked and walked until a crazy feeling in her heart forced her knees to bend. She fell to the floor and let go of her mask.

Her eyes were trained intently on the tiled floor, and with slightly shivering hands, she clutched her chest and tried to resist the burning in her chest. But that feeling prevailed, and soon, while she recalled the point-blank expression she briefly glimpsed on Kailin's face earlier, she recalled his betrayal, his refusal to recognise her despite the bits of mate energy that had been dissipating since she came to the palace and tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Aspen," Lance's gentle call became fuel to her sorrow. "What is it?"

A loud wail was all she could give in response. Her lips formed into ugly crying, she drowned herself in Lance's arms and cried till the scorching emotion in her soul became something she had no choice but to get used to.

KAILIN BLACKWOOD

The moment Doctor Sabrina walked out of the room, Kailin's heart began to ache. That feeling crushed him to the point that his eyes became teary and his knees gave in to the pull in his soul. But while he tried to survive that painful moment, he wondered for what reason he was suffering so terribly.

'Are you serious?' Lexus came crawling out again, this time, his presence was mightier.

"Wh-what?"

'That woman. Do you really not recognise her?'

"What are you on about, you stupid wolf?"

'How could you be this blind? Did that Raven bitch blind you?' Lexus cried. 'That was her! That was our mate! That is Aspen, whom you have been trying to forget so hard!'

"Wh-what?" Kailin called bullshit initially. But his mind went back to the moment the Doctor's mask fell to the ground. The woman's face was a blur in his mind, so he squinted his eyes as though she was right in front of him, but he still couldn't make out the details of her face.

Well, that was until Lexus smacked the back of his head with his supernatural force and grittedly said, 'Remember her, you fool. Remember the woman you have been pushing away.'

And Kailin did remember her.

The full details of the woman's face came to him clearly and despite the reddish scar that decorated her face, it became clear that the Doctor was indeed Aspen Vesper, the woman who walked out on him barely days to their mating ceremony without a solid reason other than a half-ass message about how she could not bear being with him again.

"Lexus," Kailin managed to speak within the intense pain making his skin shoot out veins, "you knew all this time? You knew who she was?"

'I did. Why?'

"That woman is not our mate! Do you know what she did to us? She left us, Lexus!" The more he raised his voice, the more his strength diminished, and soon, he crashed onto the floor and became useless for many minutes.

Lexus sighed. 'No matter how you try to convince yourself that she left you, it will not change the fact that you feel terrible for not chasing after her. Back then, you should have listened to that part of your soul that refused to accept that Raven betrayed us. But did you? No. All you did was reach for Raven Vesper all because she looks like our mate.'

"Stop it, Lexus," Kailin begged, his hands clutching his head to numb the intense pain splitting it apart. "Please."

'She is back now. Will you let her go again, Kailin?'

"She let me go first! I can't do it again! I can't let her break my heart again!" Kailin's eyes pooled harder and his lower body folded like a baby's.

'So what?' Lexus bitterly demanded. 'Are you going to get rid of her? Are you going to push her out?'

"Kailin?" Raven's smallish voice filled the room before Kailin could respond to his wolf's attempt to sound him out in the harshest way possible. "Kailin!" She rushed to his side and helped him up. "What happened?" she asked while looking around. "Where is the doctor? Did she- Is someone out there?! Help!"

"Raven, it's fine," Kailin managed to say while his ragged breath tried to steady. "I am fine."

"Are you sure?" she asked as she sat next to him. Her fingers found his chin, and with care, she asked again, "Are you sure you are fine? Should I get the doctor?"

"I said it is fine," he snapped at her.

"You don't have to take that tone with me." It was clear she didn't have the strength to snap back. "I was just concerned."

Kailin sighed. "I am sorry." He temporarily forgot about the insane realisation he had just encountered and faced her. "How are you feeling?"

"It's hard to tell. I'm still in a daze."

"Let me know if there's anything I could do to make you feel better."

"Just stay right by my side," Raven gently responded while her fingers grazed his hand. Their fingers intertwined, and she continued, "We are mates. Whatever happens, we will endure it together and triumph."

Yes, that was right. He had a life with Raven. She was his Luna and nothing would change that. Not even the unexpected return of the woman who stabbed his heart years ago.

"I will always be by your side," Kailin replied. But past the gentleness in his assuring sentence, something deep in his heart knew he was lying. He ignored that feeling and helped Raven get on her feet. "You should lay down. Have you eaten?"

"I don't have an appetite," she said.

"You should eat." On cue, one of the maids rushed into the room. "Get the Luna her dinner. Waste my time, and I'll feed you to my wolf." The warning frightened the maid who quickly rushed out.

Raven, on the other hand, chuckled. "You should tune down the way you threaten to kill people. One of these days, they'll take you seriously."

"They should. That way, they won't try funny things." He ensured she was well settled in the bed, adjusted the blanket and grabbed a stool to sit on. "You should rest well, my Luna."

She reached for his hand. "You are here. I will certainly rest well."

Kailin managed a smile but his desire to forget the earlier wretching moment failed him. As Raven caressed his hand and lovingly gazed at him, Aspen Vesper's face came up in his mind and he felt sick to his stomach. Certainly, he needed to get that woman out of his sight before she could wreck worse chaos in his life.

Once Kailin was done tucking Raven in for a good night's sleep, he decided to get rid of Aspen Vesper one way or the other. But while his mind debated the best way to do that, his feet started to go on a search for the woman. And when he found her, she was standing in the corridor not too far from Raven's room.

Perhaps she came back to perform her doctor duties one last time, Kailin thought.

"You," he called, his voice loud enough not to drag people's attention to them. The woman looked up and removed the hood shielding her face. Seeing her face again made his heart bleed, but he focused on what he was about to do. He grabbed her arm and, without mercy, he dragged her with him. She didn't contest the harshness of his grip. She didn't say anything either when he finally found a secret spot for them to speak.

"Aspen Vesper?" He bitterly questioned her identity. The woman hardened her gaze and refused to reply. He let go of her arm. "It is you, isn't it? How dare you crawl back here like the coward you are?" She still didn't say a word. "You walked away three years ago, so do the same right now. I don't care what you came here to do. By the time dawn meets us, make sure I do not sniff your presence at all."

"Or what?" she casually asked and walked away.
