Chapter 4 The Little Prophet

The Little Prophet

Matthew's POV

The meeting room is buzzing with senior members of the Night Howlers Pack. I sit at the head of the table, patiently listening to the ongoing discussion.

"Status of our current rogue situation is quite good now. The attacks outside the border have reduced, and we have also been able to establish more orphanages for the rogue pups who were abandoned by their parents," Liam reports while standing before the projector screen that shows the statistics of our pack's economic growth and the rates of decrease in rogue attacks. He is the Beta of my pack.

"It's all thanks to the Alpha's idea that more rogue pups will get shelter," Jordan, another senior comments, and the elders sitting in the meeting room stare at me with admiration.

Things are going fairly well for me as the new Alpha of this pack. It's not easy to rule a huge pack, and keep up its reputation as one of the strongest packs in the country. In fact, I did not want any part in this. But a year ago, my parents, the respected Alpha and Luna, died in a tragedy. So the responsibility naturally fell on my shoulder.

But I think my little sister, Charlotte, has it harder. She lost them at such a young age, and on top of that, she has to carry a secret that can put her in danger. Charlotte is a prophet, a rare one. Prophets were common centuries ago, and people believe that only someone with a divine connection to the Moon Goddess can have the powers to tell the future. My sister turns out to be the one and only who has that superpower.

"Rogue pups are just like any other shifter. They have a lot of potential, but no one to support them. So it's important that we invest on such potential," I reply in a firm voice. The rest nod in agreement.

"But we have one more pressing matter," Liam says, and smirks.

"What?"

"The future Luna of this pack," He replies, and I sigh. Not this again. This seems to be the tenth time I have been reminded about this.

"I agree with Beta Liam," Mrs. Dawson says, and gives me the look with her stern, old brown eyes that say 'When are you going to take this seriously?' She is one of our elders who handles the health administration.

Apparently, my Prophet sister predicted that I'll have a perfect mate who'll bring a bright future to this pack. Only the elders know about her powers, and once they heard of her prediction, they have been forcing me to attend more Mating Balls to find my mate.

They have been into the search too, playing cupid for me. But so far, no luck.

"It's just a damn prediction. Why are you all so serious about it?" I ask, frustrated with all this pressure for mating. I love Charlotte, but I don't believe in this prophecy shit. A man makes his own destiny, and I am carving mine with my efforts and diligence. The ones who rely on these predictions are just simply spineless, and the most cowardly creatures out there.

However, the rest of the pack wouldn't see it the same way if they knew about Charlotte's abilities. Her powers could put her in danger.

Knowing your or someone's future, it's a power those fools out there want to utilize.

So I pay close attention to her, and make sure she is under tight security most of the time. She might think of me as an overprotective brother, but I can't help it. She is the only family I have left, and if anything happens to her, I won't be able to live.

"Prediction or not, this pack needs a Luna. I am tired of it being run by someone with a penis. We need a woman who can nurture this pack, and also give us an heir. You can't be a mother now, can you?" She states in a straight face, and Liam snickers beside her. The rest try to hide their laughter. It sucks to have elders in a meeting because I can't even disrespect them by telling them to shut up.

For now, only the elders in this meeting, and Liam knows about my sister's secret. And I want to keep it that way.

"That's enough for today. We'll have this discussion later," I say and get up from my chair. My back feels stiff from sitting on it for straight two hours.

"Alright. But you can't run from this," Mrs. Dawson points at me in a warning, and everyone slowly departs from the room.

Cracking my joints, I walk up the stairs to check on Charlotte. It has become a daily habit now. The door to her room comes on display, and the weird faces of the yellow, bald emoji stickers stare back at me. I knock on the door, waiting to hear her footsteps. Minutes pass, but I don't hear any sound inside. Is she sleeping?

I would have heard her snores then. She snores quite loudly, so it's hard to not hear it. My chest tightens in worry, and turning the knob, I open the door. "Lotte?" I call her, but am greeted with silence in the room with no lights on. Shit!

"Liam!" I connect with my Beta through the pack link.

"Yes?"

"Lotte is missing. Send the search team immediately! Scan the entire pack grounds, even the main Junction." I order, my voice filled with concern. Fuck, Lotte. Where did you go?

"On it." He says, and I punch the wall in anger. I hope she is safe.

A while later, Liam reports back to me, "Alpha, we found her. But she is with a girl who doesn't belong to this pack."

"What?! Has she taken Charlotte captive?!" I growl.

"Looks like it."

"Fine, send the security squad, and surround her. I want her alive." I command. Whoever this girl is, she is going straight to the dungeon for hurting my sister.
