Ava`s POV
I kept glancing nervously at him, the man that claimed he wasn't a rouge. I saw it, the red eyes before his wolf turned back to a human. I kept fiddling with the fork. It was my favorite seafood, but I couldn't seem to find the appetite. I was never acquitted by our hosts, so it was quite uncomfortable for me.
I excused myself to the restroom, but I went out to find him standing by the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest. "I thought you might have attempted to run", he said plainly and tried to hold my hand, but I slapped it away.
"I appreciate that you saved me, but who the hell are you?"
He turned his head to face me, our noses only a few inches apart. I blushed furiously and looked away, hiding my embarrassment.
"I am your true mate".
I laughed hysterically. He watched me with an unreadable expression, but I didn't mind, it just sounded like he had had too much to drink. Derek was my true mate. I was sure of it. He had marked me two nights ago before... his tragic demise.
"I know you can feel the mate bond too, quit pretending otherwise" he yapped at me, clearly annoyed by my disbelieving reaction.
"I do not feel anything! Except that you kept surfacing in my damn dreams before I met you".
I regretted the words as they left my lips; it was as if I admitted to being his mate. He grimed foolishly at me and turned to leave. "Come on Ava, the dead man was your uncle". Another ridiculous thing to say. I thought inwardly, I was the only Zuberian wolf left alive. How could I have an uncle I never knew?
I grudgingly followed him back to the funeral room. My heart skipped a beat and I stopped in my track when I saw a new seated guest, none other than my husband, Ryan Denkov. He saw me too but looked away. Fear gripped me, was he going to gut me right here? In front of a large crown in a funeral house, I guess I am finally dying alongside my unknown uncle, as the dashingly handsome rouge had said.
"Ava!" I heard his melodious voice call out my name. He held my hand, and we got back to our seats. I kept glancing nervously in Ryan's way, hoping my fears would not happen.
"My name is Edrick", I turned to face him with a questionable glare. Wasn't he aware of my relationship with Ryan? "If his presence is making you uncomfortable, we can leave". I wasn't going to pretend. I told him I wanted to leave, and breathing the same air as the very man that almost decapitated me a few days ago was suffocating enough.
We were about to get into the car when I stopped in my tracks and called out his name naturally: "Edrick, who are you? Why did you save me? What the hell is going on"? I saw his eyes roam my neckline, the love bite marks had almost faded now, and he mirrored his emotion as usual and spoke in monotones.
"I am your true mate. I saved you because I couldn't allow our bloodline to become extinct and what is happening is me waiting for you to love me back".
This time around, I didn't laugh, his Stoic emotion showed seriousness. How could a rouge be my mate?
"I know what you are thinking, Ava, I am not a rouge, I am of Zuberian descent like you, so are the other wolves in my pack. It is the moon goddess's blessing on us, which your family preferred to hide as a curse".
It was all too smooth to be lies. What do I know about my kind? Only the few lines in the history books and my father's few mentions of how sacred it is to keep it hidden from the world, I grew up with the mastery of how to keep my eyeballs a neutral wolf.
"Let us make a deal. "I will marry you in exchange for claiming back my father's pack and getting my revenge", I offered.
"I am not making deals with you Ava; I will wait it out till your real affection shows up for me".
Frustration welled up in me, he knew I was only ready to use him. How could I confidently fall in love when Derek's love for me got him killed? We stood there in silence, as the world kept moving past us. I had a lot of questions, but my mind was too muddled up to pick out the best.
"Listen, I know it is all overwhelming for you. "I will tell you all you want to know...if you ask". His words miraculously sounded therapeutic. A few days ago he was so disgusted by my mere appearance, but today, he sounded like a different man entirely. He looked so vulnerable; his intimidating aura seemed to have somehow vanished.
"Can we go home now?" I said, pleadingly, which he concurred with. We got into the car and were about to drive out when I saw Ryan standing in our way. I was right; he hadn't given up on killing me. I shouted at Edrick to speed up, but instead he slowed down and stopped the car. I was bewildered. Was he handing me over to Ryan now?
"I see you have finally seduced your mother's killer, the very doctor who harvested her kidney for Pamela's sister".
I heard Ryan shout mockingly. I waited desperately for Edrick to deny it, but he just wore a guilty expression. I felt a lump in my throat and started coughing. He tried to pat my back, but I yanked his hand. My hand balled into a fist and I opened it to let out my claw. I was going to kill him, I would kill them all, my ex-husband and this pretentious rouge bastard. I would have their heads, I swear.
I felt a sharp jab in my neck and the world suddenly turned blank. Is this meant to be my end?
