The forest was quiet, almost too quiet. Sera could hear the crunch of her boots in the snow, the soft whispers of wind stirring the treetops, but there was no wildlife, no creatures stirring. It was as though the entire world had fallen silent in anticipation of something-something she couldn't quite grasp.
Lucian walked beside her, his pace steady and confident, the wolves trailing just behind them, watching her every move. Her heart still raced, her breath shallow as she tried to process everything that had happened since she first arrived in the town. One minute, she was a regular woman looking for peace and a new life; the next, she was thrust into a world filled with powerful wolves, a hidden pack, and a strange pull in her blood that she couldn't deny.
She glanced sideways at Lucian. His expression was unreadable, but his presence was commanding, like he was holding something back-something dangerous.
"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice breaking the silence that had settled over them. "What's going to happen?"
Lucian's eyes flicked to her, just for a moment, before he returned his gaze to the dark path ahead. "We're going to the heart of the pack," he replied, his voice smooth and low. "It's the only place that's safe for you right now."
Sera's brow furrowed. "Safe? From what? You said the pack was restless. Why? What are they after?"
He didn't answer immediately. His jaw tightened as he walked, his expression darkening. The wolves around them shifted, a low growl emanating from one of them, but Lucian gave them a sharp look, silencing them. It was as though his mere presence commanded respect, and for the first time, Sera felt the weight of his power-not just as a man, but as a leader.
"We don't have time to explain everything right now," Lucian said, his tone colder than before. "But I promise you, Sera, you're not just a human. You're part of this world whether you're ready for it or not. And when they realize that... they won't stop until they've got you."
Sera shivered at the vehemence in his voice, the danger that hung in the air. She wanted to ask more questions, wanted to know what he meant by part of this world and why the pack was hunting her, but something told her that pressing him for answers now would only make things worse.
Instead, she stayed silent and followed his lead, the pull in her chest growing stronger with each step deeper into the woods.
It wasn't long before they came upon a clearing, and what she saw there took her breath away.
The wolves, who had been walking with them, broke off, disappearing into the shadows of the trees. Sera's eyes widened as she looked at the structure before her-an ancient stone building, half-veiled in mist. It looked old, older than anything she'd ever seen, but there was something unmistakably powerful about it, as if the very earth around it was alive. The moonlight seemed to catch the edges of the stone, casting long shadows across the ground, and the wind carried the faintest scent of pine and earth.
"This is the pack's home," Lucian said, his voice softer now, almost reverential. "We call it the Heartstone."
The Heartstone. The name alone sent a ripple of something strange through her, a flicker of recognition in the back of her mind. But there was no time to process it.
Lucian stepped forward, his presence commanding the wolves that had been lurking in the shadows. One by one, they emerged, each one more imposing than the last. They were not just wolves-Sera could feel it now. They were something more. Something ancient, and powerful.
And they were staring at her.
Lucian turned to face her, his eyes intense and steady. "This is where it all begins, Sera," he said, his voice low. "The pack's heart beats here. And now, so does yours."
Sera opened her mouth to ask what he meant, but before she could, the ground seemed to vibrate beneath her feet, and a low rumble echoed through the clearing. The wolves began to shift, their forms rippling as they transformed from their massive, wolf-like shapes into human forms. The first one to shift was a tall man with dark hair and sharp features-Kai, the one who had looked at her with such intensity earlier.
His eyes were still a deep, golden hue, but now he was standing before her in human form, wearing only a pair of pants, his broad chest exposed. There was no mistaking the power radiating from him. He was the same as the wolves, but in this form, he was more unsettling. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before he stepped aside to make room for the others.
Sera stood frozen, unable to tear her eyes away from Kai, as the rest of the wolves followed suit. Each one shifted, revealing powerful, muscled bodies and features that seemed to belong to another world altogether.
And then, there was Lucian.
He, too, shifted.
But unlike the others, his transformation was slow, controlled. His body rippled with strength, his eyes glowing even brighter as his hair darkened and lengthened. When he finally stood before her in human form, his body was lean but powerful, his muscles sharp and defined. His eyes locked with hers, and for the first time since they met, Sera saw something in him-something raw, something that made her heart beat faster.
Lucian was a leader. A king among wolves.
The air between them seemed to hum, charged with an undeniable electricity, and Sera's pulse quickened. She wasn't sure if it was fear, attraction, or something else entirely, but she couldn't ignore the pull she felt toward him. It was like gravity, something deep and undeniable.
One of the other wolves-Talon, she remembered-stepped forward. His eyes gleamed with a predatory intensity. "Lucian, is she ready?" he asked, his voice laced with a hint of challenge.
Lucian's eyes flicked to him, his jaw tightening. "She's not ready for this," he replied, but there was an edge to his words that made Sera's stomach flip. "None of this is easy. But we don't have a choice anymore."
Talon growled, but didn't push further. Instead, he looked at Sera with an unsettling grin. "So, the Luna finally arrives," he said, his voice smooth and mocking. "Let's see if she's as special as you say, Lucian."
Sera's blood ran cold. Luna? What did that mean? She wanted to ask, wanted to demand answers, but the words caught in her throat. She couldn't stop the way her heart raced, the way her body seemed to respond to the tension in the air.
Lucian stepped toward her, closing the space between them. "You have to understand, Sera," he said softly, his voice almost gentle now. "There's more to being a part of this world than you know. You can't run from it anymore. You're one of us now. Whether you accept it or not."
The pull inside her intensified, and for a moment, Sera didn't know if she wanted to run or surrender to it.
But she couldn't back away now. Not when the pack was watching. Not when the truth was finally within reach.
