Chapter 6 The Edge Of Control

Valentina sat in the dimly lit training room, her fingers still curled around the dagger Adrian had handed her. The weight of his question echoed in her mind.

If I let you go now, would you still run? Or would you stay and fight?

She wanted to say she'd still run. She wanted to believe she'd take any chance to escape. But doubt had started to creep in. Every lesson, every strike, every moment under Adrian's scrutiny was changing something inside her.

She had come here as a prisoner. But now, she was becoming something else.

She exhaled sharply, shaking off the thoughts as she rose to her feet. The flickering overhead light cast long shadows against the stone walls. Adrian was gone, leaving her alone with her thoughts. But she had no doubt he was watching, he was always watching.

Footsteps echoed from the hallway. She tensed, gripping the dagger tighter. When the door swung open, it wasn't Adrian.

It was Marco.

The older man, Adrian's second-in-command, leaned against the doorway with an unreadable expression. "You're improving."

Valentina studied him warily. Marco had been silent for the most part, always lingering in the background, observing. He wasn't as openly cruel as Adrian, but she never trusted men who spoke little. Silence hid dangerous thoughts.

"That depends on who you ask," she muttered, wiping the sweat from her brow.

Marco stepped closer, his gaze flicking to the dagger in her hand. "Do you know why Adrian is training you?"

Her jaw tightened. "Because he enjoys control."

A small smirk tugged at Marco's lips. "Partly true. But not the full reason."

She frowned. "Then what?"

Marco hesitated for a moment before answering. "He's testing you."

Valentina swallowed. "For what?"

"To see if you're worth keeping."

The words sent a chill down her spine. "Keeping? As what?"

Marco shrugged. "That depends on you."

Her heart pounded, a mix of fear and fury burning inside her. "I don't belong to him."

"Maybe not now. But let's see how long you keep telling yourself that."

With that, Marco turned and left, leaving Valentina standing in the flickering light, her grip tightening around the dagger.

********

The next morning, Adrian summoned her.

She was led to his office by two guards, her pulse steady but her mind alert. The room was bathed in the golden morning light, the floor-to-ceiling windows revealing a sweeping view of the city below. The scent of leather and faint cigar smoke lingered in the air.

Adrian sat behind his desk, dressed in a crisp black button-down, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His piercing gaze locked onto her the moment she entered.

"Sit."

She remained standing. "Why am I here?"

A flicker of amusement crossed his face. "You always need a reason?"

"When it involves you, yes."

His smirk deepened, but there was an edge to it. "Fine. Let's get to it. You've been learning quickly."

She crossed her arms. "And?"

"And I think it's time for a real test."

A cold sensation crawled up her spine. "What kind of test?"

Adrian leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. "There's a man who betrayed me. He sold information to my enemies, and now he's hiding in one of the clubs I own."

She narrowed her eyes. "What does this have to do with me?"

Adrian picked up a small black box from his desk and tossed it toward her. She caught it, glancing down warily before opening it.

Inside was a sleek knife. Smaller than the one she had been training with, but just as deadly.

She looked up at him. "You want me to kill him?"

Adrian's gaze darkened. "No. Not yet. I want you to find him. Get close to him. And when the time comes, you'll decide whether he deserves to live or not."

Her stomach twisted. "You think I'll just go along with this?"

Adrian stood, rounding the desk until he was just inches from her. He reached out, tilting her chin up with two fingers.

"I think," he murmured, "that you're more like me than you want to admit."

She jerked away from his touch. "You're wrong."

His smirk didn't waver. "Prove it."

**************

That evening, Valentina found herself in the middle of one of Adrian's high-end clubs, the bass from the music thrumming through the floor. The dim lighting cast seductive shadows over the dance floor, and the scent of expensive cologne and liquor filled the air.

She was dressed for the occasion, Adrian had made sure of it. A sleek black dress that hugged her curves, stilettos that made her legs look longer, and a thin blade strapped to her thigh.

She felt like she was walking into a trap.

And maybe she was.

Her target, a man named Luis Moreno, was somewhere in this club. Her job was to find him. To gain his trust. To decide whether he lived or died.

She scanned the room, her pulse steady despite the chaos around her. Her training had taught her to see through distractions, to focus only on what mattered.

Then, she spotted him.

Luis was seated in a VIP section, a drink in his hand, his eyes scanning the room with paranoia. He was nervous. Good.

Valentina took a deep breath and made her way toward him. She could feel Adrian's eyes on her from across the club, he was watching. Testing her.

She reached the VIP section, catching Luis's gaze. She offered him a slow, teasing smile. "Mind if I join you?"

His eyes flicked over her, assessing, before he grinned. "How could I say no?"

She slid into the seat beside him, the knife pressing lightly against her thigh.

The game had begun.

*************

Across the club, Adrian watched.

His fingers drummed against the table, his gaze locked on Valentina as she played her part. She was sharp, calculated. Every move she made was deliberate, every glance perfectly placed.

She was dangerous.

And for the first time in a long time, Adrian felt something unexpected coil in his chest.

Intrigue.

She wasn't just surviving anymore.

She was becoming something more.

And that both excited him and made him wonder just how far she would go before she realized she had already crossed a line she could never come back from.
