Chapter 6 What Gives You The Authority

Madelyn shoved the picture back into Jason's hands. "Did you really go that far and have someone tail me? Next time you're curious about something, just ask. There's no need to jump through hoops."

Jason's sharp gaze grew even harsher as he glared at Madelyn. "I didn't do that. You're not worth the hassle."

He had only ended up with the pictures, clueless about who had dropped them on him.

The icy look in Jason's eyes hit her like a slap.

Madelyn had lived with the ache in her chest for so long, it had almost dulled to nothing. She said flatly, "Are we going in or what? Stop wasting my time."

That was the moment Jason finally noticed she wasn't dressed like her usual self. She had on a bold red dress that stood out.

He had never cared for flashy outfits on women. That was why Madelyn normally stuck to soft tones-elegant and demure.

But right now, with the wind teasing her dress and lifting her hair ever so gently, there was something striking about her.

His jaw tensed a little. He muttered, "If you regret it, I can still give you a chance."

"Relax. I don't regret a thing," Madelyn shot back instantly, her tone edged with impatience. "Anyway, I wouldn't dream of standing in the way of your happy ending. Fingers crossed your darling gets that divorce soon so you two can finally ride off into the sunset." A smirk tugged at her lips, full of bite.

Jason's expression clouded over in an instant.

He said nothing and walked straight into the courthouse.

They took care of the paperwork and picked a date a month out, after the cooling-off period, to finalize the divorce.

As the divorce process kicked off, Madelyn breathed a sigh of relief. She slid into the white Audi Daniel had loaned her and drove off.

Not only did she walk away without a word, but she didn't even look back at Jason.

Jason's face tightened as he watched the Audi vanish around the corner. It was only after that he made his way back to his own car.

Once she left the courthouse, Madelyn headed straight for Jason's place.

When she had left a few days ago, she only grabbed a suitcase with the basics. However, there were still some work things she had to pick up.

The moment she walked in, she noticed two maids tidying up the living room, chatting away.

"Wait, so they actually planned to divorce? And Mrs. Miller suggested it?"

"Stop calling her Mrs. Miller. They're close to splitting up!"

"A small-town girl really doesn't know what's good for her! So many women would give anything to marry a guy like Mr. Miller, and she just had a meltdown and walked away. She'll regret it sooner or later!"

Madelyn cleared her throat, making sure they heard, and stepped into the living room.

The maids went quiet right away, realizing they'd been caught, but they didn't seem scared. Instead, they shot her looks of disdain.

Madelyn spoke up. "Just because you work for an illustrious family like the Millers, you think that makes you important? Do you really believe gossiping behind people's backs won't cost you your job?"

The maids were taken aback at first but quickly regained their composure. They figured Madelyn was just trying to scare them. After all, she was about to divorce Jason and had no power to fire them.

As Madelyn started up the stairs, she continued, "The divorce isn't even over, and you're already showing me disrespect. What, you think you'll have a chance at taking my place once I'm gone?"

The maids' eyes went wide with fear.

"We're sorry, Mrs. Miller! That wasn't our intention!"

"We were just kidding! How could we not show you respect?"

At that moment, the door swung open.

"Who were you calling Mrs. Miller?"

Jason stepped in from outside, a cold air following him. It was clear he had overheard everything, and his cold stare landed on Madelyn.

"Do you honestly think you're still Mrs. Miller? What gives you the authority to lecture the Miller family's staff?"
