Chapter 2 A Shadow That Follows

Alina stepped out of "Vortex" and into the cold Manhattan night, her breath coming in uneven bursts. The neon lights of the club still flashed behind her, but the electricity that had crackled in the air inside was nothing compared to the storm raging in her chest.

Damon Cross.

Even now, his name sent a shiver down her spine. The way he had looked at her, the warning in his voice-it should have been enough to scare her away. But instead, it "intrigued" her.

She pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders, trying to shake the lingering effect of his presence. This was insane. She was "nobody" in his world. Just another girl who had walked into the wrong place at the wrong time.

And yet, something told her it wasn't over.

She turned down the street, hailing a cab. The moment she slid into the back seat, her phone vibrated in her purse.

Jenny.

Alina sighed, debating whether to answer. Jenny had practically "abandoned" her there, and she wasn't in the mood to hear her slurred apologies.

Still, she picked up.

"What the hell, Jenny?" she snapped. "You ditched me for some random guy, and-"

A low chuckle.

Alina froze.

The voice on the other end wasn't Jenny's.

It was deep. Slow. Calculated.

"You left in a hurry."

Her heart "stopped."

She gripped the phone tighter. "Who is this?"

A pause. And then-

"You already know."

Her blood turned to ice. "Damon."

Her mouth went dry. How did he get her number?

"You shouldn't have been there, Alina." His voice was smooth, but beneath it was something darker. Something possessive. "That world isn't for you."

She swallowed hard, forcing herself to sound composed. "I didn't realize I needed permission."

He chuckled, but there was no humor in it. "Careful, sweetheart." The word sent an unexplainable heat through her veins. "You don't want to play games with me."

A strange mix of fear and defiance bubbled in her chest. "Then why are you calling me?"

Silence.

Then, in a voice so low it sent chills down her spine, he said, "Because I don't like unfinished business."

Before she could respond, the call disconnected.

Alina stared at the screen, her pulse hammering.

What the hell had she just gotten herself into?

"The Next Day"

Alina had barely slept.

Damon's words had played on repeat in her mind, keeping her restless. She told herself she was overthinking it, that it was just an arrogant billionaire throwing his weight around.

But deep down, she knew better.

She stepped onto the campus of NYU, trying to push the night before out of her mind. The normalcy of her college routine was a sharp contrast to the "dark, dangerous world" she had stepped into at "Vortex."

"Alina!"

She turned to see her best friend, Sophie, jogging toward her. Unlike Jenny, Sophie was the responsible one. She had been Alina's rock since freshman year-always levelheaded, always watching out for her.

"You look like you've seen a ghost," Sophie said, eyeing her. "Rough night?"

Alina forced a smile. "You have no idea."

Sophie linked arms with her. "Tell me everything over coffee."

---

Thirty minutes later, they sat in a quiet café just off campus, Alina stirring her latte absentmindedly.

"So let me get this straight," Sophie said, narrowing her eyes. "You went to "Vortex" with Jenny, ended up in a "VIP section", and locked eyes with "Damon freaking Cross "?"

Alina exhaled. "Yeah, pretty much."

Sophie stared at her like she had grown two heads. "Alina. Do you know who he is?"

"I've heard the rumors," Alina admitted.

Sophie leaned in. "They're not just rumors. That man is "dangerous." He owns half of Manhattan, and the other half either works for him or fears him." She hesitated. "Some say he has... connections. The kind that makes people disappear."

Alina swallowed. "That's just speculation."

Sophie gave her a pointed look. "Then why did he "Call you?"

Alina had no answer for that.

Her phone buzzed again. Another unknown number.

She stared at it, her pulse spiking.

"Is that him?" Sophie whispered.

Alina hesitated. Then, against her better judgment, she answered.

A deep voice slid through the line. "We need to talk."

Alina sat on the edge of the park bench, gripping her coat as the cool evening wind swept through the city.

This was insane. She should have ignored the call, deleted his number, and walked away.

But here she was. "Waiting."

A black car pulled up to the curb, sleek and unmistakably expensive. The back door opened, and "Damon Cross" stepped out.

He was even more imposing in daylight. Dressed in a dark overcoat, his suit perfectly tailored, he looked like he owned everything in sight. And in a way, he probably did.

Alina's breath caught as he approached, his presence suffocating.

"You actually came," he mused, his eyes scanning her face like he was committing every detail to memory.

She lifted her chin. "You didn't really give me a choice."

He smirked. "Smart girl."

She crossed her arms. "What do you want?"

Damon's expression darkened. "To make sure you understand something." He stepped closer, his voice lowering. "You stepped into my world last night. That was a mistake."

Her heart pounded, but she held his gaze. "Then why do you care?"

He tilted his head, studying her. "Because you interest me."

A slow shiver ran through her.

Damon reached into his coat and pulled out a folded envelope. He held it out to her.

"What's this?"

"A job offer."

Alina's brows furrowed. "Excuse me?"

Damon smirked. "I need a new personal assistant."

She laughed, a breathless, disbelieving sound. "You're joking."

"Do I look like a man who jokes?"

Her stomach flipped. "Why me?"

His gaze turned unreadable. "Because I don't trust many people. And now that you've seen more than you should... I'd rather keep you close than let you wander into the wrong hands."

She froze.

He was protecting her.

Or "controlling" her.

"Take the offer, Alina," he murmured, his voice a lethal promise. "Because if you don't... someone else might make a different kind of offer."

Her blood ran cold.

This wasn't just a job.

It was a "warning."

And something told her that once she stepped into Damon Cross's world, there would be "no way out."
