The streets of Hollow Creek seemed impossibly quiet as she walked through them, the familiar sights of the marketplace and the town square now looking alien, as if they were part of another world. The weight of Kael's warning pressed down on her chest, but the question that kept rising in her mind was why. Why her? What was it about her that had drawn the forest's attention? And why did Kael seem so desperate to protect her-if that was even what he was doing?
She reached her small cottage, the door creaking open as she stepped inside. The warmth of the fire greeted her, but it did little to ease the chill that had settled deep within her. She closed the door softly behind her, locking it, and leaned against the wood, trying to steady her breathing.
Her fingers instinctively went to the pendant around her neck. The ancient symbol carved into the stone gleamed in the firelight, and she shivered at the memory of the way Kael had looked at it. It wasn't just any pendant. It was tied to something more-something ancient and powerful.
Suddenly, a knock on the door broke the silence, making Araya jump. Her heart raced, and she quickly moved toward the door, trying to calm herself. Who could it be at this hour? There was no one she expected, no one she wanted to see. But as she opened the door, she found herself face-to-face with a familiar, though unwelcome, visitor.
Arius.
His dark eyes, always sharp with purpose, met hers. "Araya," he said, his voice low and steady. "We need to talk."
She crossed her arms over her chest, an instinctual barrier. "About what?" she asked, trying to hide the unease she felt at his sudden appearance.
Arius stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his presence filling the small space like an overbearing shadow. "About the forest," he said simply, his gaze never leaving hers. "You've been out there again, haven't you?"
Her breath caught in her throat. How did he know?
"You don't need to answer that," Arius continued, his voice carrying an edge of frustration. "I can feel it. The pull is getting stronger. And so is the danger."
Araya felt the heat of her pulse rising as her hands trembled slightly. She didn't want to discuss this, didn't want to even acknowledge that her life was being pulled into something she couldn't understand. But Arius had a way of cutting through her defenses, getting straight to the heart of things.
"What do you mean by danger?" she asked cautiously, her voice barely a whisper.
He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as though trying to decide how much to tell her. "The Binding is more than just some old legend, Araya. It's real. And the wolves-they are real. The Alpha has already begun the hunt, and they won't stop until they find you."
Her stomach twisted at the mention of the wolves. Kael had warned her of them too, but she hadn't fully understood what that meant. Now, standing here in front of Arius, the gravity of his words sank into her.
"The Alpha?" she repeated. "Who is he? What does he want with me?"
Arius's expression darkened. "I wish I knew. But whoever he is, he's not someone you want to meet. The forest is awakening, Araya. The wolves are stirred, and there's a force at work here-something that's been dormant for centuries. And you... you are at the heart of it."
A chill ran down her spine as Arius's words hit her like a storm. The Alpha, the wolves, the Binding-all of it was connected to her. But how? Why?
"You can't keep running from this," Arius said, his tone softening slightly. "The forest has chosen you, and soon, there won't be a place in this world where you can hide from it. It's time for you to understand what's really happening."
Araya swallowed, trying to gather her thoughts. "What do you want me to do?" she asked quietly. "What am I supposed to do with all of this?"
Arius's gaze softened, but there was no comfort in it. "Go to the heart of the forest. Find the clearing. You'll find answers there. It's the only place where the Binding can be undone, or sealed. But you'll need to be ready. The wolves won't wait forever."
Before Araya could respond, Arius turned, heading for the door. "We'll be watching," he said over his shoulder. "Don't make the same mistake again, Araya. Don't wait too long."
As he left, the door clicking shut behind him, Araya stood frozen in the middle of her cottage, her mind racing. The heart of the forest. The clearing. The Binding. The wolves. Every piece of the puzzle was there, but none of it made any sense.
She felt the pendant burn against her skin, as though it, too, was calling her to the forest, to whatever waited there. She didn't know if she was ready for this, for the truth that she feared was hiding just beyond the trees. But as the night grew darker and the wind howled outside, she knew there was no turning back.
She had to go.

The Decision
The next morning, Araya stood at the edge of the forest once again, the air thick with the promise of something to come. Every instinct in her told her to turn back, to return to the safety of Hollow Creek and forget everything that had happened. But deep down, she knew that wasn't an option. The forest was calling her, and the wolves were waiting.
With one last look at the village behind her, Araya stepped forward, into the unknown. And as she did, the earth beneath her feet seemed to tremble, as though the forest itself was acknowledging her presence.
The Binding had begun.
