Chapter 5 Betrayal in a Kiss

The night market vibrated with an almost feverish energy. The lights hung like floating lanterns, the air smelled of spices, alcohol, and bodies pressed together. It was one of those nights where anything seems possible, where the heat rises to your skin and you forget about tomorrow.

Lila walked beside Aroon, his laughter carrying her like a current. He was looser than ever, more charming, more confident. And she, although her mind was floating in shadows, let herself be carried away.

When he took her hand to walk through the crowd, her skin reacted. She felt the warmth of his palm, the firmness of his fingers, and something inside her ignited. Not out of surprise. Not out of tenderness. But because of that very physical energy he emanated effortlessly.

"Come," he said with a crooked smile, and dragged her to the center of the square, where the bustle was denser and the lights dimmer.

Lila barely had time to think. Under the red lanterns, amid the scent of cinnamon and sweet smoke, Aroon stopped.

"There's something I have to do," he whispered, and kissed her.

The kiss wasn't a shy touch. It was deep, firm, full of suppressed desire. His lips molded to hers as if they'd been made to meet. His tongue sought hers hungrily, and her body pressed against Lila's with devastating ease.

And she... felt.

Heat rose from her chest to her belly below. Her breathing became ragged, her legs trembled slightly. She felt her body respond, something wet and electric rush through her without permission. It wasn't indifference. It wasn't emptiness. It was desire. Brutal, sudden, uncomfortable.

And precisely because of that... she pulled away.

Because the intensity of the moment shook her. It wasn't that she hadn't felt. It was that what she felt overwhelmed her. And not because of Aroon. But because of what that kiss stirred, what it meant, and what it didn't.

He looked at her, his lips parted, his eyes shining.

"So...?" he asked softly, with a certainty that sought confirmation.

Lila didn't respond immediately. Her pulse was racing, and she still felt the dampness between her legs, her skin flushed.

"It's not bad..." she whispered, with brutal honesty. "It's just not where I want to stay."

Aroon's smile faltered slightly, like a candle on the verge of going out.

"With me?"

Lila lowered her gaze. She didn't say yes. But she didn't say no either.

Thanom had seen them from afar.

She had followed Lila without knowing why, like someone following a hunch they don't want to listen to. She stopped before reaching the square, just as the kiss happened. She didn't see the entire gesture, but it was enough. Enough to feel something tighten in her chest.

It wasn't jealousy. It was something else. A kind of betrayal that had no name, because there weren't even any promises yet. Only glances, silences, touches that burned too close to the soul.

He didn't wait to see more. He went to the beach, as always.

When Lila found him, the breeze was colder, the night denser.

Thanom was sitting on the sand, his arms resting on his knees, his eyes on the horizon.

She approached without speaking. She sat next to him, and for a moment she said nothing. She just looked at him.

"Can I talk to you without you running away?" she asked finally.

Thanom didn't move, but his voice was clear.

"Say it."

"I don't want to lie to you. The kiss with Aroon... it did things to me. My body reacted. I won't deny it. But..."

He turned his face, his eyes fixed on hers.

"But?"

"It wasn't him who made me tremble when I walked away." It was thinking of you.

Thanom looked at her as if a new world had opened up in her words.

"And what do we do with that?"

Lila didn't respond. Instead, she leaned slowly toward him, a new clarity in her gaze. It wasn't doubt. It was need.

When their lips met, there was no room for right or wrong. Only a slow, urgent fire. And amidst the sea and sand, she clung to him as if she'd finally found the place where she truly wanted to stay.
