It pulsed deep inside her, tugging at her in ways she couldn't control. Every time Kian's presence neared, the pull became stronger, more insistent. Her wolf snarled in frustration, fighting against the pull, but it wasn't enough to erase the undeniable connection.
Her fists clenched at her sides, nails biting into her palms as she tried to quell the conflicting emotions roiling inside her. Her heart raced, an unsteady rhythm that echoed in her chest. She was losing herself, piece by piece, to something she didn't want.
The sound of approaching footsteps broke her reverie. She turned to find Kian striding toward her, his expression hard, his posture that of the Alpha he was born to be. But there was something different in his eyes. Something that made her pause, something she couldn't name.
"Stay inside," Kian commanded, his voice low, firm, but there was an undercurrent of something she couldn't decipher. "It's not safe out here."
Lena frowned, instinctively stepping back as he reached her. The bond flared again, a sharp sting of awareness that made her skin prickle. She could feel him too clearly, like he was a part of her now, as much as she hated it.
"I'm not staying locked up," she retorted, her voice biting. "I don't take orders from you."
Kian's jaw tightened, and for a brief moment, she thought she saw frustration flash across his face. But he hid it quickly, his Alpha mask snapping back into place.
"You need to listen to me," he said, his voice more strained than she'd heard it. "There's something out there. We don't know who, but they're dangerous. And you're a part of this pack now. Whether you like it or not, I have to protect you."
Lena crossed her arms, her gaze defiant. "Protect me? You're the one who got me into this mess in the first place. You think I'm just going to sit back and wait for you to 'protect' me like some helpless little Omega?"
Her words stung more than she intended, but they were the truth. She wasn't helpless. She wasn't weak. She wasn't going to just stand by and let Kian make all the decisions for her.
But something in his eyes shifted. A flash of something raw, something vulnerable, made her question everything she thought she knew about him.
"I don't want to do this alone," Kian said quietly, his voice low but intense. "I need you, Lena. You might not believe it now, but I do. You're not just a pawn in this pack. You're mine, and I'll protect what's mine."
Lena recoiled at his words, even though a part of her knew they were true. The bond, the claim - they were his. And yet, she still couldn't bring herself to trust him, not fully. She didn't know him, not really. All she knew was that he was an Alpha with a burden that she wasn't prepared to carry.
"You think I'm going to just accept this?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and something else. "That I'm just going to let you control me, force me into this life because of some bond?"
Kian took a step forward, closing the space between them, and for a brief moment, Lena felt the heat of his presence consume her. The bond tugged at her again, stronger this time, but she refused to let it take hold. She wouldn't give him that satisfaction. Not yet.
"I don't want to control you," he said, his voice softer now, almost pleading. "I don't want to hurt you, Lena. But you have to understand... This isn't just about us. There's more at stake. The pack, the future - it's all tied to this. And if we don't make it through this, if we don't survive what's coming, everything will fall apart."
Lena's breath caught in her throat. The desperation in his voice was too real, too raw to ignore. She had never seen Kian like this - not the cold, calculating Alpha she had met, but the man behind the title. The man who was trying, in his own way, to keep them both safe.
"What's coming?" she whispered, her voice small.
Kian's gaze softened, a flicker of something painful passing through his eyes. "There are enemies, Lena. Enemies who want more than just control over the pack. They want to destroy everything we've built. And the bond between us... it's more than just a claim. It's a lifeline. Our survival depends on it."
Lena stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the truth of his words, but it didn't make her want to accept them any more than she had before. She wanted to fight, wanted to scream at him, tell him that she didn't want any part of this world. But something in her hesitated. Something inside her - a flicker of the bond, perhaps - made her pause.
"I don't know if I can do this," she admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know if I can be what you need me to be."
Kian's gaze softened further, and for the first time since they had met, there was no hardness, no arrogance in his eyes. There was only something vulnerable, something that made her chest ache in ways she couldn't explain.
"You don't have to be what I need," he said gently. "Just be you. That's enough for me."
The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. And for the first time, Lena wasn't sure if she hated him - or if something else was beginning to take root.
