Chapter 4 Dear Lord

Nova Bassey POV»

Keeping a low profile till he left was no hard work at all. He got into his car almost immediately and drove off, and I could finally move freely in the office premises again.

For him to have attended the conference meeting for my project for U&K, then he must be someone really important. I would have said he was the owner of U&K, but I heard it was owned by an old man.

I needed to do a little searching and I knew just who to ask. "Mr Smith!" I called out to the team leader as I ran up to him.

"Huh?" "Nova!" "There you are!" "I've been looking everywhere for you." A big satisfied smile played on his face. He took both of my hands and shook them. "You did wonderfully today! Your project idea will be adapted, and the whole world will know our name again."

I allowed myself a moment of self-appraisal as I smiled. I knew my job, and I was good at it. I wouldn't have gotten fired from my last one if it wasn't for that bastard Marvin.

"Thank you."

"You know what I heard? That I may get a promotion for scouting such good staff if the proposal pleases U&K and you will be promoted to team leader!" He beamed at me almost as bright as the sun.

"Mr Smith, I have a question!" I finally shoved my words amidst his roar of laughter.

"He fell silent," and I knew he was waiting for me to ask. There was a man who was with us in the conference room earlier. "Blue eyes, brown hair, seated at the end of the room?"

My eyes squinted as I watched him try to merge my description together to form a face, and it didn't even take him up to three seconds. "Ah! You mean Mr Quin."

Quin, so that was his name.

He leaned closer to me and lowered his voice to a whisper. "Most people don't know him and he likes to keep it that way, so don't tell anyone I told you this, okay?"

I nodded my head as I stared at him in anticipation.

"Mr Quin is the CEO of our marketing company."

As I heard those words, everywhere fell silent and all I could hear was myself telling the CEO of the freaking company I work at how hard I am. All I could remember was how I moaned in his arms and my knees suddenly felt weak.

Mr Smith caught me before I fell to the floor and helped me gain my balance again. "Are you okay?" he asked worriedly.

I blinked. The sudden light-headedness I was feeling was partially caused by the news I had just heard and possibly pregnancy sickness.

"Miss Bassey!" He yelled out my name and I snapped awake.

I bowed my head and excused myself. My one-night stand is my boss? How will I ever survive working under him? Looking into his eyes?

No! I have to quit! But the pay is good, and I still have debts wrapped around me. Why does my life have to be so complicated?

I couldn't stop myself from thinking. Tendering my resignation letter was definitely something I had to think about, but I was sure of one thing: I needed to leave the premises at once and not come back for a while.

Convincing Mr Smith to give me a week off was not a very easy task, especially since I had only just joined. But I was able to come up with a lie that won me a week off work.

I'll go to my parents. That's what I'll do. I never had to pack when I was going to visit my parents on the outskirts of the city, since I always left clothes and anything I might need there.

It was the place I always went to escape the harsh reality of my life, especially when Marvin started cheating on me and piling up lifetime debts.

The long drive was especially what I needed to release some toxic gases from my body and help me feel a little more relaxed, but as I parked in the compound of their house, fear engulfed me.

How would I explain to them that I was pregnant and for a one-night stand who turned out to be my boss and that I was also thinking of quoting the new job I just found because of it?

I'd have to cross that bridge when I got there.

A bath and good food always worked like a wonder in calming my nerves. I had changed into fresh clothes as my parents and I sat together at the dining table and had lunch.

My dad hasn't said a word to me since I arrived. I wouldn't be wrong if I said he hated me. I never listened to him when he tried to warn me about Marvin, and we'd end up having heated conversations and not talking for weeks.

Since our last fight before my divorce, he hadn't spoken to me like his own daughter.

"My love," my mom's voice, caused me to look up at her.I didn't want to ask because I knew you'd be stressed up from traveling the long journey, so I waited. Now I can ask, didn't you just get a new job? "Why are you here instead of working on a Monday?"

I almost choked on my lunch at my mother's question. Taking a sip from the glass of water sitting in front of me, I managed to smile. "I took some time off to rest."

A sad expression played on my mother's face and I knew that she had translated my words. She squeezed my hand gently. "You poor thing, you must still be so broken."

Of course. She was talking about my divorce. Normally, I have always been caught crying my eyes out ever since I got a divorce, but lately, I haven't even gotten the time to think of that bastard unless his name was mentioned.

"You look so sick and tired, you need a rest." "I would have loved it if you were still unemployed," she said with a pitiful expression.

It was my chance to use her words as my escape route. "I'm going to quit then," I said with a smile.

My dad only scoffed.

"You don't have to, there's no need to do that anymore. You have to have something to do to be happy."

"I'll find another job later. I can't continue to work there anymore."

"Why not?" She questioned.

I opened my mouth to tell her the truth, but I was tongue-tied. Such a behavior could never miss my mother's eyes and her brows furrowed slightly. "Is there something else I should know?"

I remained silent for another moment, but no amount of silence could keep the secret hidden forever. Sooner or later, they'll have to know.

"I'm pregnant."

Her forks fell from her hand as her eyes widened. Even my dad looked up at me, a bit shocked. "What?" My mom asked me. "For Marvin?"

"No!"

The look on her face and even dad's showed relief. I couldn't blame them, they hated him more than shit!

"Who's the father then?" she asked.

The doorbell rang and I sprung to my feet. There wasn't a moment to be hesitant, it was my only chance to escape from my mother.

"Nova Rachel Bassey, you get back here this instant!" She knew my game and raced after me, but I didn't stop. She was quick-witted and always knew when I was avoiding her questions.

But I didn't listen. My plan? I would open the door for her guest and stay out till midnight before returning home.

As I opened the door, a set of blue eyes that looked just as surprised as I stared back at me and I froze with my hand on the door.

"Nova?" He said confusedly.

"Quin?" Was he stalking me? Dear Lord,
