The strain between us was obvious. It was all we had once been, not just the burden of our shattered trust. It was the way her presence still influenced me, the way I couldn't seem to shake the pull towards her. But we could not afford to focus on that. Not at this time.
"I know," I murmured softly, my voice hoarse. "Still, there is so much we are unaware of." We cannot afford to believe anyone else.
Kailyn's look softened, albeit little. What now then? Should we keep pretending this alliance is as strong as it once was?
I stopped to stare at her. The woman sitting beside me was not the same Kailyn I had once known. Years of hardship, of suffering had hardened her. But I had altered as well. The battle, the betrayals, the sacrifices-they had all cut deep wounds into both of us.
I finally said, "We rebuild it." One step at a time.
There was a short pause during which it seemed we may finally grasp one another once more, but then something changed. Something beyond my control. Kailyn leaned forward, and the space between us changed.
I could not explain why I did it. Perhaps it was the heat of the moment, the years of unresolved emotions, or perhaps it was the frustration. But I closed the gap between us and kissed her before I could consider.
The kiss was not lengthy. Just a quick meeting of lips that was plenty to send a chill down my spine, enough to make my heart accelerate. The room, however, felt colder when I withdrew. Her face was unreadable, and the tension that had been between us suddenly erupted like a wildfire.
What the hell was that? her voice quivering, she murmured
I stood with my hands at my sides locked into fists. "I don't know," I said quietly, my voice hoarse. "It's not what you believe, though."
My lieutenant came in, his countenance sombre, and the door banged open before she could answer. We have an issue, sir. The rogues are on the move once more.
The weight of the world pushing down on me made me turn to him. Kailyn's gaze remained fixed on me; her face reflected a combination of bewilderment and something I couldn't quite identify.
I breathed out, attempting to recover my composure. "We don't have time for this," I murmured, my voice calm in spite of the inner turmoil. Get the pack ready. We're going.
Kailyn sat opposite me, her weary but keen eyes combing the chart before her. Her posture showed me strain; her fingers tapped across the table in a pattern reflecting her racing thoughts.
"Vincent," she whispered unexpectedly, shattering the quiet. I have to inform you something.
Surprised by the gravity in her voice, I looked up at her. Her eyes didn't meet mine right away, but when they did, I could sense the load she was carrying, the burden of something unspoken. Something she had not before mentioned to me.
"I'm listening," I whispered softly, leaning forward.
Biting her lip, she hesitated as though weighing how much to disclose. Then she spoke with a sigh. I lived a different existence before all this, before everything. I wasn't only the head of my pack. I had been... She trailed off, staring at her hands as though the words were too hard to speak.
I remained motionless, hoping for her to go on. Back when life was easier, we had always been honest with one another. But what about now? Everything was now changed. We were unique.
Her voice soft, she said, "I knew the Alpha Kings." I didn't want you to find out. I didn't want anybody to know. But... I had no option.
Her remarks made my stomach turn. "You were with them?" I said, the words emerging more roughly than I meant.
Not looking at me, she nodded. I used to be. But that wasn't what you believe. I was attempting to defend my pack. I believed I could alter things from the inside out.
The chair scraped back and I stood up suddenly. What now? I asked, my voice tight. Kailyn, what are you trying to safeguard right now? What remains to guard?
She stood as well, but her face was inscrutable, the mask back on. Vincent, I'm not seeking your pardon, she added, her voice strained. You have to realise, nevertheless, that I acted as required.
Suddenly the door opened and my lieutenant entered looking pallid. Sir, an assault has occurred. One of our own has suffered.
I stood still, my heart pounding. "Who?"
He hesitated, looking to Kailyn first before returning to me. It's second in command. You are required.
The rogue wolves were closing in, their presence like a shadow over all we had constructed. Time was running out for us.
Are you ready? Kailyn's voice remained constant, but I could sense the underlying tension, the same dread I experienced in my chest.
I nodded and gripped the firearm in my palm tighter. We have no option.
We positioned our troops, ready for the unavoidable conflict. The rogue wolves had grown more organised and more brutal; I wasn't sure we were prepared for this battle. We had no option, though. We have to protect our land, our people.
The assault came quicker than I had expected. Leaping at us with violent power, the wolves pushed forward like a tsunami slamming on the coast, their growls saturating the air.
Every hit, every blow, every one driven by the need to save what remained, I battled with all I had. Kailyn battled next to me, her gaze fixed on the foe and her motions quick and exact. Like me, she was a fighter.
But suddenly, among the turmoil, I spotted him. A former figure, someone I believed I had left behind. He was coming towards us with a malicious smile growing on his face.
The man I once considered brother had allied with the foe.
Now, all I knew was about to shift.
I knew him right away. Elijah. My former friend. A face from the past I never expected to see again.
From behind me, sharp and warning, Kailyn spoke. "You know him?"
I didn't respond immediately. Memories pouring back, my mind raced. Once Elias had been a buddy, a valued combatant, and an ally. But that was before all had collapsed. Before treachery had tainted our ranks.
His presence was like a shadow falling in the gap between Kailyn and me as he stepped forward. His dark eyes met mine, and for a brief moment, it seemed as though we were back in the trenches, battling side by side. That sensation, however, soon passed.
"You have changed, Vincent," Elias remarked quietly, hardly a whisper, as though the wind itself may sweep his words away. I never imagined you would be in such a situation.
I breathed and steadied myself. Elias, what brings you here? What do you wish?
His lips twisting into a slight smirk, he looked at Kailyn and then back to me. Vincent, what I want is easy. I wish to provide you a path out. A means of overcoming the Alpha Kings.
The words hit me like a punch. "Conquer the Alpha Kings?" I said, my bitter laugh escaping. "You believe you have the solution? You, of all individuals?
Elias remained unflinching. Blackwell, you have it all wrong. The Alpha Kings are not in charge of everything. This conflict is bigger than you realise. Should you not accompany me, you will lose. Every one of you.
Her expression blank and her gaze fixed on Elias with mistrust and doubt, I looked to Kailyn. "Are we really going to listen to him?" she enquired quietly, as though the very act of asking the question could make it reality.
Elias moved forward to bridge the gap between us. "Listen," he said, his voice rising in intensity. You have an opportunity to stop this before it ruins you. Come with us. The Alpha Kings, the rogue wolves, are only pieces in a far bigger game. Survival depends on your decision.
I sensed Kailyn's gaze on me, looking for any indication of my thoughts. There was no obvious response, though.
And what benefits this for you? Kailyn's voice was crisp, slicing through the strain. Elias, you have always been a mercenary. What's your angle?
Elias's grin broadened, but it wasn't warm. Naturally, power. You really believe I'd travel all this distance merely to play knight in shining armour? I'm giving you a cooperation. Control ends the fight, not the Alpha Kings. You and I, Vincent. We accept all.
Though the implication was obvious, I felt Kailyn's hand on my arm, a gentle touch. She was reminding me of what we had to defend. This was about survival, not only about power.
He moved back, his eyes shining with something sinister. Consider it. Consider it. Should you not, you will lament.
The offer lingered in the air, weighty and full of meaning. Elias turned and went away, vanishing into the trees, leaving us in the stillness, the wind's voice filling the void between us.
"Vincent," Kailyn whispered gently, her voice a line of stress. What will happen next?
Kailyn and I stood side by side, palms flat on the maps laid out before us, marks showing the movements of the rogue wolves and Alpha Kings. All the puzzle pieces were in position. All that remained was to make the move.
Kailyn whispered softly, her voice thick with annoyance, "I can't believe this is where we are." Almost to ruin what we have built. Elias's offer should have been accepted.
My finger followed the map's lines while I shook my head. We lack knowledge. Trusting him, trusting anyone at this time might be a death sentence. The risks are too great.
"So we just keep fighting?" she enquired, her voice quieter now, almost challenging the fundamental foundation of our intentions. "Is that all we have remaining?"
My heart was racing as I looked at her. At this time, it's all we can do. Should we not battle or resist, there is nothing left. Everything we have lost, everything we have battled for will be for naught.
My phone buzzed just as I was about to speak, the loud noise shattering the stillness. Before I even glanced at the screen, I took it from my pocket and felt fear in my stomach.
The message was awful even without reading it.
What is it? Kailyn enquired, her voice strained with worry.
My fingers shook as I read the words out loud, turning the phone towards her. Someone we trusted has let us down. The conflict is set to intensify as well.
