Chapter 5 Lost

Edina's pov

Just then, the door opened. Nurse Karen looked up, her expression brightening as a man entered.

He was tall and wearing a clean white coat. His piercing blue eyes stared back at him and he was so handsome, too handsome for his good.

His face looked somewhat familiar, yet unfamiliar to me at the same time. I felt a connection with him but couldn't figure out why and where I must have met him.

His friendly eyes seemed serious as they stared at me.

"Edina," he said gently, taking measured steps toward me as if I were a frightened animal.

"I'm Dr. Cole, and I wanted to check on you myself. How are you feeling?"

I blinked and tried to reply, but I couldn't find the words. I just stared, feeling confused and tight in my chest.

I think it struck now, I recognized him now but vaguely.

The doctor who had helped and comforted me back at the hospital.

But was I still in the same hospital?

Was Maxwell and Kourtney here?

I was too tired to ask.

"I..." I whispered softly, the words barely coming out."I don't... understand."

Dr. Cole exchanged a glance with Nurse Karen, concern crossing his face. He exhaled deeply and approached my bedside, his expression showing empathy

"Edina," he started, his tone soothing yet heavy with something I couldn't place. "I know this is confusing and might be shocking. But... we need to inform you that... there were complications."

I felt overwhelmed by his heavy words hanging in the air, making it hard for me to breathe.

I looked back and forth between him and Nurse Karen, feeling a sense of dread as she nodded slowly with tears in her eyes.

"Complications?" I repeated, the word struggling to escape my lips.

I immediately touched my stomach, feeling a dull pain that had been there since I woke up.

I started to feel sick, and almost wanted to throw up, my fingers shaking as I tried to understand what was happening.

Dr. Cole looked at me kindly and put his hand on mine, making me feel more secure.

"I feel really bad, Edina," he said with sadness in his voice. "You... you lost the baby."

Time seemed to freeze.

Lost my baby?

The words pierced through my mind, brutal and hard, slicing into me. I gasped, the realization tightening around my chest, as if I were drowning in a harsh darkness test I couldn't get out from. Tears immediately blurred my vision.

"No," I whispered, my voice breaking, sounding hollow and desperate, sounding like something I couldn't believe was mine.

"No, that can't be... I can't have..." My hands tightened around the thin sheet as though it was my only connection to reality.

Nurse Karen stepped closer, her hand gently on my shoulder. " I know this is incredibly painful, Edina. We're here for you."

But her words barely reached me.

It felt like she wasn't speaking to me at all.

Everything felt like a movie, one moment I had a child growing in me, a source of hope. And now everything is gone. Forever.

My bundle of joy vanished like it had never existed.

"I didn't even have a chance..." I said with a shaky voice, feeling a deep sadness within me.

Breathing felt like a struggle, thinking even harder.

Dr. Cole nodded, his gaze heavy with understanding. "I know, Edina. There's no healing for that pain. It will take time to heal."

"What happened?" I managed to force out, my voice sounding foreign. "How... how did this happen?"

Dr. Cole looked at Nurse Karen before responding. "You had an accident, Edina. From what we understand, you fell and experienced bleeding. Dr Cole saw you here on his way back from a family dinner. It was a hit and run ." She paused, sympathy filling her eyes. "He wanted you to be safe."

The young man she told me about was Dr Cole.

"I don't remember," I admitted, shame washing over me. "I can't recall anything."

"That's completely fine and I do not hold it against you, I just wanted you to be safe." He said, sending a sweet smile my way.

" Thank you," I said In a small voice and he nodded.

"Yes, that is true." Nurse Karen chipped in." It's okay not to remember, sometimes our mind does things like this to protect us from the harsh realities of life."

Protect me? Bitter laughter escaped me, though it came out more like a choked sob, my chest heavy. What exactly was there left to protect?

"Edina," Dr. Cole's voice was gentle yet firm.

"It's completely normal to feel the way you do at this moment. It's alright to grieve. When a child is lost..." He paused, briefly turning his gaze away to collect himself. "Going through this is really tough for anyone. But we're here to help. I will be with you, Edina."

I turned my head away, unable to face him. The pain was too intense, too much to bear. "I don't want support. I just want... I want my baby." My voice faltered again, and tears streamed down my cheeks, hot and relentless.

"I know, sweetheart," Nurse Karen said, rubbing soothing circles on my shoulder. "It's okay. Let it out."

I didn't want to think of anything, to think of how my life had crumbled. Ever since I was little I had never had a life of happiness and fulfilment.

If I was to make a wish, I would go back to the past.

To go back to when me and Maxwell were happy. At least that was happiness before Kourtney came back. Before all this happened.

I looked up at Dr Cole again and as tears rolled down my cheeks again, I muttered.

" Thank you for giving me the opportunity to live again."
