Chapter 3 The First strike

Isla knew she was being watched. The sensation had been a lingering shadow in her mind ever since she started digging into Adrian's past.

She expected intimidation tactics, maybe a veiled threat or a chilling note left at her door. But she never expected this.

The city lights flickered through the alleyway as she pressed her back against the damp brick wall, her breaths coming fast and shallow.

She had been careful, slipping through streets she thought were safe, yet her instincts screamed that something was terribly wrong. Then she heard it the unmistakable scrape of a boot against concrete.

Isla turned, her pulse hammering. A figure emerged from the darkness, dressed in black, his face obscured by the shadows. The glint of metal in his hand made her blood run cold. A knife. Time slowed.

Isla stumbled back, her mind racing. She had no weapon, no means to defend herself. Panic clawed at her throat, but survival instinct surged stronger. She turned on her heel and ran. Footsteps pounded behind her. She darted through the alley, her heart hammering in her chest. If she could just reach the main road, find someone A hand grabbed her arm, yanking her back with brute force.

Isla cried out, twisting, but the grip was merciless. The knife glinted under the dim streetlights. "You should have stayed out of it," the man growled. "You had your warning." Terror shot through her.

Isla fought wildly, kicking, clawing, but he was too strong. The knife lifted, aiming for her throat. She gasped Then a gunshot rang out. The man jerked.

Blood splattered against the wall as he crumpled, the knife clattering to the ground. Isla gasped, staggering back, her wide eyes darting around in confusion. A tall figure stepped out of the shadows, his gun still smoking. Adrian.

He moved with a deadly grace, his dark eyes assessing the fallen attacker with cold detachment. Then he turned to Isla, his gaze locking onto hers. "You have a habit of walking into trouble, don't you?" Isla opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Adrenaline surged through her veins, leaving her shaking. Adrian sighed, stepping forward. Before she could react, he grabbed her wrist, his grip firm but not painful. "Let go of me!" she snapped, yanking back. He didn't. "You're coming with me," Adrian said, his voice calm yet absolute.

Isla's stomach clenched. "Like hell I am." Adrian's grip tightened slightly, his expression unreadable. "You don't have a choice." Before she could protest, a sleek black car pulled up beside them.

A man in a suit stepped out and opened the back door. Isla barely had time to struggle before Adrian maneuvered her inside. The door slammed shut, sealing her fate.

She pounded against the window, but the glass didn't budge.

"You can't just kidnap me!" Adrian slid in beside her, the scent of his expensive cologne filling the confined space. He leaned back, watching her with an unreadable expression. "I just did." Rage burned through Isla, her hands balling into fists. "Why?" she demanded.

"Because I refused to be intimidated? Because I dared to dig into your past?" Adrian exhaled slowly, as if her words tested his patience. "Because you don't understand the danger you're in.

That man wasn't acting alone. If I hadn't been there, you'd be dead." Her blood ran cold. "And you expect me to believe you did it out of the kindness of your heart?" A ghost of a smirk crossed his lips. "No.

I did it because you belong to me now, whether you like it or not." Isla sucked in a sharp breath. The possessiveness in his voice, the certainty in his claim, sent a chill down her spine. She turned to face him fully.

"I don't belong to anyone." Adrian tilted his head slightly, as if considering her words. Then he leaned in, closing the distance between them. His voice dropped to a low murmur. "You'll learn." The car sped into the night, taking her further from the life she had known and deeper into Adrian's world.

The ride was silent for a long moment, Isla's mind racing. The city blurred past the tinted windows, the streetlights casting fleeting glows inside the car.

She could hear her own breath, feel the weight of Adrian's presence beside her. He sat at ease, one hand resting on his knee, the other lightly tapping against the leather seat, as if contemplating something far beyond her understanding. She couldn't take it anymore. "What exactly do you want from me?" she asked, her voice harsher than she intended. Adrian turned to her, his gaze unreadable.

"For starters, I want you to stop looking for answers you're not ready to face." She scoffed. "You think you can just lock me away, and I'll forget everything?" A low chuckle escaped him. "No. But I can keep you close enough to control the damage you might cause."

Her stomach twisted.

"I'm not a pawn in whatever game you're playing."

Adrian leaned in slightly, his face inches from hers. "Aren't you? You stepped into this world willingly, Isla. You wanted the truth. Now you'll see what it costs."

She swallowed hard, unwilling to let him see her fear. "You're a monster."

He smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Maybe. But I'm the monster who just saved your life." The car came to a slow stop in front of an iron-gated estate, towering walls concealing what lay beyond.

Isla's heart pounded as the gates opened and the car glided forward. There was no turning back now. The moment the car stopped, Adrian stepped out first, extending a hand toward Isla. She refused it, forcing herself to move on her own despite the shaky feeling in her limbs.

He smirked at her defiance but said nothing as he led her through the heavy front doors of a grand estate. Inside, marble floors gleamed under the chandelier's soft light.

The air smelled of cedar and something faintly spiced Adrian's scent.

Guards flanked the hallways, their eyes sharp and unyielding. "You'll stay here until I decide otherwise," Adrian announced as they reached a large suite. "Make yourself comfortable." Isla crossed her arms. "And if I refuse?" His gaze darkened. "Then you'll force my hand."

A shiver ran down her spine as he stepped closer, his voice softer now. "I'd rather you didn't." Her throat went dry, but she lifted her chin. "I won't stop fighting you." Adrian chuckled. "Good. I wouldn't want you to." With that, he turned and left, the door locking behind him. Isla exhaled shakily. She was trapped but this wasn't over.
