Chapter 7 7

Ava's fingers trembled as she held the worn envelope. It felt heavier than it should have, as if it carried the weight of her past, of unanswered questions she had buried deep.

Ethan was right beside her, his presence grounding, his warmth steady even in the cold emptiness of the warehouse.

"Open it," he murmured, his voice low but firm.

Ava swallowed hard and slid her finger under the worn flap, tearing it open. Inside were a few yellowed papers and an old photograph.

She lifted the picture first, her breath catching as she recognized the faces.

Her father, standing with James. And behind them, a man she didn't recognize-but something about his sharp gaze sent a chill down her spine.

James watched her closely, his expression unreadable. "That man... he's the one who ordered your father's death."

Ava's pulse pounded. "Who is he?"

James exhaled, rubbing a hand over his face. "A very powerful man. Someone I spent years running from. And if you're not careful, Ava, he'll come for you too."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Then tell us who he is so we can stop him."

James hesitated.

Ava stepped forward, gripping his arm. "No more secrets. If you really wanted to protect me, you'd tell me everything."

He sighed. "His name is Victor Langley. He runs more than just businesses-he controls people. And your father... he got too close to exposing him."

The name meant nothing to Ava, but the way Ethan stiffened told her he recognized it.

"Victor Langley is one of the most dangerous men in California," Ethan said grimly. "I've dealt with him before."

James nodded. "Then you know how ruthless he can be."

Ava's chest tightened. This wasn't just some old ghost from her past. This was real. This was dangerous.

And worst of all-she wasn't sure if she'd ever be safe again.

She turned away, running a hand through her hair. "I need a minute."

Ethan followed her as she stepped outside into the cool night air. The silence stretched between them, heavy with things unsaid.

After a long moment, he spoke. "Talk to me."

Ava hugged herself, staring at the dark horizon. "I thought I had escaped all this. I thought if I stayed in my little café, if I didn't ask questions, my past would stay buried."

Ethan took a step closer, his voice softer now. "You can't outrun the past, Ava. Trust me, I've tried."

She let out a shaky laugh. "Did it work?"

His eyes held hers, something raw and unguarded in them. "No. It never does."

A lump formed in her throat. She had spent so long keeping him at arm's length, pretending that what they had once meant nothing. But now, standing here with him, she couldn't lie to herself anymore.

Slowly, he reached out, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I hate seeing you like this."

His touch was light, but it sent warmth through her, a stark contrast to the cold fear curling in her chest.

"I don't know what to do, Ethan," she admitted. "If I go back to my normal life, I'll always be looking over my shoulder. But if I face this head-on... I don't know if I'm strong enough."

Ethan's hand moved to her cheek, his thumb brushing gently over her skin. "You are. You've always been stronger than you think."

Ava's breath hitched. He was so close now, the warmth of him seeping into her, his scent-clean and masculine-wrapping around her like a safety net.

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered.

His gaze darkened, his fingers trailing down to her jaw. "Because I still care. Because no matter how much time has passed, you still matter to me, Ava."

Her heart pounded. "Ethan-"

But before she could say another word, his lips brushed against hers.

Soft at first, testing, as if giving her a chance to pull away. But she didn't.

She couldn't.

The moment she leaned into him, his restraint shattered. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her against his chest as his lips claimed hers in a slow, deep kiss.

It wasn't just a kiss.

It was everything they hadn't said.

It was the years of distance collapsing, the ache of unfinished business, the silent confessions neither had dared to make.

Ava clutched his shirt, her body molding against his as the kiss deepened. For the first time in years, she felt safe. Not because the danger was gone-but because she wasn't facing it alone.

When they finally pulled apart, both breathless, Ethan rested his forehead against hers.

"This changes things," he murmured.

Ava exhaled shakily. "Yeah... it does."

A flicker of uncertainty crossed his face. "Are you okay with that?"

She hesitated for only a second before nodding. "I think I've been waiting for this longer than I want to admit."

A slow, knowing smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Good."

For a moment, everything else faded-the threats, the fear, the past.

But reality came crashing back when James stepped outside.

"We need to leave," he said urgently. "Now."

Ethan's expression hardened. "Why?"

James glanced around, his posture tense. "Because we're being watched."

Ava's stomach dropped.

Ethan was already moving, his protective instincts kicking in. "Get in the car. Now."

Ava didn't argue.

As soon as they were inside, Ethan peeled out of the lot, his sharp gaze flicking to the rearview mirror.

A pair of headlights followed.

"They're tailing us," Ethan muttered.

Ava's pulse pounded. "What do we do?"

Ethan's grip on the wheel tightened. "We lose them."

He took a sharp turn, the tires screeching against the pavement. The other car followed.

James cursed under his breath. "They're persistent."

Ethan's jaw clenched. "Yeah, well, so am I."

He gunned the engine, weaving through the streets. The car behind them tried to keep up, but Ethan was faster, more controlled.

Ava's heart was in her throat as the city lights blurred past.

Then, suddenly-

The other car turned down a different street, vanishing into the night.

Ethan slowed only when he was sure they were clear.

Ava released a shaky breath. "That was too close."

Ethan nodded, his expression grim. "This isn't over."

James turned in his seat. "We need to lay low. At least for now."

Ethan's gaze flickered to Ava, something unspoken passing between them.

She knew what he was thinking.

She wasn't safe anymore.

And neither was he.

But as he reached over, his fingers brushing hers in the dim light, a silent promise passed between them.

No matter what came next, they'd face it together.
