Chapter 4 0004

Hazel's pov

I tried so hard to swallow the lump that dislodged in my throat. However, it seemed that It was almost impossible.

Ethan's voice pulled me from my frozen state, but my legs still refused to move.

"You're the doctor on my father's case?" He questioned, his tone was sharp, accusatory.

So, I clenched my fists, grinding my teeth to keep my emotions in check. "Not anymore," I said coldly, my voice steady even though my insides were a storm.

His brows furrowed as his expression shifted to something between shock and anger. He opened his mouth to speak, but I didn't want to hear a word of it.

With that, I stepped forward, intent on walking past him, but he grabbed my arm and pushed me back against the wall.

It wasn't rough enough to hurt, but the act itself made my blood boil.

"What's your problem?" I snapped, glaring up at him.

"My problem?" His voice rose, laced with disbelief. "I should be asking you that. You don't want to treat my father because of what happened between us? Are you insane?"

I scoffed, yanking at my arm to free myself from his grip. "How dare you? I'm a professional, and if you'll excuse me, I have more important things to do than to deal with you."

But his grip tightened as the Alpha, he was obviously stronger than I am. "You ungrateful bitch. That's what you are." His voice was low now, almost a growl. "Do you have any idea how much my father did for you? He's the reason you're here."

That was it. The nerve of this man.

"How dare you say such to me? I made me!" I hissed, using every ounce of strength to shove his hand away.

"And I don't owe you or your father a damn thing."

Though I didn't wait for his response. My legs carried me down the hall, faster and faster, until I was safely in my office.

Then, I slammed the files onto my desk, my hands trembling with anger. As my nails dug into my palms as I clenched my fists, trying to calm the storm inside me.

"Why!"

"Why was the moon goddess doing this to me? It's so cruel. I'd spent years trying to forget Ethan and everything he'd done to me. And now, here he was, back in my life, throwing my past in my face.

With that, the weight of it all pressed down on me as it became suffocating. So, I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing the burn in my throat to subside

Then, I heard a knock at the door and I flinched. For a split second, I thought it was him.

But when I opened it, relief washed over me as I realized it was Kelvin.

He stepped inside with his usual easygoing smile, but the moment he saw my face, his expression darkened.

"Hey, are you okay?" he asked, concern etched into his features.

"I'm fine." I lied, forcing a smile.

Seeing this, his brow furrowed, unconvinced. "Hazel."

Knowing I had no choice at it is, I sighed as I finally admitted to him, "I need your help."

"With what?" he responded instantly.

"There's a patient I want you to take over," I said, avoiding his gaze. "I have my reasons for asking."

Kelvin frowned. "Why? You never hand off cases. Did something happen?"

"You usually love to handle cases." I hesitated. "Besides we both know that I'm not a professional in oncology. You are the one who knows who to–"

"It's nothing like that," I cut in quickly. "I'm just... tired. Stressed. I need to take care of myself, and I don't think I can handle this case right now."

He studied me for a long moment before nodding. "Alright. I'll do it. But you'll need to walk me through everything, okay?"

I exhaled in relief. "Of course."

With that, I handed him the files as I uttered to him. "The patient has pelvic cancer. Here's everything you need to know."

On that note, we had our seats as Kelvin began flipping through the documents, but my mind was elsewhere.

As Ethan's words echoed in my head, fueling the anger simmering inside me.

"Hazel! are you alright?" Kelvin's voice snapped me back to reality.

"What?" I asked, blinking at him.

"You just... went blank," he said, his brow furrowed. "Are you good?"

I forced a laugh. "Sorry. Like I said, I'm just tired. I think I need some time off."

Seeing this, Kelvin nodded in agreement. "I can see that now," he said. "Take all the time you need. I'll cover for you."

"Thank you," I said sincerely, standing to grab my bag as I pressed a quick kiss to his cheek before heading for the door.

As soon as I stepped outside, I inhaled deeply, hoping the fresh air would clear my mind. But my relief was short-lived as I heard my name from a distance.

"Hazel!"

At that moment, I froze as I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

"Come on, cab, stop," I muttered under my breath, waving frantically at an approaching taxi.

"Hazel!" Ethan's voice was closer now, more insistent.

However, the cab finally pulled over, and I practically threw myself into the backseat.

"Drive!" I barked at the driver. "Just go!"

Following my words, the cab sped off, and I exhaled shakily, sinking into the seat. My hands began shaking, as my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest.

But right there, I knew I dared not look back
