Sophia flinched, only to find Marcus's penetrating obsidian stare pinning her from mere inches away.
His earthy, virile scent enveloped her senses once more, steadying her frantic mind like an anchor in the raging storm.
"Breathe," he commanded in that low, potent rumble that seemed to vibrate straight through to her bones. "Hold to my voice."
Inexplicably, she found herself obeying, drawing in a deep draft of night-cooled air tinged with his piney essence.
Against all reason, it centered her, banishing the panic clawing up her throat to replace it with prickling awareness.
"Good," Marcus murmured, close enough that she could feel its bassy resonance buzzing through the scant space between them. "They seek to drown you in their posturing and power games, little one."
At that, a hint of a smile curved the sharp angle of his jaw as he leaned fractionally nearer - every molecule in Sophia's body screaming at the potent provocation of his proximity.
"But you need only hold to what you know to be true in your soul. The Moon Maiden's magnificence that stirs even the most steadfast of us."
She stared up at him, drinking in the stark masculine beauty of his chiseled features and the stoic resolve flickering to life behind those fathomless onyx depths.
So close she could feel the heat of his breath pluming against her parted lips as he canted his head infinitesimally closer.
"You are more than a mere conquest or territorial scrap for them to wrangle over." That sinful mouth curved in a wry twist. "We both know the true Alpha is-"
"MARCUS!"
They both jolted at Jonathan's booming command from outside, as if an electric current had lanced between them and scattered the heavy moment into smoky tendrils.
The bigger man gritted his teeth, muscles feathering along his jaw as he visibly reigned in whatever had seized the reins of his baser impulses.
"Come along, then," Marcus rumbled, moving to push his door open. "Time to meet the rest of the rabble scrapping over your untapped power."
Sophia scrambled to follow suit, every instinct screaming to stay glued to this behemoth whose solid presence promised security from the madness.
But as she stepped out into the glaring floodlights, the full force of the Alpha male pissing contest hit her head on.
Shirtless warriors prowled the motor court flashing eyes, teeth and hypnotically rippling musculature that defied human limitation.
Growls of challenge issued from corded throats as the scent of pure aggression spiked, heavy and metallic on the air.
And at the eye of this churning tempest stood Jonathan.
His pale hair seemed to glow like a beacon under the stark illumination, muscular torso still concealed beneath his crisp white button-down as he locked eyes with one of the savages - silently commanding him to yield through sheer force of will.
Damien, too, lingered on the periphery exuding an infuriating semblance of ease and entitlement as he oversaw the subtle shifts in power plays unfolding.
"Enough!" Jonathan's voice sliced through the rising tension like a blade through suet. "All of you, hear me."
The command resonated on some preternatural frequency that Sophia felt quivering through every cell as the assembly instantly stilled, each imposing alpha male figure grinding to rigid attention.
All eyes locked on Jonathan with avid, predatory focus.
"Our world now irrevocably shifts." He stalked through the ranks, movements radiating refined menace at odds with his seemingly casual words. "The prophecies...are realized."
He paused, those smoldering molten eyes turning to Sophia with enough weight to pin her in place.
It felt like his very stare was searing layers of oblivious humanity from her soul to expose the raw, quaking power thrumming just beneath.
"She awakens among us at last. The Moon Maiden destined to bind all packs in unison under one ruler's command." A feral snarl twisted his lips as his regard swept the assorted warriors once more. "To cull the festering rot that threatens everything we uphold!"
One of the warriors toward the rear lashed out, quick as a viper, only to be brought up short by a pair of his cohorts who tackled and wrestled him into submission.
He thrashed and howled like a demon until Damien spoke, a single lilting word dripping censure.
"Peace."
Instantly all aggression ceased, the snarling beast stilling to ragged panting.
Not a single eye left Jonathan as he pivoted on his heel to pace a slow, measured path opposite to where Sophia and Marcus watched in silence.
"We all scented her emergence to power. As is our sovereign right." His molten stare sliced penetratingly toward Damien, who met it with infuriatingly casual ease.
"My claim was...impulsively asserted. But no less valid."
Damien shrugged one nonchalant shoulder, the very image of dismissive indifference. "And I've no patience for your juvenile territorial fixation, Johnathan. We both know how this will unfold."
"Do we?"
The quiet challenge sparked a rolling growl throughout the assembly of predatory males.
Marcus shifted beside Sophia, stance widening subtly as if preparing to hurl himself bodily between the sharply escalating confrontation.
But before things could spiral further, a cool, melodic voice sliced through the mounting tensions.
"Enough, Alpha."
The entire phalanx stiffened, heads snapping toward the compound's main entrance.
Sophia gasped as a striking vision descended the front steps in a shimmering amaranth evening gown, inky tresses spilling over one sculpted shoulder.
The woman moved with leonine grace and confidence, her seraphic features schooled in regal serenity.
And radiating Power with an indisputable capital 'P'.
At once, every eye male averted in a show of instinctive deference.
Even Jonathan ducked his chin in a subtle nod while both Marcus and Damien shifted into watchful stillness.
The statuesque female glided forward, pausing to sweep Sophia with an appraising - yet not unkind - look before returning her impervious focus to Jonathan.
"The council convenes in the morning," she stated, each syllable carved from granite certainty. "We shall address these...conflicts through ratified ceremony as our laws dictate."
Jonathan's jaw clenched subtly, obviously swallowing his rebuttal. After a moment, he inclined his head once more. "Very well."
"Wise." The woman speared him with eyes like chips of splintered amethyst. "Heel your aggression, young Alpha. You've much to prove before worthy of command."
The words hung heavier than gravity, sucking the air from Sophia's lungs.
To her shock, both Marcus and Damien reacted with subtle motions of disquiet.
As if this ominous pronouncement carried far more weight than she could yet comprehend.
One elegantly arched brow winged upward as the female's cool regard settled on Sophia."And you, child. Marshal your valor and wisdom."
Her wrist flicked in a gesture so slight, yet it sent concentric ripples shivering outward with scintillating power.
A heartbeat later, an invisible vise constricted around Sophia's lungs, stealing her breath and consciousness in a dizzying spiral of shadow.
The last image seared into her retracting awareness was of Damien's intense gaze burned straight through to the marrow of her being.
