Chapter 5 Dragged to the Altar

ADELAIDE'S POV

Waking up to a bucket of water being dumped on your head is the most humiliating way to wake up, trust me.

"Wake up you stupid girl!" The slap that follows jolts me to my senses.

I gasped, holding my cheeks in disbelief at the sting.

I looked up to my mother's furious face.

"You know how much embarrassment you caused, running away like that? Be grateful we're marrying you off! You have a wedding to prepare for, meet me downstairs in ten minutes." With that, she stormed out of the room.

Unwilling to process how I even got into bed when my last memory was of me drinking.

The memories of yesterday's parties resurfaced again, stabbing me in the chest.

I whimpered, walking to my mirror; blood trickled down from the spot my mother's ring had bruised me.

My phone was still in my pocket. Fifteen missed calls from Ethan and several messages asking to talk.

I dropped my phone and sighed heavily. Ironically, he was my only friend, so there was no one to confide in.

I splashed cold water on my face, tossing the gown and putting on comfortable slacks. I walked downstairs where the whole family was waiting.

Including him.

"What is Ethan doing here?"

"What do you mean I'm still getting married to Ethan?"

"I will have no more of this family questioning my decisions." My father's voice was cold.

I caught sight of Ethan's smirk.

That devil.

"Daddy, please tell me, you're scaring me, she's also sharing with me, I don't feel safe !" Summer clutched our mother dramatically.

Unbelievable! This little skank!

Meanwhile, Ethan just stood there, looking at the floor, without saying a word.

Coward.

"Dad, I caught both of them having sex! If you think I'm going to get married-"

"Quiet!" He backhanded me hard. I tumbled to the ground while Ethan looked away uncomfortably. I pushed him away, furious.

My Father leaned down to whisper. "You start packing now. You were never good for much anyway, you have me to thank for providing this life for you and I ask that you marry a billionaire to secure our family and this is how you repay me?"

My father was a greedy businessman and millionaire who made very rash decisions that drove us to the point of financial despair these past months.

I don't know what he managed to promise the Lains but I fear it was a bad deal. Now I'm the one being sold off like collateral?

A few days ago, I would have been happy with marrying Ethan, but now I despise him.

Holding a wine glass and taking a sip, my mother shook her head. "Sweetie, you act like being cheated on is the worst thing in the world. For god's sake, it was just a silly fling between two young people. Stop overreacting."

I glared at her with pain in my eyes.

"Am I overreacting? How would you feel if–"

She walked up to me and grabbed my face roughly.

"Listen here you nitwit. I will not have you threatening my real daughter, you can never aspire to her potential. You should be grateful we kept you this long. If I find out you plan to harm my family. I will drag you through the streets. Understand? You pay up what you owe in form of the education, feeding, and clothes we've given you, or I take our family name from you and blacklist you everywhere so the only jobs you can get are a trash picker or gas station restroom attendant. Understood?"

My heart sank again.

"I understand."

"Good." She released me and picked up her sanitizer to apply it to her hands, muttering in disgust as she stormed out.

"You should be grateful to have my remnants sis, I could take everything you have with a snap of my finger, don't ever forget your fucking place."

Summer stuck out a tongue before running after mother.

Ethan finally spoke up.

"Listen.... Adelaide, I'm sorry it has come to this-"

"I would rather not hear it." I was numb and tired.

"But you have to understand...you were never enough, Adelaide. Summer... makes me feel alive But you heard your mother...it's just a fling, nothing serious. I still love and want to marry you."

"Oh she makes you feel alive. You want to marry me to prove you're as important to daddy. Guess what? He will never pay attention to you like Adrian because you will always be a loser, settling for second place..."

His face contorted into fury as he kicked me in the stomach.

"You should be lucky I want to marry you at all. Say something like that again and you'll end up worse."

He'd never done that before, he

stormed out the house, slamming the doors.

I coughed and fell to my knees, getting up shakily.

At this point, I'd become numb to their abuse.

I looked to my father who was still watching the whole scene unfold.

He sighed and got up, calm.

"Adelaide. I had better plans for you. A permanent seat reserved for you in Business, no one has your brains, but you're also expendable.

I would have preferred that Adrian boy from the Lains. You should have seduced him while you had the chance then we wouldn't have to settle for marrying you off to be connected in name at least to the Lain's family. But we have some failing business, you know it. They won't budge on this deal without collateral and that is what you are. You'll understand how this world works and why we did this once you stop resenting us.

The wedding is in two days. I suggest you get rid of whatever anger you hold and start settling down as a wife."

With that, he turned and left, leaving me alone.
