Emily stood at the edge of the river just before dawn, mist curling like whispers around her boots. Her pack was light-only essentials-and the sealed envelope tucked safely inside her cloak pressed heavily against her chest, like the weight of destiny itself.
She wasn't alone.
She felt it before she saw him-the presence. Quiet, controlled, and watchful. From the trees beyond the clearing, a figure emerged. He moved with the ease of someone who had nothing to prove, but everything to hide.
His cloak was dark and worn, his face partially shadowed beneath a deep hood. But his eyes-gray like polished steel-locked onto hers with unnerving precision.
"You're late," he said coolly.
Emily tensed. "Who are you?"
The man tilted his head slightly, as if amused she didn't know. "Name's Kael. I'm part of the chosen-same as you. Didn't expect to be babysitting a village girl, though."
Emily's mouth tightened. "I didn't ask for company. And I'm not the one hiding behind a hood."
Kael gave a faint smirk and lowered his hood. His features were sharper than she expected-elegant in a rugged way. A thin scar ran across one cheek, barely noticeable unless you looked closely.
"Better?" he said, one brow raised.
"Not really," she replied, turning away.
Their silence followed them as they crossed the river together, each step into the unknown forging a fragile bond neither wanted to acknowledge. Trees grew taller, darker here. The forest felt like it breathed around them-alive and waiting.
Hours passed with little conversation. Kael moved like a shadow, tracking paths only he could see, while Emily kept up without complaint. But she could feel his eyes on her, now and then-curious, assessing. Not unkind... just guarded.
By nightfall, they had set up camp under a thick canopy of leaves. Emily sat near the fire, rolling the wax-sealed envelope between her fingers.
"What's in it?" Kael asked, nodding toward the letter.
"No idea," she said truthfully. "Caldwell said it would guide me."
He stared into the flames. "Then maybe it's time you opened it."
She hesitated, then broke the seal. Inside was a single parchment. Symbols danced across it-strange, glowing softly as though alive. A map began to form, shifting until it settled into an image of a tower rising from a lake of silver light.
Kael leaned forward, eyes narrowing. "That place... it's real."
"You know it?"
He didn't answer immediately. "I've heard stories. Old magic. Dangerous trials. No one returns unchanged."
Emily looked at him. "Then why did you come?"
His gaze met hers-and for the first time, something in him flickered. Pain. Loss. A memory buried deep.
"Let's just say," he murmured, "I have debts to repay."
She didn't press. They were strangers, after all. But something told her Kael was more than just another Novice. Something told her he was watching her not to compete-but to protect.
And though she wouldn't admit it, a part of her was strangely... comforted.
As the fire dimmed and the forest grew still, Emily lay awake beneath the stars, the map beside her, and Kael's quiet breathing not far away. The journey had begun-and with it, something else had taken root.
Something unnamed.
Something dangerous.
Maybe even... something like love.
