Chapter 5 Clash between two worlds

The air shifted the moment Amy stepped onto the property.

Rose felt it even before she turned around a prickle at the back of her neck, as if the atmosphere itself had tensed. Footsteps echoed against the stone driveway, each click of high heels growing closer and more deliberate.

Rose turned her expression into a polite neutrality.

Amy was stunning, no doubt about it. Beautifully dressed in a cream designer coat that framed her slender figure, hair in perfect waves falling over her shoulders and a smile so pristine it belonged on a magazine cover. But there was something too polished about her, something artificial that made Rose's instincts quietly stir.

Amy's gaze swept over Rose, slow and measured, lingering just a second too long on her clothes, her shoes, the way her hair was pulled back into a simple braid. There was no mistaking the evaluation in her eyes.

"So," Amy began, her voice smooth as silk but cool underneath. "You're the new nanny?"

Rose straightened her shoulders. "Yes. Rose Brunette."

Hearing her surname, Amy's lips quirked upward. "Brunette? How... fitting."

Rose blinked. She couldn't tell if Amy was making a joke, an insult, or some kind of pointed observation. But before she could respond, a familiar voice broke through the tension.

"What are you doing here, Amy?"

Rose turned to see Christian standing on the front steps, his posture stiff, arms crossed over his chest. His expression was unreadable, but his tone left no room for pleasantries.

Amy's smile widened as if his coldness only entertained her. She walked toward him with slow, graceful steps, the sound of her heels clicking like a metronome counting down to something inevitable.

"Christian," she greeted, her tone warm and intimate. "It's been far too long."

His jaw tightened. "Not long enough."

Behind Rose, she felt Ella press closer to her side. Tiny fingers griped the fabric of her dress, hiding behind her like a shadow.

Without thinking, Rose shifted slightly, positioning herself as a barrier between the child and the woman who had just turned her calculating gaze on them.

Amy's attention drifted to Ella, her expression softening into something that might have passed as affection if Rose hadn't already caught the flicker of something sharper in her eyes.

"My, my Ella, darling. Look at you, You've grown so much."

Ella didn't move. She pressed her face into Rose's side, her grip tightening.

Amy tilted her head and gave a little sigh, as though mildly inconvenienced by the child's reaction. "Still shy, I see."

Rose felt an unexpected surge of protectiveness rising in her chest. Ella wasn't just shy. There was fear in the way she curled into her, a quiet plead for safety that Rose couldn't ignore.

Christian stepped down from the porch, his voice hardening. "Amy, what do you want?"

Amy gave a delicate shrug, as if his hostility were merely a small bump in her otherwise perfect day. "Just stopped by to say hello. I thought you'd be happy to see me."

"I'm not."

Amy laughed softly. "Oh, Christian. You used to love surprises."

Rose glanced up at him, curious despite herself. There was history here thick and tangled. And whatever had once existed between them, it was clear now that it had become into something cold and hard.

The silence stretched long enough to make the air feel heavy.

Amy, sensing the moment was slipping away, turned back toward her car. "Well, I suppose I'll be on my way. I'm in town for a while. I'm sure we'll see each other again."

Just before she left, her eyes locked on Rose once more, and her smile sharpened.

"It was lovely meeting you, Rose."

Rose managed a polite nod, but the words lodged like splinters.

As if she could believe that for a second.

The sound of Amy's car disappearing down the drive left a strange quiet in its wake.

Ella still clung to Rose, her small body pressed close, as if Amy's brief appearance had unsettled something deep inside her.

Christian rubbed the back of his neck, frustration evident in every line of his body. "If she ever bothers you, tell me immediately."

Rose looked over at him. "She seems... persistent."

He let out a low, humorless sound that wasn't quite a laugh. "Persistent doesn't begin to cover it."

Rose ran her hand soothingly over Ella's curls. "Why is Ella so afraid of her?"

Christian hesitated. For a moment, his gaze dropped to his daughter, who still hadn't lifted her face. His jaw clenched, and Rose saw something flicker in his eyes guilt, maybe or regret.

"Amy was never gentle with her," he finally said. "She didn't like being around kids. She said Ella was too clingy, too noisy like she was an inconvenience instead of a child."

Rose's stomach twisted. How could anyone treat their stepchild like that?

"She's safe with me," Rose whispered, her voice firmer than she expected.

Christian looked at her then, really looked at her. His gaze held hers for a bit too long, as if there was something he wanted to say but couldn't.

"I know," he said quietly.

The weight of those two words settled over her like a warm blanket, unexpected and reassuring.

They stood there for another minute, none of them eager to break the fragile calm that had finally settled.

But even as they went back inside, Rose couldn't shake the uneasy feeling in her chest.

Amy hadn't come back just to say hello.

And the way she'd looked at Rose...

That was the look of someone who had already decided who her enemy was.

And something told Rose this was only the beginning.
