Daniel recalled his previous dating experience. The WeChat nickname of his last date had been "Divorced with Two Kids." In fact, that girl had never even been in a relationship before. She wasn't very attractive, and after chatting for over a week, he realized her personality wasn't appealing either. Gradually losing interest, he didn't delve deeper into getting to know her, instead only sending her occasional casual messages to keep her as a backup option.
Alice, of course, had no idea what Daniel was thinking. She patiently said, "I'm not joking. I have two children, both five years old. I'm not planning on finding them a stepfather, so let's end this here."
Daniel paused for a moment, then quickly put on his most approachable, friendly smile. "Miss Hughes, don't rush to reject me. We've only just met, and we don't know each other well enough yet. After spending some time together, you might like me. To be honest, I like you a lot. The moment I saw you, I knew you were the one I've been looking for."
Alice's skin crawled even more.
"Let's order," Daniel opened the menu. "How about we eat and talk?"
He called the waiter over but didn't really look at the menu, just ordering the more expensive dishes.
Not hesitating to spend money to show his sincerity, Daniel ordered extravagantly. In his past experiences with blind dates, he had never ordered such pricey dishes.
Alice didn't want to stay for the meal and tried to stop him a few times, but Daniel kept interrupting her with various topics. He didn't think his behavior was rude; in fact, he even justified it, "I understand how women think. You don't like men asking if you want something, you'd rather us just buy it for you. There's a mall nearby, after dinner, we can go shopping. What do you like? Bags? Jewelry? Clothes? I'll buy them for you."
Most women would probably smile brightly and light up at this point, Daniel thought.
He looked at Alice, and she did indeed smile. He felt elated, thinking she was impressed by his wealth. But the next moment, Alice stopped smiling and said, "Daniel, I'm not playing hard to get or leading you on. If I say no, it means no."
She grabbed her bag, hooked it over her arm, and stood up. "I'm leaving. Enjoy your meal."
Seeing the situation take a turn, Daniel's face changed, and he immediately stood up, rushing to block her way. He reached for her hand, but she skillfully avoided it.
Alice's expression darkened. "Daniel, please respect yourself."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked, now visibly frustrated. He had genuinely fallen for Alice; she was so striking that if he missed this chance, he doubted he would ever meet a woman like her again. "Did I do something wrong? You can tell me."
Alice felt helpless.
It seemed like he didn't even realize his problem and still thought he was doing everything right.
Such a person couldn't be reasoned with in a few words. Alice just wanted to get out of the suffocating situation quickly. "No, it's my problem. I've made it clear from the beginning, I don't want to be in a relationship. Sorry to waste your time, but we're done here."
Both of them were standing, making a scene that drew the attention of those nearby. Alice felt embarrassed, but Daniel still stubbornly blocked her way. She had already made herself clear, yet he wasn't giving up, trying to hold her back.
Alice had dealt with difficult clients at work, but she had never encountered someone who couldn't even understand basic manners.
Ronan didn't expect to run into Alice here. It seemed like she was having an argument with a man, though he couldn't hear what they were saying, he could tell from her expression that she was furious.
If that man wasn't careful, given Alice's fiery temper, she might end up throwing a punch.
"Is that..."
The woman dining with Ronan, upon seeing Alice's striking face, muttered in shock. Her hand tightened on her skirt beneath the table, her eyes widened in disbelief.
How could this be?
Why was Alice here?
Elizabeth's face turned pale, and her breath became shallow. She glanced nervously at the man across from her, watching Alice with a calm expression. It was as if he didn't even recognize her.
Back when Alice had chased after Ronan, it had caused quite a stir. The whole school knew about it, and even students from nearby universities would show up just to watch.
Then they broke up because Alice had cheated.
Elizabeth had been there at the scene and could never forget that shocking moment.
Now, seeing Ronan so calm as he faced Alice again... wasn't he supposed to be more agitated?
Did he already know Alice had returned?
Or had he really forgotten her completely, treating her as a stranger?
Elizabeth couldn't figure him out, but the uneasy feeling in her chest wouldn't subside.
Nearby, Alice, still trying to escape Daniel's grip, displayed her phone's lock screen- a selfie of her and her two kids. "I don't know what the matchmaker told you, but I really do have two kids. I wasn't lying. I thought a man like you wouldn't accept this."
Her last sentence was laced with sarcasm, especially after Daniel had bragged about himself so much when he first introduced himself.
Daniel looked at the photo. The little girl in the picture resembled Alice a little, while the boy didn't look much like her. Both kids were nestled in her arms. Daniel twitched his lips. "You weren't joking?"
Alice closed her eyes and, with an indifferent expression, said, "I've repeated that I'm not joking. It's you who kept interrupting me and misinterpreting my words." She put her phone away and looked at the road, still blocked by him. "Can I leave now?"
"No, how could this happen..." Daniel looked devastated, filled with disbelief and a little anger. His expression was twisted with frustration. "This is fraud!"
"How is this fraud?" Alice snapped, furious. "I had no idea about this blind date when I arrived. I've explained it to you, but you kept talking over me and now you're blaming me."
"Anyway, you can't leave!" Daniel's face turned red with frustration as he grabbed her wrist to stop her from leaving.
He had ordered all those expensive dishes and a bottle of wine, totaling over two thousand yuan, which he couldn't cancel. He couldn't just let this be a loss. He had to get something back.
"You're divorced with two kids, there's no way I'll marry someone like you. But..." He lowered his voice to a whisper, just loud enough for them to hear, "You're so beautiful, why don't you spend one night with me, and I'll forget all about today?"
The money he'd spent would be worth it for a night with such a stunning woman.
Alice grabbed her unfinished lemon water from the table and, without hesitation, splashed it in his face. "Get lost!"
Daniel didn't expect her to act this way. He stood frozen for a moment, his face soaked in water. The wet strands of his hair dripped down, and his shirt was soaked as well.
But it wasn't his wet clothes that bothered him the most-what really stung was the way his dignity had been trampled on.
This was like a slap in the face, and he couldn't take it.
He wiped his face, his eyes blazing with fury. He raised his hand to slap Alice, but before he could bring it down, someone intercepted his arm.
Before he could even see who had intervened, his face was slammed onto the cold surface of the table with a loud "thud," sending a shock through his head.
